I made another pom-pom scarf again, this time it is a little different from the green pom-pom scarf I have made 2 years ago. Time flies so fast and it was like yesterday that I have got the first pom-pom scarf done. You may find that both tutorials slightly different since I have to create a pattern that suits the yarn I used and the person who is going to wear the scarf.

This pink pom-pom scarf is quick to knit by using the Sirdar’s baby snowball yarn I bought recently. It can be done in an hour or within 2 hours. The straight yarn between the pom-pom is shorter than the previous yarn, so this time I am going to make only 1 stitch in between pom-pom (instead of 2 for the previous pattern). This scarf is intended for my daughter, so I made it to have 2 bigger pom-pom dangling at both of it’s V-shaped ends.

In this knitting pattern, I added 2 types of knitting stitches (as shown below). If they are new to you, don’t worry, the video tutorial shown in detail how to make these 2 stitches too.

Kbf – Knit in front and back of stitch. This is an increment stitch where after you knit the 1st stitch, make another stitch at the back loop before take out from the left needle.

Ktbl – Knit through back loop. This is to make a normal knit stitch “twisted”.

The video has caption on it with a relaxing background music. You can leave the speaker off if you prefer to watch the video quietly. Sit back and enjoy this 12 minutes knitting tutorial video to make a pom-pom scarf, including how to join the yarn in between. Try one for this cold winter.

There is a written pattern below, just in case you want to print it out to keep.

Halloween is just a week away…. I am counting down and rounding up the Halloween crafts then I can go “Boo”ing around and have fun.

But, before I am allowed to go, I took one of the ghosts from the ghost lights and toss it in a glass jar. He has been naughty lately and not following the rules. This time he ain’t going with me, I hope he learned a good lesson and behave well when I am back.

Along with the ghost lights decoration, I found a bunch of mini mandarin oranges holiday lights in my store room which I have been decorating for my Chinese New year since years. Now, they become part of my Halloween light decorations. All I have to do is to draw the oranges with permanent marker, easy and quick!!!

Here is the round-up of Halloween crafts of 2009-2011:

This is rather a fast and easy tutorial to make mini pom-pom with your own 2 fingers, some yarns and a pair of scissors.

It started when I need some mini pom-poms urgently for a crochet craft and I was lazy to drive tenths of miles just to get to a shop that sells them. Just in case you are like me and have some stash yarns at home, you can easy make your own mini pom-pom with just 2 of your fingers. If you use the same yarn to make the mini pom-pom, it matches perfectly to your project.

Material & tool:
1. Stash yarn
2. Scissors

Wrap a significant amount of yarn onto your 2 fingers. The more yarn you wrap, the fuller the pom-pom will be. But, be moderate and don’t go beyond what your 2 upper part fingers can take.

Tie the yarns in between your 2 fingers. Tie it strongly and securely. If you need someone to help, please ask, but I can do it just with my other hand and my teeth.
Take out the yarns from your fingers, cut the loops and trim it to round shape. Trim a little at a time so that you won’t over trim it. Gauge the roundness of your mini pom-pom from all angles.

Apply this mini pom-pom to make Angry Birds crafts. Photo and tutorial from Make And Takes.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!! May 2010 bring luck, joy and health to you and your loved ones!!!!

I am writing this on the day of Christmas Eve…. where has the days gone? It was like yesterday since I started making kanzashi Christmas Trees, then glittering some stars, wire wound some stars, followed by making holly berries, wreath, crochet Christmas Tree, plus some other crafts that I didn’t published here!!! A month passed by in just a blink of an eye, now, I am making my last Christmas craft for the year.

I made 2 Christmas Gift Stockings for my kids with their names on them and they are my last minute sewing projects. I thought I can never make it for the dead-line since I have to stay at home and take care of my son 24/7 whose nanny is on a 1-week emergency leave. With my determination and 4 “very” late-nights sewing, I made it!!! Yawn…. I really need a good rest after this Christmas, perhaps hibernate until 2010, lol… Just kidding, I will still continue making handicrafts but in slower pace. Don’t forget that I have another giveaway draw in early January, so, please don’t go far!!!!

These stockings (approx. 48cm H x 35cm W) were made out of a combination of felt, fabric and yarn materials. The overall material is felt sewed together with fabric, embellished by crochet (see pattern below), pom-pom, felt and beads ornaments. The stocking hem is a knitting piece of pom-pom yarn (click here for the tutorial). I used 1 ball of pom-pom yarn for the hem, made 8 stitches (2 stitches in between the pom-poms) for the row and finished the whole ball to get the length, the dimension is 40cm (H) x 10cm (W). Joint both ends together by sewing up the last row to the first row to make a ring.

