I found a Koala Bear Amigurumi Pattern in the Woman’s Day website and I have some off-white and gray organic cotton yarns on hand, so I made a pair of these small little stuffed koala bears for my kids in reverse color.

Some ideas to make it differently:
1. This adorable little koala is about 3-5″ tall only (depend on your yarn and the matching hook size), install a key ring on it’s head and turn it into a key chain, hang it to the bag’s zipper.
2. If we sew the limbs closer to the center of the body and insert 4 small strong magnets to the tip of each limb, you can make it “huggy” and hug on a tree branch or at the edge of your curtain or your pencil, ruler etc…
3. And, and…. instead of poly-fills, stuff beads into the body to weight it down and with the magnets of it limbs, it can be a cute memo holder on your desk too :)
4. Use a chunkier yarn and bigger hook, crochet a giant version to become a soft toy.

Lets get the how-to for the basic koala bear amigurumi:

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearFollow the crochet pattern at the above pattern link to crochet all the parts of the koala bear, which consist of:
1 head (stuff firmly and complete)
1 body
1 nose
2 ears
4 limbs
Remember to leave a long yarn end (about 6-8″) for every part so that you will have enough yarn to sew.
You need 2 black beads (I used about 5.5mm or 7/32″ to match the size of the head I crocheted).
Tapestry needle and scissor.

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearFind the appropriate positions for the ears, approx at the center of the vertical cross section of the head, middle of the height.

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearSew to attach the nose in the center between the 2 ears.
Sew eyes 2 stitches away from the nose.

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearStuff the body firmly and sew it to the bottom of the head.

Crochet Pattern for Amigurumi Koala BearLastly, stuff and sew the limbs to the body. ~~Done~~

  7. Aww so cute! Reminds me of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch! Love this little koala.

    • What a great idea! Why didn’t I thought of it!!! I think it is pretty easy to modify, just have to change the color to blue and pink, modify the ears and add some stitches on the palms… wow.. I can imagine how cute it will turn out!!! Have to go to my craft room to see if I have any pink and blue yarn in my stash.

  8. Thanks you for this Gorgeous koala! I would like to respectfully advise that it is not a bear; therefore the correct appelation is simply koala! Yours in crochet. (
s A Queenslander who lives near the Koala Sanctuary, to be found here (if it’s ok to post a link?)

    :)

    • Thanks for the info, JacqBrisbane! It is commonly known as koala bear here, I don’t know why… so, I did a google search and found the explanation in Wikipedia:
“Although the koala is not a bear, English-speaking settlers from the late 18th century first called it koala bear due to its similarity in appearance to bears. Although taxonomically incorrect, the name koala bear is still in use today outside Australia — its use is discouraged because of the inaccuracy in the name. Other descriptive English names based on “bear” have included monkey bear, native bear, and tree-bear.”

  12. hi please cud i buy it off u

  13. ok .can i just say i think you are amazing xx

  14. A Koala is not a bear! It is a marsupial. Their name has never been “Koala Bear”. That is simply an erroneous term that is often used these days. I guess I feel so strongly about it because as an Australian child born in 1990, I grew up listening to great things such as The Wiggles and Don Spencer and I specifically remember Don Spencer’s song about Koalas not being bears! “Please don’t call me a Koala bear, cause I’m not a bear at all. Please don’t call me a koala bear, it’s driving me up the wall!” That being said, I think I might just make one of these cuties!

  15. I love this sweetie and would like to make my own one, but the problem is, that I can`t reach the website with the pattern :( … Tryed everything, but the pattern just don`t want to open. Could you sometime copy and post the pattern here, please, please?? I would be very grateful for that.

    • I can open it without problem, it could be your computer setting that prohibit it to open.
I can’t copy the pattern and paste it here, it is not fair to the site I found the pattern. But, I can always help you to print the pattern in pdf and send to you via email.
      Let me know.

  18. I clicked on the link and it takes me to the page but the person who posted the pattern has set it to private now… Any idea where I could find another Koala

  19. Why can I not get to the pattern part of the Koala bear?

  20. Hi, can you please help with the access to that site?

  21. The koala is NOT A BEAR. It is a marsupial.

  22. In the pattern, it says mm at the end of every row.. what does that mean? I know it means millimeters but it doesn’t seem to make sense in the context it’s used. :P

    Thanks! Adorable project.

  23. I decided to give this a try and have had great success with every part except for the nose. The instructions for the nose lack the clarity of the instructions for the other parts of the koala, and as a beginner, this has stopped me in my tracks with a noseles marsupial! :)

Here is where I am confused:
    - It say to chain three and then single crochet twice, but it doesn’t specify where those two single crochet stitches go. Do they both go in the second loop from the hook? One on the second and one on the third? Somewhere else?
    - Then it says to chain one and turn (ok. I can handle that).
    - But then it says to do two single crochets, but again it doesn’t say where. Which stitch(es) do I put those two single crochets in?

I think from that point on I would be ok. I have tried several different variations, but the nose just never seems to look right. Please help clarify the directions for the nose if you have the time. I would be very thankful as this help would allow me to finish my first amigurumi.

    Thank you!

    • I just took a refresh on the pattern, basically, it is to come up with a triangle shape.
      Here is the explanation:
ch3, sc on the second ch from hook, sc on next ch. ch1, turn
sc on the second ch from hook, sc on next ch. ch1, turn
      sc2tog, fo

So, in summary, it is a 2 rows of 2 sc on each row then tip it up with a sc2tog at the 3rd row.

      Hope this help. :)
      Happy amigurumi!!!

  30. FYI – if you’re having trouble with the link – try to use a regular browser from a desktop/laptop. Neither my iPad nor my iPhone are able to view the pattern link at Women’s Day, but I was able to from Safari on my laptop. This little dude is so adorable and since our new elementary school has a Koala mascot I’m hoping to make these for the year end gifts for the teachers. Maybe if I start this weekend.. they may get done in time! (nearly a year to go!). Thanks for sharing the tips!

  34. Hello :-) ,

I have been searching for a cute Koala to give to my sister as a gift. She used to have one when we were kids and she would play with me and the koala. It is one of those special memories one could have with a sibling, in my case an older sibling. Well, I couldn’t find a cute one that caught my attention and then I thougt, what if I make it crochet? That would truly be special!. I’ve been trying to start crocheting. I searched online and was so excited to find ur page with such and adorable little koala. However I too have problems with accessing the pattern. The page no longer shows it. Is there a way u can help me out? I would greatly appreciate it!!!! Thank u!!

    • The pattern is still in the Woman’s Day website ( I just visited before replying to you), it does take some times to load, so please wait until the document gets loaded, save and print it out. Happy crochet and I am sure your sister will sure love this little creature :)
