Crochet: Koala Bear Amigurumi {Tutorial & Pattern}

I found a Koala Bear Amigurumi Pattern in the Woman’s Day website and I have some off-white and gray organic cotton yarns on hand, so I made a pair of these small little stuffed koala bears for my kids in reverse color.

Some ideas to make it differently:
1. This adorable little koala is about 3-5″ tall only (depend on your yarn and the matching hook size), install a key ring on it’s head and turn it into a key chain, hang it to the bag’s zipper.
2. If we sew the limbs closer to the center of the body and insert 4 small strong magnets to the tip of each limb, you can make it “huggy” and hug on a tree branch or at the edge of your curtain or your pencil, ruler etc…
3. And, and…. instead of poly-fills, stuff beads into the body to weight it down and with the magnets of it limbs, it can be a cute memo holder on your desk too :)
4. Use a chunkier yarn and bigger hook, crochet a giant version to become a soft toy.

Lets get the how-to for the basic koala bear amigurumi:

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearFollow the crochet pattern at the above pattern link to crochet all the parts of the koala bear, which consist of:
1 head (stuff firmly and complete)
1 body
1 nose
2 ears
4 limbs
Remember to leave a long yarn end (about 6-8″) for every part so that you will have enough yarn to sew.
You need 2 black beads (I used about 5.5mm or 7/32″ to match the size of the head I crocheted).
Tapestry needle and scissor.

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearFind the appropriate positions for the ears, approx at the center of the vertical cross section of the head, middle of the height.

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearSew to attach the nose in the center between the 2 ears.
Sew eyes 2 stitches away from the nose.
Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearStuff the body firmly and sew it to the bottom of the head.

      What a great idea! Why didn’t I thought of it!!! I think it is pretty easy to modify, just have to change the color to blue and pink, modify the ears and add some stitches on the palms… wow.. I can imagine how cute it will turn out!!! Have to go to my craft room to see if I have any pink and blue yarn in my stash.

    Thanks you for this Gorgeous koala! I would like to respectfully advise that it is not a bear; therefore the correct appelation is simply koala! Yours in crochet. (

      Thanks for the info, JacqBrisbane! It is commonly known as koala bear here, I don’t know why… so, I did a google search and found the explanation in Wikipedia:
      “Although the koala is not a bear, English-speaking settlers from the late 18th century first called it koala bear due to its similarity in appearance to bears. Although taxonomically incorrect, the name koala bear is still in use today outside Australia — its use is discouraged because of the inaccuracy in the name. Other descriptive English names based on “bear” have included monkey bear, native bear, and tree-bear.”

    HI! Since it’s 2011, the Year of Rabbit ( my year ^^) you could do a rabbit and post it on this website! I went to popular that day ang bought a book on crotcher–it also teach pp how to crotchet a rabbit. Chinese New Year is here– can you come to my house??     A Koala is not a bear! It is a marsupial. Their name has never been “Koala Bear”. That is simply an erroneous term that is often used these days. I guess I feel so strongly about it because as an Australian child born in 1990, I grew up listening to great things such as The Wiggles and Don Spencer and I specifically remember Don Spencer’s song about Koalas not being bears! “Please don’t call me a Koala bear, cause I’m not a bear at all. Please don’t call me a koala bear, it’s driving me up the wall!” That being said, I think I might just make one of these cuties!

    I love this sweetie and would like to make my own one, but the problem is, that I can`t reach the website with the pattern :( … Tryed everything, but the pattern just don`t want to open. Could you sometime copy and post the pattern here, please, please?? I would be very grateful for that.

      I can open it without problem, it could be your computer setting that prohibit it to open.
      I can’t copy the pattern and paste it here, it is not fair to the site I found the pattern. But, I can always help you to print the pattern in pdf and send to you via email.
