Is This A Beginner-Friendly Pattern?
Yes! This quick and simple crochet pattern is suitable for all new crocheters. It only takes about 30 minutes to make, so it’s ideal if you want to crochet but are short on time.
We’ll walk you through each step in great detail, so read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the pattern.
Who Are These Crochet Pants For?
Most of our crochet doll clothes patterns are designed to fit our amigurumi crochet animals, which range in size from 11 to 13 inches tall.
This particular pair of crochet pants with suspenders is 5″ long and can fit dolls with the widest hip girth of 13″ and leg girth of 8″.
Can I Crochet It Bigger For Baby?
You certainly can adapt the exact same pattern to crochet pants for babies. The simplest way is by using a slightly bulkier yarn and a larger crochet hook. Different yarn weights and hook sizes will result in different stitch sizes and, consequently, different crochet piece sizes. Read more about crochet tension gauge.
Here are the yarn weights and hook sizes you’ll need to make a larger size of crochet pants for babies aged newborn to 24 months. We also projected the pants sizes after taking diaper bulkiness into account.
- Newborn – 18 inches.
- Recommended yarn & hook size: DK / Light Worsted, 4.5 mm
- 3 Months – 20 inches,
- Recommended yarn & hook size: DK / Light Worsted, 5.0 mm
- 6 months – 21 inches,
- Recommended yarn & hook size: DK / Light Worsted, 5.5 mm
- 12 months – 22 inches,
- Recommended yarn & hook size: Worsted, 5.0 mm
- 18 months – 23 inches,
- Recommended yarn & hook size: Worsted, 5.5 mm
- 24 months – 24 inches,
- Recommended yarn & hook size: Worsted, 6.0 mm
Important: This is only an estimation. If you need a more accurate measurement, make a gauge swatch with the hook and yarn of your choice to determine the stitch size. It is always preferable to make the crochet pants slightly larger than too small. Babies grow, and they will be able to wear them one day.
You can crochet longer pants by adding more rounds.
Crochet Supplies Required
For doll-size pants, all you need is a 2.5 mm crochet hook, a small amount of DK/light-worsted yarn in a single color, and four pieces of buttons to fasten the straps to the main pants.
Crochet Tension
Do note that the tension gauge for a 4” x 4” is single crochet of 21 sts x 24 rows for this doll-size crochet pants.
You may have grabbed the same hook size and yarn as mentioned in the pattern. However, depending on how loose or tight you crochet, the finished item may still be a different size.
We recommend making a swatch before starting the project to ensure the right size for your doll.
Crochet Stitches
Here is a list of basic crochet stitches that are used in this crochet pants pattern:
- Chain
- Single Crochet
- Single crochet 2 together
- Slip Stitch
The crochet pants are mainly single crochet stitches, while the suspender straps are constructed with chain and single crochet stitches.
The Pants
The pants are made by crocheting in rounds and joining each round with a slip stitch. Crochet is done from the bottom up, beginning with the leg parts and working up to the waist.
Sew four buttons along the top edge of the pants so that we can slip the suspender belt loops through them. The pants can be worn with or without a suspender belt.
The Suspender Strap
The suspender strap is made by sewing two long straps together at the back for a short length. Each end of the strap has a loop for fastening to the pants’ button..
We also have crochet instructions if you need a different length of strap to fit your wearer.
There you have it, a pair of crochet suspender pants for your lovely plush toy! You can also create colorful crochet pants by changing the yarn color after each round or using a different color for the pants strap! This is an excellent idea if you want to use any leftover yarn from previous crochet projects.
