Pom Pom Shaun The Sheep Tutorial

Posted on Last updated: /

Finally, Shaun The Sheep the Pom Pom Sheep has arrived in Craft Passion….. I know some of you have been waiting to see this Pom Pom Sheep. Sorry to keep you waiting, but I have some good excuses for postponing this tutorial 😬

1. Blame it on the bad weather here, it was raining almost every day (monsoon is coming), and I can’t take outdoor photos of Pom Pom Sheep Shaun and Shirley; they are meant to be outdoors, right?

2. I have a tough task… I was rushing for my daughter’s stage drama costume. She took up a role as a Queen and I was informed that I need to prepare her own costume as the school couldn’t find one that fit her. I only had 1 week. Luckily I completed it just in time after burning a few late nights in my craft room, phew…

I totally fell in love with this funny-looking blackface sheep last year when it was shown on the Disney Playhouse Channel, which my daughter loves to watch. Shaun is a curious but resourceful sheep among the flock of its kind; it is funny, adventurous, and often a trouble maker.

Back to this Pom Pom Sheep tutorial, you will need to do a little trimming to sculpt the shape of the pom-poms, then assemble them together with glue. Prepare some Black and Beige yarn for pom-pom making, preferably wool yarn, so that it looks more like a sheep. A pair of 6mm googly eyes, black cord, wire, black felt, and a keychain if you want to make it into a sheep keychain.

Besides gathering the above materials, you will need the following tools to make this sheep pom-pom. To make a pom-pom, you will need a pom pom maker; for this tutorial, we need 2 different sizes: 1 3/8″ and 1 3/4″. We used the Clover brand pom-pom makers, and you can buy them from the affiliate link. Next, prepare a pair of oval-shaped templates of 1 3/16″ x 2″ long for the trimming of the pom pom for the body, and, another pair of round-tipped tear-drop-shape templates of 1/2″ x 3/4″ with 1″ long for the head and tail.

Other supplies you need to gather are some thumb pins, a pair of sharp scissors, wire cutters, and glue (fabric glue and tacky glue will be of great choice)

  • A pair of googly eyes [6mm / 1/4"]
  • Black cotton cord of 3-4mm (1/8"), need about 1' length
  • Floral wire gauge 20-22 [optional, only if you want bendable legs]
  • Key chain
  • Black felt for the ears

Tools

  • Pom pom maker of 1 ⅜" and 1¾"
  • Template for trimming – oval-shaped templates of 1 3/16" x 2" long, 2 pcs. This is for the body.
  • Template for trimming – round-tipped tear-drop-shape templates of 1/2″ x 3/4″ with 1″ long, 2 pcs. This is for the head and tail.
  • Thumb pins for the template
  • Sharp scissors
  • Wire Cutter
  • Fabric glue or tacky glue

Instructions

  1. Gather and prepare the needed materials and tools as listed above.pom pom sheep
  2. Let's begin to make pom pom sheep by preparing the parts by following these instructions. pom pom sheep
    Prepare the bendable legs:
[1] Cut the black cotton cord to about 3" length, tie a knot at the end of the cord, leaving about ¼" at the end. Cut floral wire by using the wire cutter to a length of 1½". Prepare 4 sets.
[2] Slowly insert the floral wire into the cord.
[3] Push the wire until it goes into the knot a little bit. Cut away the excess cord on both sides. Put some fabric glue to seal the ends.
[4] It should look like this after the glue is dried. Get all 4 legs done.

Prepare the rest of the body parts:
[5] A pair of wiggle eyes
[6] A pair of ears cut out from black felt, ¾" in length, 5/16" on the widest part and ⅛" on the slimmest part.
[7] Use a 1⅜" pom-pom maker to make 1 black pom-pom and trim it with the face/tail template for the face.
[8] Use a 1⅜" pom-pom maker to make another beige pom-pom but this time wind a little lesser than usual cause you want to trim it to a small pom pom for the top hair with 25mm diameter if you look from the top and 13mm height with a flat bottom and a little dome on the top.
[9] Use a 1¾" pom pom maker to make 1 beige pom pom and trim it with the body template. You can add a key-chain if you plan to make it as a key chain.
[10] Use a 1 ⅜" pom pom maker to make 1 beige pom pom and trim it with the face/tail template for the tail, you might want to trim it a little slimmer so that it won’t look exactly like the face.
  3. How to assemble pom-pom sheep

Attach the eyes, ears and top hair. The eyes shown here are slightly bigger which I replaced it later with the 6mm eyes that suit Shaun’s face better. 🙂
Attach the tail to its body.
Set aside and let them dry. It took about 1 hour to dry to the extent that you can work on it again without fearing that it would fall apart. Have a drink and come back in an hour’s time. If you think that it is not secure enough for you to work on it, leave it to dry for a little longer.pom pom sheep

Attach the head to the body. Continue with your drink and come back another hour later.pom pom sheep

Apply some fabric glue to the knot-less end of the leg. Insert it deep into the body. Do the same to the other 3 legs.
Test the level of the legs by letting it stand-up while holding it. Check and see if all 4 legs touch the tabletop. Do adjustment accordingly if they are not level.
You can put some more glue surrounding each leg, but not too much, just enough for tacking the surrounding yarn.pom pom sheep

You can see clearly the position of where you can attach the legs.pom pom sheep

Leave it overnight to let the glue dries completely.pom pom sheep

Shaun the Sheep Pom Pom Sheep is completed. You can bend its legs to post as I did in the above photos.pom pom sheep

You can try to make Shirley, the fat sheep with the same method. pom pom sheep
