With the growing awareness of the need to reduce the use of plastic bags during grocery shopping, more and more people have adopted the practice of bringing their own market bags. Here is a free crochet pattern for a lovely market bag you can make it yourself.
Wait, did I just say “a” crochet market bag pattern? In fact, the crochet bag pattern is available in three sizes: Large, Medium, and Small. We created them in three sizes so that you may choose your preferred size or crochet them all for a variety of purposes.
- Large Market Bag – for general grocery shopping of larger items,
- Medium Market Bag- for a quick shopping trip to grab something quickly. It is great as a crochet-on-the-go bag too
- Small Market Bag – the perfect size for your water tumbler and sandwiches in your lunch bag.
Skill Knoweldge Needed
We’ve made these free crochet market bag patterns as beginner-friendly as possible by including detailed instructions and step-by-step photos in the section below on how to crochet it for beginners. In any case, if you’re having trouble grasping this, we have a crochet tutorial for beginners that you can use as a reference.
The basic crochet stitches you need to know are chain stitches, slip stitches, single crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches, double crochet stitches, and the decrease stitches.
Construction Method Of this Crochet Market Bag
The construction of this crochet market tote bag pattern starts at the bottom and works its way up, finishing with the straps. Because it is a one-piece construction, no parts need to be joined. As a result, it’s super neat and simple.
As you can see from the photo, this crochet pattern for a market bag has two important design elements: the “filet crochet mesh stitch” and the “corner cluster.” Don’t worry if you don’t know what the names mean. They are just groups of stitches. Here’s what you need to know about these stitches:
- Filet Crochet Mesh Stitch: This grid-like mesh stitch crochet pattern is made up of double crochet and chain stitch repetitions. Here’s a video that demonstrates how to make this basic crochet filet mesh stitch in rows.
- Corner Cluster: A Corner Cluster is simply two double crochet stitches, two chain stitches, and two more double crochet stitches crocheted into the chain space at the corner of a square.
The Base
The square bottom of the crochet market bag is constructed in rounds from the center out. It’s a granny square variation constructed with filet crochet mesh stitch and the traditional 4 corner clusters.
The Body
Here’s the cool part of the bag, and the magic starts when you crochet the body. You might think that the base’s corner clusters would become the market bag’s corners, but that’s not the case.
The crochet pattern makes the new corners between the corner clusters on the first round of the body pattern. With this, the mesh market bag eventually gets a cool design with 4 columns of corner clusters and a wide chevron pattern that goes all the way to the top of the bag.
The Straps
As we’ve already said, the straps are crocheted along with the market bag as a single piece. It is done on the last two rounds of the crochet market bag. The straps are made with simple single crochet stitches for large and medium market bags and slip stitches for small market bags.
Let’s get into the details of how to crochet this interesting mesh market bag.
Crochet Supplies
The only material required to crochet this mesh market bag is yarn. We used raffia yarns because they are lightweight, stain-resistant, and hold up well to the shape of the market bag. Nevertheless, you can always replace them with other comparable yarns that are good for making bags. Check the required quantity for each bag size in the materials list in the pattern section below.
Crochet Tools
Like other crochet projects, you need a crochet hook to make this bag. We used a 3 mm crochet hook to crochet with raffia yarn. If you use other yarns, check the label to see what size crochet hook to use, and keep in mind that different yarn weights and hook sizes may make a market bag of a different size.
For raffia yarn, we use a steam setting on iron to gently press the crocheted item to block and shape it. For other yarns, usually, wet blocking, spray blocking, or steam blocking is needed depending on the yarn fiber you are using. Read more on the three blocking methods for yarn other than raffia yarn.
After the crocheting is done, you’ll also need a tapestry needle to weave in the ends of the yarn and scissors to cut the yarn.
How To Crochet A Market Bag For Beginners
When we made a crochet project, we wanted it to be something that crocheters of all skill levels could make. But this isn’t always the case because everyone understands things in different ways. As a result, we always spent a great deal of time making our patterns as simple to follow as possible, including taking photos to illustrate the essential details of each step.
Here are the explanations on how to read the crochet pattern and make this crochet market bag easy to follow. For experienced crocheters, you can skip all of this and go directly to the written crochet pattern at the end of the article.
Foundation Ring
The written pattern:
Foundation Ring: ch3, Join with sl st in the first st.
Start making the base of the market bag with a slip knot and three chain stitches. Slip stitch (abbreviated sl st) into the first stitch to make a foundation ring.
Base – Round 1
Written Pattern:
Round 1: ch3, ch, [dc, ch2, dc, ch] repeat 3 times, dc. Join with hdc in the first st. {20}
Begin the first round with three chain stitches (abbreviation ch), which count as one double crochet stitch (abbreviation dc), followed by another chain stitch (abbreviation ch). Then, crochet the following three times: *a dc into the foundation ring, two chain stitches, another dc into the ring, and a chain stitch.*
Finish the first round by working a double crochet into the ring, followed by a half double crochet (abbreviated hdc) in the first stitch of the round. This final “horizontal” hdc is counted as two stitches.
