As promised in my previous sock bunny sewing tutorial, here comes the kawai-i version – the “Droopy Ear Sock Bunny”. This bunny can sits on its own, it is great as toy for kid and as well as for home decoration. Hope you like it and made some for your loved ones.

Again, it is a single sock sewing, perfect if you have some don’t-know-what-to-do stray socks laying around that are still “new”. Or, you can make twins bunny with a new pair of socks.

Since there have been quite some sock tutorials here, including the sock monkey, sock kitty and sock skeleton, I will have this tutorial a little simplified on the step photos. If you want to view more photos on the detail, perhaps a visit to the previous sock bunny tutorial will be a good start for a beginner or if you haven’t been there before.

Happy Sewing!

After a great success on making a bunch of sock monkeys, I challenged myself sewing another sock toy… this time I designed and sewed sock bunny. Not only this, I have got a good news to whom who loves bunny, I have another version, a kawai-i version of bunny, <del>stay tuned for the update</del> {update: here it is, the droopy ear sock bunny tutorial}.

Unlike many sock toys that needs a pair of socks to sew, each sock bunny only needs one (1) sock to make. With a pair of socks you can make a pair of bunny couples. If you have a rather new sock that lost it’s partner, you can make a bunny with it instead of throwing it away. You may use different sizes of socks to come out with various sizes of sock bunnies.

The sock bunny can’t sit on its own, I pinned them down for photography purpose. You may add beads or rice to make the bottom heavier so that it can sit properly. Add the rice or beads in a small sachet and insert it into the body before closing up the opening to avoid the small particles from slipping out from the sock. Otherwise, you may add a string on it’s head to hang it up. Pinch the head and lift it up to find a balancing point to add string to hang.

[If you are interested on the felted carrot shown at the background, here is the tutorial to make it.]

Gosh… I am supposed to sew some thing for the Earth Month this April, but I can’t wait to sew these sock monkeys. My hands simply took over my head and see what I did after a few days and nights of sewing…. a house full of sock monkeys!!!! Do you love them?

I have seen a lot of sock monkey photos hanging around friends’ photo albums in many photo sharing websites, so envy. These sock monkeys are so cute and so adorable that I would want to hug one, I bet my kids would love to have them to accompany too when mommy is busy with works. Therefore, I went out to shop for some socks thinking that may be 4 to 5 pairs should be enough, I ended up with 20 pairs of colorful socks, simply can’t resist for not buying . I made a few prototypes and showed them to my parents, siblings and their families during a dinner. Now, everyone wants one from me…. ha ha ha… Seeing their positive responses, I am certain that you will want one too …. After a few researches and findings, here is my version of sock monkey. Though it may looks a bit different from the popular vintage sock monkey of Red-Heel that comes with a red lip but it is surely as lovely.

With different sizes of socks, I made the sock monkey out of a family, from baby, toddlers, teens to adult. 3rd picture in the above album shows the family photo of the sock monkey, from daddy, mommy, sister, brother, triplet toddlers, and a baby. Not forgetting a brown sock monkey, the photographer who took this family photo that can do yoga. The sister (in purple stripes) who has magnets on her limbs are good in exercise and can be hung on any metal surface. Click next on the above photo album to see them all.

The siblings are indeed loving each other, not only they are huggy to human, but they also hug each other, like this one.

Every March is National Craft Month, be extra crafty for the rest of the days until end of the month to celebrate the month specially meant for us. I am hoping to share more different crafts so you will have more choice to select. I am working all the best I could, juggling the time between a day business that has nothing to do with craft and 2 kids running around at home, also a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland.

As you may have noticed, I love to sew toys for my kids. Seeing them hugging the toys lovingly is all I want as a return of my late night crafting. This time is a set of 4 elephant family members, I called them “The Happy Elephant Family”, which resemble the size of my family, Dad-Mom-Daughter-Son. Looking at the wild life photo of the elephant colony inspired me to come out with this pattern. I was brought up in the accustomed way like many of you, Father is always the leader and Mother is always the care provider. I hope my kids will follow us until they are big enough to set up their own family and this is how the family branches out.

Today is also my dad’s 70th birthday. My dad is a traditional Chinese man, he is the man who spends his whole life working so hard to bring 4 of us up in the best way he can afford to do. The man who spends all his hard earn money building a good family foundation, but also the one who forgotten to plan for himself, his retirement and his medical bill. The man still working all his best for us including repairing our house plumbing, electrical appliances, build us furniture & fish pond, plant & harvest our favorite fruits. Happy Birthday Daddy! You are always our hero and we will always love you.

