CRAFT SUPPLIES FOR THE BUTTERFLY CROCHET PATTERN
4 things! That’s right, you heard it right. This free crochet pattern only utilizes 4 items: yarn, a crochet hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. Feel free to use your leftover yarn from previous crochet projects as this design requires small amounts of yarn. For the hook, you should choose a hook size that corresponds to the type of yarn you are using. Do check out this video tutorial for more explanation on yarn weights and hook sizes.
I used crochet thread yarn as the yarn of my choice. For the tools, I used a 1.75 mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle. Generally, a smaller hook works best for thinner weights of yarn. Furthermore, lighter or thinner yarn produces smaller butterflies, whereas thicker yarns make a larger butterfly.
Some knowledge of basic crochet stitches is required, such as chain stitch, single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, treble or triple crochet stitch, stitch, and slip stitches (sl st) and also the know-how on fasten off. However, if you’re unfamiliar with these terms, you may check out my guide to crochet for beginners. The guide not only explains the crochet abbreviations but also talks about the different types of yarn, such as acrylic yarn, cotton yarn, worsted weight yarn, and so on. In addition, there are also written instructions on how to choose crochet hook sizes, yarn, tapestry needles, and many additional crochet tools.
IDEAS FOR CROCHET BUTTERFLIES
One of the ways you can style this beautiful butterfly is to make a butterfly crochet applique for hats and wearables. Pair this free pattern with crochet leaves and crochet flowers to make a flourish design. You can use them to decorate a Mother’s Day card like I did or place them on your scrapbook pages. Furthermore, you may attach a hairpin behind this pretty butterfly and wear it as hair clips. This would make the perfect gift for a friend who loves to accessorize.
Also, instead of clothespins & hair clips, try making them for hair bands, earrings, necklace pendants or rings. They will work just as well. In addition, you may also make a butterfly brooch with safety pins. Make a few of these crochet butterflies with various color combinations and pin them on bags, crochet hats, and notebook covers to spice up these everyday items. I also made a couple for myself and placed them in my favorite books to use as bookmarks.
If you prefer to make the crochet butterfly for a bigger project, I would recommend building a swamp of butterflies on the wall. I have a plan to replace the paper butterflies in my daughter’s room that I showed you some years ago with these crochet butterflies. With various shades of colors and yarn weights to create different sizes of colorful butterflies swamp, I am sure this wall decor idea will produce a stunning design.