Counting the total number of stitches, there should be 20 in this round.
★ Important note to recap that applies throught out the crochet pattern:
- three chain stitches at the beginning of the round is counted as one double crochet stitch
- half double crochet stitch at the end of the round is counted as two stitches.
Base – Round 2
The Written Pattern:
Round 2: ch3, dc in the hdcsp, [ch, dc in next chsp, ch, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2sp] repeat 3 times, ch, dc in next chsp, ch, 2dc in hdcsp. Join with hdc in the first st. {36}
Similar to the first round, begin the second round with 3 ch stitches and a dc in the space between the hdc stitches (this is the space of the horizontal hdc stitch of round one), then repeat the following pattern three times:
*crochet the “filet mesh” with ch stitch, followed by a dc stitch into the chain space (abbreviation chsp), ch stitch, then crochet the “corner cluster” with 2 dc stitches, 2 ch stitches, then 2 dc stitches into the 2-chain space (abbreviation ch2sp), forming a square corner*
Upon completion of the three repetitions, the square will have three corners. crochet ch, dc in chsp, ch, then 2 dc in the same hdc space as the beginning of the round to complete the second round. Join with a hdc stitch in the first stitch to close the round.
Counting the total number of stitches, there should be 36 in this round.
Base – Round 3
Round 3: ch3, dc in the hdcsp, [(ch, sk, dc in next st) repeat 3 times, ch, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch2sp] repeat 3 times, [ch, sk, dc in next st] repeat 3 times, ch, 2dc in hdcsp. Join with hdc in the first st. {52}
Again, start the third round with 3 ch stitches and a double crochet in the hdc space. Then, crochet the following pattern three times: (3 filet mesh stitches + ch, corner cluster).
When you crochet the filet mesh stitch pattern, be sure to crochet the dc stitch of the mesh stitch into the dc stitch of the round before. Then, finish the fourth corner by making two dc stitches in the same hdc space as the beginning of the round and joining them with a hdc stitch in the first stitch.
Counting the total number of stitches, there should be 52 in this round.
Base – Round 4 & Onwards
You should have noticed a repetition pattern here, which is to fill the stitches between the corner clusters with more filet mesh stitches. So, continue crocheting the base of the market bag in the same manner.
For a large market bag, crochet 12 rounds. For a medium market bag, crochet 10 rounds. Make 8 rounds of crochet for a small market bag.
Block Base
Before beginning to crochet the upright side of the market bag, lightly iron the crochet base (with a steam setting). Pull the corners of the crochet base to adjust the shape while it is still warm.
It’s fine if the square’s sides aren’t perfectly straight, but make sure they are all the same length.
Body – Round 1
Let us now construct the upright portion of the crochet market bag. The number of stitches in each round must be kept constant to keep the bag upright.
Because each corner cluster increased by four stitches, we must decrease four stitches at the midpoints between the two corner clusters to maintain the same number of stitches for each round.
Make a dc 3 stitches together decrement (abbreviation dc3tog) on the filet in the middle between the corner clusters on the first round of the body. This decrement stitch reduces 5 stitches to 1, that’s a 4 stitches reduction.
Rep for the remaining square sides. These will be the “real” bottom corners of the market bag.
Body – Round 2 & Onwards
From Round 2 onwards, make a dc 2 stitches together decrement (abbreviation dc2tog) on the 2 filet dc stitches before and after the first round’s decrement stitch. This will remove another four stitches, resulting in the same number of stitches in each round again.
This is what it looks like after 2 rounds of crocheting the body patterns. The crochet market bag has developed an immediate upright structure.
Continue crocheting in the same pattern as Round 2 until the desired height is achieved, or follow the number of rounds specified in the crochet pattern.
You can use different colors of yarn to make the crochet market bag look more interesting.
Finishing Border & Straps
Once the height is reached, crochet the border and straps together to complete the mesh market bag.
First, make a ch stitch at the beginning of the round, then single crochet (sc) in the hdc chain space, then single crochet in the dc stitches only, i.e. skip all chain stitches except the chain 2 space.
Crochet 2 single crochet stitches in the chain 2 space of the corner cluster.
Continue crocheting for one round and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round.
Create the straps while working on the second round of the border. The strap begins after the chain space in the first corner cluster.
Crochet the strap using the number of chain stitches specified in the pattern, you may also increase or decrease the numbers to achieve the desired length.
Continue with single crochet stitches beginning at the chain 2 space in the second corner cluster until you reach the next corner cluster; make the strap with chain stitches again. Join the round with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
Next, make a single crochet stitch all the way around the third round of the border. But skip one single crochet stitch right before and after the strap. Again, join the last stitch of the round to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch.
Weave all the yarn into the stitches to tie it off and hide it.
Shaping
Use a warm iron on the steam setting and a medium heat setting to block this freshly finished filet crochet mesh stitch market bag.
The crochet market bag is done and ready for its shopping spree trip.
