Sewing Tutorial-Triangle Fold Coaster

Thanks for the great response on the Granny’s Style Rag Rug I posted few days ago. Due to your many request to come up with a tutorial, I woke up at 4am this morning for you, my dear readers, took step-by-step photos to show you how to fold and sew those tiny triangles 
Since I have limited fabric scraps to make a big piece of rag rug, I made a small one instead – a coaster. It’s a rushed job and not like my previous tutorials which would take up a few days to complete. I hope you will think that the quality is good….. It is now late in the afternoon while I write this post, and I need some super-duper-booster-coffee to keep my eyes 
. Though I am tired and left my craft room in a mess because I need to rush out to work this morning, but, I am happy and contented with what I have done as long as it is related to creative handicraft and handmade, and most importantly I have you to read my creations 
So, throw some requests if you need one, I will put them in the “Things-To-Do List” and will plan for it
Materials and Tools
Back to the tutorial. You will need the following materials and tools to make the coaster:
1. Plenty of fabrics, it can be new fabric or fabric scraps you have collected
2. A pair of scissors
3. Iron
4. Some pins
5. Matching threads
6. Sewing machine
Cut the fabric to 2″ x 2.5″ size. If you want a bigger triangle, you can enlarge the dimension. Just like many creative handmades, there is no fixed dimension for the pattern, it all depends on you creation and how you want your design to be.
Fold it diagonally and iron it. In order to set the fabric into its triangle shape, I adjusted the heat of the iron to “High”. I ended up having some burn marks on the ironing board after I finished ironing all the triangles… need to get a new iron-board cover LOL…
Fold this way, iron again.
Lastly, fold again, and iron a little longer to set the shape.
This is another side of the triangle. Continue doing it until you finish a substantial amount of triangles enough to complete your entire project.
There you are, a pile of triangles ready for the coaster after an hour of hard work
For the coaster, we need to prepare a base (blue round shape) for sewing the triangles on. It can be round shape, or rectangle, or square, or just any shape you want as long you know how to arrange your triangle onto it.
Arrange the triangle onto the base with 1/3 overlapping on the next triangle. Adjust the position until the spacing and shape look balance. Secure it with some pins.
Machine sew it. It will be a little thick to go through the foot press. Press the paddle lightly, sew slowly following the curvature of the coaster base.
Repeat the triangle arrangement and machine sew for each layer.
This is the final layer of my coaster. After sewing it, I added a center piece to cover up all the messy frays of the triangles. Zig-zag sew the center piece and it is done

I want to make the rug, but in sections so I can use magnets to hook them together; creating a larger area of a kitchen rug that can be easily pulled apart for washing.

I was running through the net last night/early this morning which ever 2am sits at trying to find this pattern: http://www.straw.com/equilters/library/projectshare/coasterspatt.html when I came across yours. I had to save it to my favorites so I can make these for next Christmas I give away coasters to friends doesn’t cost much and they seem to enjoy it. My friend at work loved the ones this year she wanted the pattern (which sent me on the voyage into the net to find the other pattern. So I ended up sending her this one also. It’s great having another quilting buddy even if you end up giving the same thing to each other they are gonna be different! Thanks for your pattern. I’m sure we both will enjoy making them as gifts to our friends and family’s.