If you are the fans of the British’s animated children’s television series, “Shaun The Sheep”, and the spinoff “Timmy Time”, this cute little baby sheep shouldn’t be any stranger to you. His name is Timmy, the cousin of Shaun, the pacifier sucker that has a mom who wears hair curlers that always protect him from danger.

After making Pom-pom Shaun The Sheep and Shirley Sheep Earmuffs, I knew that Timmy will be my next sheep project. Here he is, presented in the form of amigurumi and I hope you all like it.

We have been a huge fans of Shaun the Sheep ever after my son was born. This animated TV program was our routine morning show during breakfast. I love this cute little pacifier sucker baby sheep and adore it a lot. Few years later, Aardman Animations produced a spinoff to feature Timmy in Timmy Time. This 3 year-old baby sheep and his friends learn to share and make friends which is a good Children TV series for preschooler.

Get the amigurumi pattern and the how-to sew this baby sheep with pacifier after this jump:

Remember Jenny And Teddy Etsy shop that I mentioned in my How-To Amigurumi tutorial? Jane, the girl behind the shop who sells amigurumi patterns and the finished dolls is here to teach us how to amigurumi a little cutie baby chicky. I heart it when Jane showed me the photo and can’t wait to share this easy pattern that she specially designed for Craft Passion with you. She used light weight acrylic yarn with a matching 1.25mm hook size to make this 3- 3 1/2″ little baby chick. You can always substitute with other yarn and a matching hook size (read here on how to choose a correct hook size for amigurumi).

Crochet Pattern by jennyandteddy.
(You are allowed to sell the finished dolls that are made out of my original pattern because I love crafters who made this doll with love and care.)

Finish Size
Approximately 3 – 3 1/2″
Size varies depending on the size of yarn and crochet hook

Materials
To make you will need
1. Acrylic yarn, for this pattern, I normally used 8 ply
2. Plastic eyes with safety backing 7.5mm (you can find it at any craft shop)
3. Polyester fiber fill for stuffing
4. Sewing needle and embroidery
5. Ribbon or button
7. Crochet hook size 1.25mm or the size that match your choice of yarn
8. Craft glue

Note
The size of the crochet hook really does not matter. The doll design will work just fine with different sizes of yarn with a matching hook, it will only affect the finished doll size.
In this pattern, you will be working in continuous round, you may use a short length of contrasting color yarn to mark the beginning of each round. When you finish a round, do not join at the end of each round, instead continue single crochet the next stitch to begin a new round and work spirally upward.
In the pattern, I have given the number of stitches you should have at the end of each round. If you are off by 1 or 2 stitches, do not worry about it.

Skill and abbreviations
You will need to know how to make a magic ring or adjustable ring
-Single crochet (sc)
-Crochet increase (inc) means: make 2 single crochet in same stitch
-Crochet decrease (dec) means: Crochet 2 stitches together
-Stitch (st)
-Chain (ch)
-Slip stitch (slst)
-Round (Rnd)
-* : Repeat stitches from * to end of *

I am honored to have Stacey from Fresh Stitches to be today’s guest tutor. She is going to show us how to substitute yarns in Amigurumi and also how to choose the correct hook for the yarn. I have touched a little about this topic in my recent amigurumi post of How To Amigurumi and today, Stacey will bring you to a detail tutorial about the yarn, hook and how to use them for changing the size of your amigurumi without modifying the pattern.

Stacey is the author of the popular Cuddly Crochet: Adorable Toys, Hats, & More I recommended in “How To Amigurumi”.
Step-by-Step Guide to Substituting Yarns in Amigurumi

You probably already know that amigurumi are adorable and fun to make… but you might not have known that you can substitute any yarn into any pattern that you’d like! In this post, I’m going to show you how to successfully substitute yarns and you’ll only be limited by your imagination!

Let’s start with the basics. If you use a smaller yarn than is recommended, you’ll need to use a smaller hook, and you’ll end up with a smaller amigurumi. Check out the two monsters above: the monster on the right was crocheted with the (recommended) worsted weight yarn and the monster on the left was crocheted with a smaller yarn and hook. Look how much smaller the one on the left is… isn’t he adorable?

