Crochet Elephant Amigurumi Pattern

Posted on Last updated: /

Elwis & Elyra, the Crochet Elephant Amigurumi is one of the popular amigurumi patterns in the Craft Passion Animal & Wildlife design collection. In this collection, most of the crochet animals are designed to a size of at least 10″ tall, it is a great pattern to crochet as cuddling stuffed animals. They may take a little more time and skill to make, but it is definitely worth the effort when you see the final soft toys.

crochet elephant pattern

They were made from the same free crochet elephant pattern; a little manipulation gives these two tuskers a different character. For instance, Elwis’s trunk is pointing upward, and with a mouth under the trunk, it gives a cheerful appearance to the elephant amigurumi. Contrarily, the trunk down and the dress relate to a more refined and girlie character of Elyra. The diaper pants on Elwis are removable, but the dress on Elyra is permanent. The little tusks on Elwis also gave him a semblance of being a male elephant.

Materials & Supplies

• Yarns & Crochet Hooks

The crochet elephant is about 12″ tall in standing pose and about 9″ tall when it is sitting down. They are crocheted from DK light worsted weight acrylic yarn by using a 2.5 mm crochet hook. This large crochet elephant pattern is superb for making it into a huggable elephant softie. It is also a great gift for someone who loves cuddling stuffed animals.

If size matters to you, you can resize the crochet elephant by using a different yarn weight, e.g., a bigger size by using heavier yarn and a bigger hook, DK medium yarn with a 3.0 mm crochet hook, or a smaller size by using lighter baby yarn with 2.0mm. I have seen a huge Elwis on Instagram with a baby girl, she just doesn’t want to let go of her crochet elephant.

In addition, crochet tension will determine the size a little. My tension is quite snug; thus, my Elwis might be slightly smaller than your Elwis, even with the same yarn and hook size.

• Eyes

We used a pair of 10 mm black domed buttons as eyes for the amigurumi elephant pattern. This is for the reason that we are able to sew and sunken the eyes of the amigurumi elephant. If you are making this crochet elephant for a baby, please replace the buttoned eyes with a pair of safety eyes.

• Others

Other supplies you will need to prepare before starting to make this crochet elephant are: Polyester fiberfill for stuffing, a stitch marker to mark the first stitch at the beginning of the round, a tapestry needle to sew the crochet parts together, a marker to mark the position, and pins to temporary hold the part in place during sewing, finally a pair of scissors to cut the yarn. Prepare 2 small buttons for removable diaper pants.

Crochet Elephant In Action!

It’s a bright sunny day; in a quiet park, there comes the elephant amigurumi enjoying some sunbeams when human beings have to stay at home. In the current situation (Covid pandemic), human beings are safe at home, which makes animals safe in the wild. Thus, Elwis and Elyra, designed and made in Craft Passion’s studio are able to play in the open ground without any fear.

crochet elephant amigurumi

Elwis is a cheerful baby elephant that’s wearing blue stripe diaper pants. With his jolly personality, he just can’t stop roaming every corner of the park. His chatty character has won a lot of friends because everyone likes him; he is such a pleasant and amusing elephant. He will grow up to be a public speaker and probably a famous one.

crochet elephant doll

Elyra, on the other hand, is a shy and quiet girl that just follows where Elwis brings her. On this day, Elyra puts on her favorite rainbow-ruffles dress to the park with Elwis. Though she is as excited as Elwis to be able to roam around the park freely, she prefers to keep all her feelings to herself.

After completing this pair of cuties, I have an idea to crochet baby blankets to match them up, perhaps some cute elephant loveys too.

Happy crochet and enjoy every stitch you are making with this free elephant crochet pattern. Try out the adorable elephant in different colors, perhaps in shades of pink crochet elephants. Though your elephant might not look exactly like them, they still carry the DNA of the Elephant Amigurumi, Elwis & Elyra.

Crochet Elephant Amigurumi Pattern

Elwis is crochet from Grey Yarn and Elyra is crochet from Cyan Yarn. Both Elephants are crochet from the same pattern, while Elwis's trunk is pointing upward and Elyra's trunk is pointing downward. However, the major differences between them are 1. Elyra doesn't have tusks and mouth, also, 2. Elyra is wearing a dress. The dress is done by crochet part of the body with the dress yarn, then adding ruffle pieces to the bottom and top of the body 3. Elwis is wearing removable diaper pants.

More details on How to Crochet Elephant Amigurumi

elephant amigurumi

Sew 2 black buttons as eyes at round 38, at the center of each side of the head; roughly 27 stitches apart.

Do not cut the yarn after sewing the first eye; instead, insert it into the head and come out from the second eye to sew another eye.

Pull the yarn a little to sink the eyes into the head, and knot securely. You can run the yarn through the head a few times to prevent the yarn from snapping in the long run.

elephant amigurumi

If you turn the head the other way round, it is the trunk down expression.

Elwis is with the trunk pointing upward, Elyra is with the trunk pointing downward.

elephant amigurumi

If you are making Elwis with the trunk-up position, sew the mouth between round 33 to 36.

elephant amigurumi

Another view after the mouth is sewn.

Followed by sewing the tusks between round 32 to 34, 7 stitches apart at the sides of the mouth.

elephant amigurumi

Sew the ears and body to the head followed by sewing arms (between head and body), feet (on round 14), and tail (on round 16) to the body to complete the elephant amigurumi.

Notes

Depending on the speed and hours you are spending on the project, the total time needed is only an approximation.

Stuff the parts firmly and densely to give a good shape to amigurumi doll.

The ears are attached somewhere at 22 to 23 rounds away from the eyes, and about 2 to 5 stitches above the eyes. You may refer to the following picture for reference to eye balling the position.

@Craft Passion thank you for your reply.

I'm trying to do the start of the body and I seem to be one out each time, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I've tried about 6 times still getting same problem. I assume pattern is correct?

Many thanks

A ball of 100 grams should be sufficient, but depending on the yarn weight, some might use more than 100 grams. To be on the safe side, spare 2 balls of 100 grams, if the yarn shop is far from your home or the shipping time, is long.

Hi. Thanks so much for the pattern! This is my first amigurumi and I am having difficulty with the trunk. When complete the rounds the first stitch is spiraling so that my sl sts are also spiraling instead of lining up to make the trunk curve. Wgat am I doing wrong? I have tried to just crochet continuously and also stepped but getting thr same result

In this crochet pattern, it is normal that the first stitch is spiraling, but the slst FLO should be lined up nicely. Do you mind to send us your photo via the contact form so that I can have a closer look?