Nicole’s stocking has a big pom-pom snowman and a small Christmas tree, whilst Ian has a big crochet Christmas Tree and a small snowman. Both of them have their names appliqued on the stockings, each has a holly berry and are embellished with Christmas beads. As parents, we act fair to our children, happy for them and easy on us, right?

The details of making of are as follow:

Finally, Shaun The Sheep arrives in Craft Passion….. I know some of you have been waiting to see this. Sorry to keep you waiting, I have some good excuses for postponing of this tutorial:

1. Blame it to the bad weather here, it was raining almost everyday (monsoon is coming) and I can’t take outdoor photos of Shaun and Shirley, they are meant to be outdoors, right? [Browse the photos by using the Next button, I have taken lots of funny photos of Shaun, enjoy!]

2. I have a tough task… I was rushing for my daughter’s stage drama costume. She took up a role as a Queen and I was informed that I need to prepare for her own costume as the school can’t find one that fits her. I only had 1 week. Luckily I completed it just in time after burning a few late-nights in my craft room, phew….

I totally fell in love to this funny looking black face sheep last year when it was shown in the Disney Playhouse Channel which my daughter loves to watch. Shaun is a curious but resourceful sheep among the flock of its kind, it is funny and adventurous and often a trouble maker.

Back to the tutorial, this is an advanced level in pom pom making. If you have been following and trying my method of this, this, this, this and this, you should be able to do this.

In this tutorial, you need this:
1. Black and beige yarn, I used pure wool yarn for the beige as it looks more like a sheep (because it comes from the sheep LOL)
2. Pom pom maker of 35 and 45 mm
3. Template for trimming – Oblong oval template of 50mm width and 30mm height, 2 pcs. This is for the body.
4. Template for trimming – Oval template 25mm height, 20mm on the wider bottom and 15mm on the sharper top, 2 pcs. This is for the head and tail.
5. Thumb pins for the template
6. A pair of wiggle eyes [6mm]
7. Black cotton cord of 3-4mm, need about 320mm length
8. Floral wire gauge 20-22 [optional, only if you want to a bendable legs]
9. Key-chain ring [optional]
10. Sharp scissors
11. Wire Cutter
12. Fabric glue
13. Black felt for the ears [not shown in the photo]

Prepare the bendable legs:
1. Cut the black cotton cord to about 80mm length, tie a knot at the end of the cord, leaving about 5 to 10mm at the end. Cut floral wire by using the wire cutter to a length of 40mm. Prepare 4 sets.
2. Slowly insert the floral wire into the cord.
3. Push the wire until it goes into the knot a little bit. Cut away the excessive cord on both side. Put some fabric glue to “seal” the ends.
4. It should look like this after the glue is dried. Get all 4 legs done.

Prepare the rest of the body parts.
5. A pair of wiggle eyes [6mm], nothing to be done but waiting for assembly.
6. a pair of ears cut out from black felt, 20mm in length, 8mm on the widest part and 3mm on the slimmiest part.
7. Use 35mm pom pom maker to make 1 black pom pom and trim it with the face/tail template for the face.
8. Use 35mm pom pom maker to make another beige pom pom but this time wind a little lesser than usual cause you want to trim it to a small pom pom for the top hair with 25mm diameter if you look from the top, and 13mm height with flat bottom and a little dome on the top.
9. Use 45mm pom pom maker to make 1 beige pom pom and trim it with the body template. You can add a key-chain ring if you plan to make it as a key chain.
10. Use 35mm pom pom maker to make 1 beige pom pom and trim it with the face/tail template for the tail, you might want to trim it a little slimmer so that it wont look exactly like the face.

Attach the eyes, ears and top hair. The eyes shown here are slightly bigger which I replaced it later with the 6mm eyes that suits Shaun’s face better
Attach the tail to its body.
Set aside and let them dry. It took about 1 hour to dry till the extent that you can work on it again without fearing that it would fall apart. Have a drink and come back in an hour’s time. If you think that it is not secure enough for you to work on it, leave it to dry for a little longer.

Attach the head to the body.
Continue with your drink and come back another hour later.