Let’s get down to the details- how do you know what sized hook to use? Amigurumi patterns typically recommend that you use a hook smaller than is recommended for the yarn, so to substitute successfully, you’ll want to use a hook that’s the same amount smaller than is recommended for your yarn. Let’s look at an example.

Let’s pretend we’re looking at a pattern that recommends using a worsted weight yarn with a size F (3.75mm) hook. A worsted weight yarn usually uses a size H (5.0mm) hook. How do I know that? I peeked at the size hook recommended on the yarn label of a worsted weight yarn!

That means that the pattern recommends that you use a hook that is 1.25mm smaller than what is recommended on the yarn label.

So, now I have a smaller yarn that I want to make an amigurumi from. The yarn label for my smaller yarn recommends a 3.5mm hook.

To calculate what size hook we need, just subtract 1.25 from 3.5… and we find out that we’ll want to use a 2.25mm, which is a size B. So, grab your B hook and start crocheting! Easy!

Does it work the same way for bigger yarns? Of course! Let’s say we have a bulky yarn.

The bulky yarn label says that we want to use a size 10, which is a 6mm. 6 minus 1.25 is 4.75! Since there isn’t a 4.75 mm crochet hook, we’d probably round up to a 5mm (size H) and get started!

A couple of other points to keep in mind:
• If you’re using a bigger yarn, you’re going to also use slightly more yardage than is called for in the pattern. Smaller yarns will use less yardage.
• Scale your eyes accordingly! In the monsters above, the big monster uses 12mm eyes, but I used 9mm eyes for the smaller monster.
• Are you confused about what size in millimeters your crochet hook is? You might want to check out a conversion chart. This is especially helpful if you’re reading a pattern that’s from a different country than you.

And remember, amigurumi are about having fun… so don’t worry too much about the exact hook size! If the little animal you’re making looks good in the yarn that you chose, then go with it!

I heard friends and readers asking me how to do amigurumi, including patterns, materials, tools & tips etc…. you will find all the answers in this post: How-To Amigurumi!!!

Frankly speaking, just like all other crafts, to make a decent looking amigurumi is not easy but it is not hard as you thought too. You need skill, skill comes from knowledge and practice…. and to success in crafting, you need patience and the “never-give-up” attitude – do it again and again until you are satisfied with the result.

Amigurumi (編みぐるみ?, lit. crocheted or knitted stuffed toy) is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll. Amigurumi are typically animals, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features.

Get the complete guide on how-to Amigurumi after this jump.

I spent months to master the skill of these cutie doggie amigurumies, no joke! My friend showed me this French Bulldog and asked if I can make a couple for her and her another friend. I totally in love with it at first sight so I went straight to the book store and get the Japanese version of Ami Ami Dogs. Can’t help myself and bought another one of the same series from the author. The first few I made didn’t come out exactly like the one shown in the book, rather, they are looking at different view and the head is tilted down. The yarn I bought didn’t look right too for the color, the white is not white enough to bring out the contrast of this doggies. So, I crochet them again after getting the right color that I want. Since then, I couldn’t stop by just crochet 1 pattern. I made another few breeds when I can find the right yarn color off hand. Click the Next button to view them all.

Read chart or written pattern carefully and make sure you understand all the instructions.
Prepare all the tools and materials needed to make the amigurumi and get started.
Crochet abbreviation – written [chart] pattern
sc [X] - single crochet
sc inc [V] – single crochet increase
sc dec (sc2tog) [Λ] - single crochet decrease (invisible crochet is a better choice to prevent hole forming, photo tutorial, video)
ch [Ο] – chain
slst [ • ] – slip stitch

Choice Of Yarn & Hook Size
Read the pattern instruction and look out for recommended yarn weight and crochet hook size. If you would like to make it in different size, you can try out with different yarn weight and hook size.
Yarn weight: These 2 dogs are made from the same pattern but different yarn weight, which turned out in different size. The smaller dog is from baby yarn and the bigger dog is from medium worsted yarn.
You can use synthetic fiber yarn which is cheaper and has better color choice.
Hook size: A size smaller from the recommended hook size works perfectly for amigurumi. For example, if the recommended hook size stated on the yarn label said size 3mm, use 2.5mm instead.

Other Tools
Besides crochet hook, you will need the followings:
1. Tapestry Needles, I used #13 for chunky yarn, #18 for medium weight yarn, #20 for baby yarn & #24 for lace thread. You might need a long needle for big amigurumi.
2. Scissors
3. Markers, or you can use bobby pin to mark the first st of the row
4. Tweezers (blunt tip) or stuffing tool (see video how to use this stuffing tool)
5. All purpose adhesive (transparent) for gluing eyes and nose, great for threading yarn through the narrow eye of the tapestry needle.

