Wool roving is not cheap, making a big felted project needs a lot of them. If the whole piece of felted project is done purely from wool roving, it is quite costly and wasting your money. In order to be economical on bigger felting project, we can use a method called felted sculptural core. Basically, it is to needle felt the core with other materiel to the shape and size you want, then needle felt colored wool roving to cover the core. I read that we can needle felt a sculptural core with major fiber, so, I tried it with polyester stuffing material since it is readily available in my craft room. Other materials like wool batting, wool core are those commonly used in the felting core. As long as the fiber can be caught and tangle-up among themselves with the barbs of the needle, it can be used to build the core.

I have made a few carrots with this method and really love the result. A friend told me in facebook page that she placed a bell in her felting cat toy and her cat went nuts on it… lol. Apart the usual photo and written tutorial, again, I have prepared a bionic-woman video to show you the process. Go to next page for all the details. Now, the bunnies I made last year have a permanent carrot boat to sit on {click the link to get the bunny sachet pattern and tutorial].

I find needle felting quite interesting, besides creating beautiful crafts and handmade, it also has some therapeutic effects. When you are frustrated, you jab on the wool to release all the tension and stress. When you can’t focus, you jab the wool and you will find that you get all the concentration that you thought you can’t. When you are happy, you will find every needle going in and out the wool is so beautiful. When you are surrounded with noise, as a temporary escapade, you fall into the small world between the wool and the needle that are quite and peaceful. When you are in pain, you jab with full concentration then you get into meditation and forget about what’s bothering you. Please tell me if you have any of the experience mentioned here above. At least this is what I found through out these few weeks of felting and jabbing and piercing. I truly enjoy it.

Look, what have I made from the plain mini felt Easter eggs? I have turned them into little tweet tweet birdies and some other cuties. Hope this will get you into the mood of spring and Easter.

Previously, you have learned how to make felted egg with wet felting, now, you can decorate the eggs into some cuties with needle felting method. This tutorial is showing little birdies by adding wings, beak, eyes and tail with felt and wool. You can adapt the method and make them into egg-shaped chicks or embellish the eggs with polka dots and stripes just like those at the back. It is all up to your creativity, try to make something out of the box from the eggs.

Again, to show you how I made the little birdie, I made a short video to show you the process with my bionic-women hands. I used ready-made felt mostly for the birdies plus a little wool roving for it’s tail and eyes. It is a lot faster and easier to use pre-cut felt to needle felt to the birdie than jabbing the wool into a desired shape. This time, my voice won’t appear in the video because I added one of my favorite songs as the background music. I hope the subtitle or caption is good enough for you to read through, pause the video if you think I go too fast. I love to craft while listening to my favorite songs, or radio, or sometimes watching TV. But with this craft, I won’t recommend you to watch TV while doing needle felting. You need full concentration when you needle felt to make sure your needle is poking on the right place and not on your fingers or other places. The needle is quite sharp and easy to break if bent, so be sure you know where it goes – straight to the point.

So….. have you got your needle felting tools and materials ready? Let’s go to the tutorial and have fun piercing the eggs!!!

Frankly, I have been busy with wool felting recently, be it wet felting or needle felting, this craft is absolutely addictive. I will be showing some felting tutorials as I go with it and hopefully to share some easy-to-make felting projects soon. If you haven’t tried felting before, get yourself some wool and felting needle from craft shop, trust me, you are going to love it.

There is a short video clip at the end of the page to show you how to do wet felting. I demo the technique with quill size Easter Eggs, just in time for the upcoming Easter decoration and celebration. Feel free to adapt this method to make felt ball and many other projects as long as it can be done practically, such as felt cover over an object etc….. more to show later.

I have edited the video so that it plays a little faster while I roll the wool, so please don’t think that I am a bionic woman though I always dream to be one (by the way, I was born in the 70′s and Bionic Woman was one of my favorites TV series, oh… and not forgetting Six Million Dollar Man too) . I have made a few video tutorials previously but this is the first time where I narrated it with my own voice. I was laughing out loud with tears in my eyes yesterday when I played it back, please pardon my Asian accent which sounds a little funny but I truly hope that you can understand what I was trying to tell you . Don’t say I didn’t warn you, if you think you can’t take my voice and English, please switch off your speaker, there is a subtitle in the video, so you are not missing anything out. Or, if you think you need something to laugh out loud now, go ahead with the speaker on .

As usual, I included the step-by-step photos and instruction below in case you find it useful to have some still images to refer to.

[Remark: curious about the cute little pom pom chicks in the photo, you can make it with this tutorials, it is an easy project that kids can make too.]
