Tad, the Crochet Teddy Bear, is now ready to show off his stylish new clothing, thanks to this adorable crochet top pattern!
As promised in our previous crochet teddy bear pattern, we’re excited to share the details of this adorable garment. With its classic red and white stripes, this crochet top is not only a stylish addition to Tad’s wardrobe but also a fun project for crocheters of all levels. The pattern provides a playful yet sophisticated look that’s perfect for the large-size crochet animals in our Animal Wildlife Collection, such as crochet cow, crochet elephant, crochet horse, and crochet cat, just to name a few.
This crochet top is a real cutie! You may wear it stylishly with the buttons on the front or rear to give your amigurumi’s wardrobe two different styles. The buttons make it easy to put on and take off, so you can switch up Tad’s look in a jiffy. Whether Tad’s feeling classic with buttons in the front or a bit more playful with buttons in the back, this top is made for fun and keeps things super simple. Plus, those stripes? They’re just the thing to make Tad stand out from the teddy crowd!
Skill Level
It’s really easy to make this cute crochet top for your amigurumi friend. Basic crochet stitches like chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and half double crochet will get you done.
Don’t worry if you’re a little rusty or if this is your first time. We’ve got your back. Take a detour to our “Crochet for Beginners” guide as a quick break to get those skills back in shape.
Now, let’s get those crochet supplies and start making!
Crochet Supplies
Gather the following supplies for the crochet top pattern:
- Yarn in the colors that speak to you (I went with a classic combo of red and white for that pop of personality).
- 4 small decorative buttons to add a dash of charm to the crochet top.
- A 2.5 mm crochet hook that matches the light worsted yarn weight.
- Tapestry needle to weave in those ends, and add the buttons.
- A pair of scissors for snipping the yarn.
With these supplies at the ready, you’re all set to crochet a masterpiece!
How To Crochet Top For Amigurumi
With all your supplies ready, let’s get to the detailed instructions and step-by-step on how to crochet a cool top for your amigurumi. You can get a copy of a written crochet top pattern at the end of the post.
Crochet the sleeve parts with single crochet stitches according to the written crochet pattern provided below. Set the sleeve parts aside until they are ready to be joined with the main top piece.
Begin crocheting the main top with a row of foundation chains, then single crochet from the bottom and work your way up. Take note that there are reduction stitches in this part of the crochet pattern. To make a decreased stitch, you need to crochet two sc together to reduce them from two to one stitch.
Join the sleeves to the body piece at row 11.
As per the crochet pattern, the first sleeve should be attached at the 13th stitch. Therefore, after crocheting 12 stitches on the body piece, pick up the sleeve to make the 13th stitch and continue.
The 13th stitch should be made one stitch away from the vertical seam of the sleeve. This will set the sleeve join at the bottom and be less noticeable.
Crochet around the sleeve, stopping 2 stitches from the beginning. After skipping two stitches on the body and sleeve sections, keep crocheting the body until the second sleeve piece needs to be joined.
Here is a closer view of the sleeve once it is attached to the crochet top’s body.
Continue to crochet and join the second sleeve according to the instructions in the crochet pattern.
This photo shows the crochet top after the neckline has been finished with slip stitches.
Continue crocheting slip stitches along the edge of the crochet top to create the base of the placket.
The placket is then constructed using half double crochet stitches.
Likewise, crochet a placket on the opposite side of the edge with new yarn. But, instead of using half double crochet stitches all the way, substitute 4 stitches with chain stitches to form 4 buttonholes.
Stitch to close the gaps of the skipped stitches between the sleeves and the body.
Hide all yarn ends and tidy up the crochet top.
Lastly, stitch 4 small buttons on the placket and fasten them with the buttonholes.
The crochet top is now ready to be put on to the amigurumi.