Stuffing & Weight
Stuffing: There is always a question of how much to stuff for the amigurumi, I stuffed mine until the amigurumi is firm and resemble the tubular shape of the amigurumi..
Weight: If you need to add weight so that the amigurumi stands better, you can use silica gel (in bead form), plastic beads for smaller ami. A stainless steel bolt is good for a bigger ami.
Eyes & Nose
Other names for amigurumi eyes are craft eyes, animal eyes or safety eyes. Basically, the are 2 types of attachment, stud type or sewn type. The photos shown are stud type, some came with back locking plates and for those don’t have, the eye has to be glued with all-purpose adhesive (not recommended if it is for kids under 3).
Normally, eyes come in either whole black or clear plastic with black spot at the center. Select the suitable eyes and nose for your amigurumi.
I bought some of my parts and tools via this online shop .
You can also use beads, buttons and felts to make eyes and nose for amigurumi too.
Eye Color Customization
It is not necessary to buy ready color eye for amigurumi, you can always add you own color on a clear eye.
For white, use correction pen (fluid type) and paint the back of the clear eye.
For other color, use acrylic paint and paint the back of the clear eye.
I painted mine in green, brown, blue and white. You can even add design if you have a bigger clear eye, like adding iris stripes, circles, love shape etc. to further enhance the effect of your amigurumi’s character.
Tension
Unlike normal crochet, in amigurumi your stitch tension have to be snugly tight to prevent “holes” forming, the holes will amplify after stuffing.

Change Yarn Color
In some patterns, you might need to change yarn color like those I did for the dogs, click here to get the tutorial on how to do it, or here for video.
Joining Parts
Now you have all the parts (heads, arms, legs, torsos) of the amigurumi ready, installed eyes and nose, stuffed to it’s fullest firmness. It is time to join them up by sewing.
Click here to see how to join, or here for a video.
Some patterns will show where to join, for those don’t, look closely at the photo of your pattern to find the correct place to join. Sometimes you might have to unpick the stitches and redo the joining if you find the position is a little off, especially the first attempt. Don’t give-up, you are about to cross the finish line!

Other Tips
Needle threading
If you have difficulty in getting the yarn through the eye of the tapestry needle, put a small drop of adhesive (for example, UHU or quick-dry all-purpose adhesive but not super glue, please) at the yarn end, twist and make it pointy. Let it dry before inserting through the eye of the tapestry needle.
Tidying up the messy yarn ends
After stitching, make a small knot with an adjacent stitch. Insert the needle back to the body and come out from the opposite (the further the better). Pull the yarn a little before clipping so that both the knot and yarn end can hide inside the body.

Practice, Practice & Practice!!!
Practice is the best way to achieve a perfect amigurumi. I did more than 10 in total of these cute doggies to achieve a close to perfect result. Each of them still looks a little different even though they are from the same pattern.
Want to see them?
According to Lunar Calendar and Chinese astrology, the world has entered into Rabbit year starting from this spring （立春）, that’s today, February 4th, 2011. As a memento of the year, I made some bunny sachets. I filled them with silica gel (in bead form) and turn them into desiccant bags for my metal notions stored in the glass bottles. The silica bead will help in controlling the humidity in the glass bottle, hence to protect the metal from oxidation and degradation.

This project is ideal if you have a lot of fabric scraps that you want to de-stash. It is quick and easy to sew, I am able to complete a dozen of them within hours including taking photos for all the steps.

This bunny sachet pattern is not confined only as a desiccant bag, you can fill it with other ingredients and turn it into personal amenity, for example:
1. Scented sachet if filled with Potpourri (great gift for this coming Valentines)
2. Sleep pillow if filled with dried chamomile & lavender flowers in a bigger bunny poly-fill (perfect as baby shower gift)
3. Heat bag if filled with rice or wheat and herbs which to be heated up in mirco-wave oven (for medical purpose)
4. Shoes freshener if filled with activated carbon or charcoal (as shown below, best use in summer)

Get the pattern and step-by-step instructions with photos after this jump:
2. Sachet filling ingredient – silica bead, activated charcoal, or scented potpourri etc.
3. Ribbon, lace, yarn or cord
4. Fusible web (for large bunny)