Apply some fabric glue to the knot-less end of the leg. Insert it deep into the body. Do the same to the other 3 legs. Test the level of the legs by let it stand-up while holding it. Check and see if all 4 legs touch the table top. Do adjustment accordingly if they are not level.
You can put some more glue surrounding each legs, but not too much, just enough for tacking the surrounding yarn.
You can see clearly the position of where you can attach the legs

Leave it overnight to let the glue dries completely.

Now, your Shaun the Sheep is completed. You can bend its legs to post like I did in the above photos.
You can try to make Shirley, the fat sheep with the same method

I will still do some pom-pom projects this week. Hopefully you can have some gift ideas for the upcoming Christmas
Pom Pom is the easiest craft I found to be able to make various cartoon features. All you need is to trim and assemble it with fabric glue. This time I am demonstrating how to make pom poms for Sesame Street characters. I picked Elmo and Cookie Monster, the more popular characters from Sesame Street. I wanted to make Big Bird, but I couldn’t get the yellow yarn of its kind, sooo…. here you are, the tutorial for making Elmo and Cookie Monster Pom Pom

Tips: If this is the first time you landed in this blog and wanted to make pom pom, you might find these 2 post useful, Basic Pom Pom Making and Pom Pom Trimming.
Material you will need:
1. A Red pom pom of 70mm diameter [Elmo face]. Attached a key-chain holder if you prefer.
2. An Orange pom pom of 25mm diameter [nose].
3. A pair of 20mm diameter wiggle eyes.
4. A 20mm x 60mm black felt cut into the shape as shown [mouth].
5. Fabric glue

Apply some fabric glue on the center line of the black felt. Wait for 5-10 minutes before folding it so that the glue gets tacky. Secure it in this position until the center line sticks. I don’t have a spare hand, so I used my scissor to do the job for me.

Apply some fabric glue at the positions you want to place the nose. Do the same to the back of the eyes and the nose.

Stick the eyes and nose after 5-10 minutes.
Check if the mouth’s center line on the black felt is joined (it should by now, if not wait for another few minutes).
Elmo looks miserable without the mouth :p

Apply fabric glue at the position where you want to put the mouth. Do the same to the back of the black felt mouth. Wait for another 5-10 minutes before inserting the black felt into the pom pom.
Ewww…. Elmo is salivating from his mouth lol…

Finally, Elmo has its mouth and he is happy now!!!
Leave it overnight to let the glue dry completely.

You can make Cookie Monster the same way too, use Blue pom pom instead and omit the orange nose
Happy “Pom Poming”!!!

Wooooooooo!….. an eerie black widow spider pom pom arrived in Craft Passion to spice up your Halloween!!!!
When people describe Halloween, Jack O’ Lanterns, spiders, bat, haunted houses, halloween costumes, treats basket, spooky adventures to the woods, costume party, ghost story telling, graveyard, pumpkin carving etc comes to mind….. This is kind of fun celebrating Halloween!
After making pom-pom Jack O’ Lantern, I made it’s close associate….a black widow spider. These 2 make a popular duo for Halloween. Not only this, there is a crochet pattern at the bottom of this post for the spider web.

Pom Pom Black Widow Spider

Material you will need:
1. Yarn [Black and Red]
2. Pom Pom Maker [35mm and 45mm size]
3. Pipe Cleaner, 2 [I used red but you can use black]
4. A pair of wiggle eyes[5mm]
5. Hang strap
6. A pair of sharp scissors
7. Round templates for trimming [4mm and 2mm dia.] & thumb-pins
8. Fabric glue

Wind about 3 rounds of red yarn at the center of the 45mm pom pom maker. If your yarn is thin, you might need to wind more rounds.
Complete winding the whole pom pom maker with black yarn. Wind all black yarn on the the other arm.
Make into a pom-pom. Trim to 4mm dia. for the body by using 4mm round template.
Use 35mm pom-pom maker to make a small black pom-pom of 2mm dia by using 2mm round template to trim.
Attach the hang strap on the small pom-pom while tieing up the pom-pom.
If you want to hang the spider horizontally, attach the strap near to the red spot.

