crochet summer hat pattern

Recently, I have done 2 halter tops (a knitted top and a crochet top) for my daughter. Now I challenged myself to design and crochet this YoYo Puff Crochet Hat with a wide brim to protect her from the sunbeam. Do you think it is lovely?

I would say that it is a perfect crochet sun hat for spring and summer. Look at the cavities between the yo-yo puffs, it makes the hat airy, so your head won’t get warm by the heat captured in the hat during summer. The wide brim is just nice to block away a certain degree of sunlight. And, I used the 100% cotton yarns leftover from the granny square halter top (the one she is wearing), I love the colors!!!!

The size of this crochet hat fits girls ages 7 to 12 years old with a head circumference of about 21.5 inches. The length of the brim is 3.5″ so it is wide enough to hide direct sunlight from the face. Here are the craft supplies you will need and the construction method for crocheting this beautiful hat:

Yarn:
DK, light worsted, I used 100 % cotton but you can use other materials that you prefer. The quantity of yarn to make the yoyo puff is about 150 grams in various colors. We used 5 colors that were left over from the granny square crochet top. Besides, you will need about 50 grams of light blue yarn and 15 grams of white yarn for the wide brim.

Tools:
2 sizes of crochet hooks are used in this crochet hat pattern, a 3.0 mm for the crochet yoyo puff and 2.5 mm for the brim. You need a tapestry needle to sew up the puffs and the brim to form this hat. Also, a pair of scissors to cut the yarn and that’s all you need.

Construction Method:
The YoYo Puff Crochet Hat uses 43 pcs. of colorful Puffs, click the link for the YoYo Puff crochet pattern and tutorial on how to crochet a yoyo puff. These puffs are crocheted by using a 3.0 mm crochet hook and each of the puffs measures 1.5″ in diameter. Since the puffs are going to be sewn together to make the hat crown, leave an 8″ yarn when making the puff.

The brim is crocheted separately with white and blue yarn. While the white color part is crocheted using all single crochet stitch, the blue part is crocheted using moss stitch. What is moss stitch? The moss stitch is done by crocheting single crochet stitch and chain stitch alternatingly, where the single crochet stitches are working on the chain spaces of the previous row. Moss stitch is also known as Woven Stitch, Granite Stitch, and Linen Stitch in some patterns.

Once they are all done, it is time to sew the yoyo puff crown and the brim together to form this beautiful cute hat. Get all the details in the free pattern section.

Decorate the Yo-Yo Puff Wide Brim Crochet Hat by pinning a brooch or corsage at the brim area and you are all done. We made this flower corsage by using some lace and fabric strips and a wooden button, click the link to get the how-to tutorial.

If you are an advanced-level crocheter, you can always modify this beautiful Wide Brim crochet hat pattern and make a bigger size of women’s hat, like adding another yarn-over for the yo-yo puff to make it bigger, then increasing the stitches on the brim accordingly. You can even replace the yoyo-puffs with other patterns which are in similar shapes and sizes.

Let’s see how many Ravelers are making this crochet hat.

Happy Crochet!!!
