Difficulties Level
This Crochet Smiley Face Pattern is a beginner-friendly project as it uses only some basic crochet stitches. The basic stitches are chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet. We have a beginner guide for crochet on all these basic stitches. Feel free to jump over for some quick refreshments.
Crochet Craft Supplies
Crochet these smiley face needs only very little crochet craft supplies. The primary materials and tools are some yarn, a crochet hook, a tapestry needle, and a pair of scissors.
The Smiley Face, a yellow emoji with a smiling face, has been popular since 1950. Thus, we need some yellow yarns as the primary color to make the circle shape of the smiley. Next, we need some black yarn to sew the smiling expression. Lastly, we need yarn to extend the shape of the round smiley face into a granny square. We use beige color for the square; however, feel free to incorporate your choice of color.
Variations & Options
In this crochet pattern, we write 2 options for the granny square size: the standard and the modified sizes. Knowing the number of stitches on each side is crucial unless you are making the smiley face granny square as a single-piece project (no joining with other squares).
Why is it important to get the number of stitches right in a granny square? There are many variations in the granny square crochet pattern (click the link to get more free patterns), so it is important to find a matching stitch count pattern to join with. Explore more on different methods of joining the granny squares.
Other than the size, you will find another option, whether to have an outline or without an outline of the smiley face in the granny square.
How To Crochet Smiley Face Granny Square
1. Circle Yellow Piece
The crochet begins by making a flat circle piece with 3 rounds of double crochet (dc) stitches in yellow color. Get the detailed written pattern in the pattern section.
You may end the crochet here if your intention is only to make a circle smiley piece; proceed to the 3rd step to sew the smiling expression. Or, you may proceed to the next step by extending the round shape into a granny square.
2. Add Granny Square Border
With your preferred yarn color that is not yellow, sl knot and inserts the hook to the first st of the round and crochet with the following option of your choice:
- Smiley face with or without an outline, and
- The size of your final granny square.
Again, all these details are covered in the pattern section, so go ahead and read on. Upon finishing the crochet, hide all yarn ends by weaving them into the stitches. Block the granny square if needed.
3. Sew Smiley Face
In the final part of making this crochet smiley face, we need to sew the expression using black yarn and a tapestry needle. You may follow how we sew the smiley face or be a little different by sewing the smiley face with x eyes.
I hope you have a wonderful time crocheting this smiley granny square.

How Sew Smiley Face
- With black yarn and a tapestry needle, sew the smile between round 2 and round 3. First, make a small horizontal stitch at stitch 1 of the round, then sew running stitches following the circle to the opposite corner, mirroring the position to judge where to end the stitch. Make another horizontal stitch on this end.
- Sew the eye about 2 stitches above the smile, then go back to sew the smile and fill the gap with running stitches.
- Lastly, complete the smiley face by sewing the eye.