Cut the pipe cleaners in 8 nos. 5mm length. Bend 90° at the center.
Now you have a “body” pom-pom, a “head” pom-pom, 8 spiders legs and a pair of wiggle eyes ready for the assembly.
Apply some fabric glue generously at the desired position (on both body and head) before you attach the spider head to the body. Wait for about 5 to 10 minutes for the glue to get tacky before sticking them together.
Attached the wiggle eyes onto the head the same way too.
Apply some glue at the tip of the leg.
Insert it into the body until it reaches the center of the pom-pom.
Repeat the above step for the other 7 legs and your Black Widow Spider is DONE!!!
I re-bent the spider legs so that they are angled in such a way that all legs and spider’s stomach touch the ground. If you refer to the main photos, I further bent the tip of the spider leg another 90° to make it look like feet.
Don’t worry about the extra glue that looks white on the spider. It will dissapear when it is dry.
Tips: Trim the spider’s stomach to make it flat.
This is the completely dry spider, no more visible glue traces. You can hang it as a decoration at your Halloween corner, or tie it on your bag and bring it everywhere you go If you need a spider web to go with it, following is the Crochet pattern for it.

Spider Web
Finished Dimension: Approx. 14mm diameter [excluding the branches]
Abbreviations: ch = chain, sl knot = slip knot, sl st= slip stitch, dc = double crochet, fo = fasten off
Materials: crochet yarn (white), 1/0 crochet hook, stitch marker
Instructions:
beg sl knot
r1 – ch3, join with slst on the first ch to form a base ring.
r2 – ch3, place marker, *ch1, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r3 – ch3, place marker, *ch5, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r4 – ch3, place marker, *ch10, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r5 – ch3, place marker, *ch15, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r6 – ch3, place marker, *ch20, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r7 – ch3, place marker, *ch25, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker, fo, hide the yarn end.
Make 7 chained string with your preferred length and tie on each individual dc on r7. Cut excessive yarn end after tieing.
Tie your crochet spider web on the tree branches and hang your spider on it.

10 days to Halloween!!! My pom-pom fever hasn’t subsided so I made this Jack O’ Lantern pom-pom pumpkin!
I love Halloween, though it is not commonly celebrated here (except those costume parties organized meant for adults) but I have experienced it once during my short-term stay in the UK, and that gave me a wonderful memory. Seeing children dressed up in cute and spooky Halloween costumes, holding a Halloween basket, walking from door to door shouting “Treat or Trick” and they get treats in return, this is cute
I would love to carve a real pumpkin with spooky expression, place a tea light in it and put it outside my front door but I am in Malaysia…. I can’t find this type of pumpkin which is so orangie, big and beautiful, even if there is, the price must be sky-high. All we have here is Kabocha Pimpkin, which has a green blotchy skin that is hard and mmmm… “ugly” but tastes great in cooking.
So, no real pumpkin for me, nevermind! With pom-pom, I can make a small Halloween decoration in just 30 minutes. The step is pretty simple:
You need a 45mm pom-pom maker, some orange and brown color yarns, Pumpkin shape template for trimming, a pair of thumb-pins, fabric glue, black felt (cut into the facial features of a Jack O’ Lantern) and of course a pair of sharp scissors.
Wind the arm of the pom-pom maker with 2 – 3 layers of orange yarn.
A layer of brown yarn.
3 layers of orange yarn, 1 layer brown and 3 layers orange again.
Cut the yarn across and you will see the stripes of brown yarn in between the orange. If you want to know more about the basic of making pom-pom using the pom-pom maker, click here.
Untrimmed pom-pom pumpkin. You can see the brown stripes run from top to bottom of the pumpkin.
You can tie an additional string on the pom-pom if you plan to hang it.
Position the pumpkin template on both sides to trim the pom-pom into pumpkin shape. Read more about trimming a pom-pom fast and easy here if you haven got a clue on how to do it.
Trim the pom-pom close to the template. Slightly under-trim is better than over-trim. Do the same on the other side, 90 deg to the left or right.
You can see the brown stripes more clearly now.
I prefer to apply some fabric glue on the tied string, so that the pom-pom’s shape is “fixed”. Make sure that the fabric glue get into inside of the center.

Trim lightly on your pom-pom pumpkin to make it look neat if necessary. Remember to fluff the pom-pom often enough to get the “hiding” yarn out and trim it.
Lastly, attach the facial features onto the pom-pom with fabric glue. Remember to spread a thick and generous amount (but not overflow) of fabric glue onto the wrong side of the felt, wait 5 -10 minutes until it is tacky before mounted them onto the pom-pom.
Here there is, a Pom Pom Jack O’ Lantern!
What’s coming up next? Still a pom-pom project…. it is a black widow spider for Halloween Stay tuned!

So, you’ve made some pom-poms for your project and want to make use of it, to decorate it etc, but…. the size is too big or you want it in another shape other than round. You need to trim it, of course. Trimming needs skill and it is just like a hair dresser’s job. Lack of skill may cause over trimming and unevenness, the more you trim it and try to get to the right shape you want, the pom-pom become smaller and smaller. The worst part is, after hours spent in trimming, you still can’t get the shape you want and the original pom-pom is snipped beyond recognition, you get frustrated and give-up. What a waste!!! I have gone through this (I am not a hair dresser) so I know what you’re going to face with “the trim”. I found a good tip after some research. The following tutorial will show you how to trim your pom-pom to your desired shape and size easy and fast to me, it never failed!!!!

Trimming of Pom-Pom

First, make a cardboard template of the shape and size you want. Punch a thumb-pin through the center of the template. (Opppsss…. don’t get confused about the printing on the cardboard. I salvaged it from an Ikea packing :p)
I demonstrated it in round shape, but you can draw other shapes like oval, heart, or other shape you like.
(The original size of the pom-pom was about 50mm in diameter, made by using the 35mm pom-pom maker. And I wanted to trim it down to 30mm.)

Find the center of the pom-pom. The easiest way is to find where the string is tied, that is the center of the pom-pom.
Place the cardboard template onto the pom-pom with the thumb-pin tack on the center. Do it both sides.
Trim the pom-pom near to the template. Repeat again by moving the template 90 deg to the side of the pom-pom.
Remove the templates and fluff up the smaller smaller pom-pom, see, it became smaller and still maintains its rounded shape, neat! Trim lightly on any unevenness so that you get a beautiful round pom-pom.

Hair Barrettes
Get the hair barrettes you want to attach the pom-pom onto.
Apply some fabric glue (my favorite) generously onto the place you want to stick the pom-pom to, wait about 5 to 10 minutes until the glue becomes tacky.
Tie the string to the hair barrettes to further secure it, trim off the extra string. Wait for it to dry by leaving it over night.
I finished 2 to make a pair of perfect gift for a little girl. This pair is for my daughter, to match with her Bareback Halter-Neck Knitted Top I knitted for her.
I am making more of this, watch out for my next pom-pom projects

Recently, I fell in love in making Pom Pom. At first, I bought the Pom Pom Maker just for the purpose of making a Pom Pom elastic band for the Pom Pom Faux Mink Scarf I knitted for the giveaway. But I fell in love deeply with it after making 1. It is easy to make and fun, most importantly the possibility of coming up with various adorable things is unlimited and I started to crave making all kinds of things I could possible think of. Hair barrattes, Pumpkin, Spider, Butterfly, Elmo, Cookies Monster, Shaun The Sheep, Snowman etc…. the list never ends. This would be some great gift ideas for upcoming Christmas. Before I can show all those cutie things I can make, I would like to share with you the basics of making a Pom Pom by using the Pom pom Maker from Clover. Of course, other than using this maker, you can make a simple kit yourself by cutting a circular cardboard with a hole in the center. But I find that the Clover kit is easy to use and fast to make. I wonder if Clover will pay me for this product review, hee hee hee! Well, I just discovered that Clover has a video showing how to use this Pom Pom maker….
Any how, you need to do quite a lot of trimming in Pom Pom and I have a tip on how to trim it fast to other shapes and sizes, watch out my next post for the tip.

This is the kit of 4 Pom Pom makers. I bought with the size of 35mm, 45mm, 65mm, and 85mm.

Tip: I apply fabric glue in this area after taking the Pom Pom kit out to ensure the yarn won’t come out when you accidentally pull the Pom Pom.
Open both arms and separate the Kit from the Pom Pom you have made.
Be sure to fluff the Pom Pom regularly when trimming so that all yarn is straightened out.
A little skill is needed if you plan for heavily trim, but I have a tip on how to do it fast and nice.
This is the lightly trim version of a round Pom Pom.
See how many I can make in a short period of time! I did all these in 1 hour, including the trimming. Noticed the 2 orange small Pom Poms, that are heavily trimmed version, they used to be in the size of the one next to them, but I trimmed them down to make a pair of hair pins for my daughter. It is from the left over yarn of her bareback halter neck knitted top.
If you want to make a Pom Pom elastic band like the first photo, just glue the elastic band onto the center of the Pom Pom. Make sure you wait until the fabric glue is tacky on both sides (about 5 to 10 minutes) before joining them together. Let it fully dry over night before using it.
