Giraffe Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Posted on Last updated:

After witnessing Elwis and Elyra Elephant Amigurumi make their first fun adventure to the park, Gem & Guy Giraffe Amigurumi attempted their first step out as well. Both the Giraffe Amigurumi chose to venture into a deserted paddy field on a bright sunny day.

giraffe amigurumi

The paddy field was left alone after being harvested by the farmer, rice straws were being rolled into bales and left to dry on the field. With the rice straw bales on the empty paddy field, the Giraffe Amigurumi had so much fun playing hide and seek. The soft cushioning field is so spongy and comfortable for them to rest on. They can even take a nap on the field with no human intervention.

The Giraffe Amigurumi is about 17″ tall in standing pose and about 14″ tall when it is sitting down, crochet from DK lightweight acrylic yarn by using 2.5mm hook. It is a great size as a huggable softie, hence, it is absolutely lovely to make as a gift for someone who loves cuddling stuffed animals.

crochet giraffe amigurumi

Wish your Giraffe amigurumi was a little larger? Simply alter the materials a little e.g create a bigger giraffe by using heavier yarn like the DK medium yarn with 3.0mm hook, or shrink down the size by using lighter baby yarn with a 2.0mm hook. Don’t forget that crochet tension affects the size too; my tension is pretty snug, so my Gem might be a little smaller than yours, even if we’re using the same yarn and hook size.

As for the yarn, I used acrylic yarn from Lion Brand, Vanna’s Choice in DK weight. The color are Honey, Lemon, Beige & Chocolate (for Gem), or, Honey, Beige & Chocolate (for Guy).

Gem & Guy, the Giraffe Amigurumi are part of Craft Passion Animal & Wildlife design collectionIn this collection, all the animals are designed to a size of at least 10″ tall, just the ideal crochet size as cuddly stuffed animals. Maybe they take a little more time and skill to make, but for that final moment when you can cuddle them, definitely worth all the effort.

amigurumi giraffe

To be frank, this crochet pattern is meant for advanced amigurumi crocheters because the pattern is more complicated. It involves alternating in yarn color to create the spot markings of the giraffe. The sequence of the color is written in a separate row after each round of the stitch’s instructions in the pattern.

A beginner might find it tough, an Intermediate will find it challenging but still do-able if one studies it through. If you cannot get through creating the marking, perhaps you may consider making the body with a single color and add felt pieces to create the marking.

Remember, nothing can stop you if you are determined enough. Just crochet and be happy!

How to assembly the Giraffe Amigurumi

giraffe amigurumi

Sew the ears to the head, about 10 rows from the center of the eye. Both ears are 23 stitches apart, measured from the ears' midlines.

giraffe amigurumi

Sew the Ossicones between the ears, they are about 11 stitches apart, measured from the ossicones' midlines..

giraffe head

45° angle view of the head after the ears and ossicones are sewed on.

giraffe amigurumi

Giraffe Amigurumi is ready for a final assembly after all parts are crochet and stuffed.

giraffe amigurumi

Mark the joining position between the head and the body.

For the head, mark a circle about the same size as the tip of the body. Mark the midlines as well so the head can be position facing the same direction as the body.

For the body, move the circle marking (same size of the one marked on the head) to the front a bit. The purpose is to make the head tilt to the front a little and look more relax and natural. Mark the midline of the body on the circle.

giraffe amigurumi

Match the midlines and circles, pin the head to the body, Sew to join the head to the body.

giraffe amigurumi

Followed by the arms and legs.

The arms are sewed 2 inches below the head. They are sewed on both sides of the body but facing a bit to the front, making them about 8 stitches apart. Extend the sewing 3 rows down from the top of the arms to give a better join to the arms onto the body.

The legs are sewed at Round 15, on both sides of the body.

giraffe amigurumi

The giraffe should be able to sit comfortably without any obstacle from the legs.

giraffe amigurumi

Sew the Mane and Tail to the back of Giraffe to complete the project.

giraffe mane

Pin the mane to the head, between the ossicones and sew each side of the mane, from the bottom to the top of the head, and back to the bottom.

giraffe back

The tail is sewed at Round 20 at the back of the body.

Sew the ears and body to the head followed by sewing arms (between head and body), feet (on round 14), and tail (on round 16) to the body to complete the elephant amigurumi.

HAPPY CROCHET

Notes

Depending on the speed and hours you are spending on the project, the total time needed is only an approximation.

Stuff the parts firmly and densely to give a good shape to the amigurumi doll.

Is there a video tutorial on this pattern anywhere?

LINDA

Friday 18th of November 2022

I am always told I am a beginner and maybe so afer not doing any crochet for 40 years but at 60 and self taught with first blanket I made was shells and multi-colored and even with the now newer things like new way of color changes or for AMI'S and DOLLS I think I can do this. I am very stubborn and do not give up. Thank you so much for all the work you put into your patterns to help me be able to follow them! I also use the comments to help too. Just so you know though your designs can be a short time or years we thank you so much for all you do and keeping them here for us <3

Blessings to you and years <3

I’m currently on the body where you make the spots.. but I cant grasp it, mine looks all in bits and not large spots as every other round is saying sc 25 … etc in then increase then sc … with no brackets for the lemon. So it’s random lines through it. Can anyone help me?

Craft Passion

Friday 29th of April 2022

Hi Charley, The colorwork starts at round 10, at the instruction below each round, there is an instruction for the color of the respective round. There is where you change color after performing a certain stitch count.

For example: For round 10: it says sc 25, Inc, sc 27, Inc, sc 2. Color at R10: 2 (5) 1 (11) 4 (4) 3 (3) 2 (5) 3 (8) 1 (6)

This means, sc 2 in honey, change to lemon to sc 5, then change to honey to sc 1, then lemon again to sc 11, then honey to sc 4. You have made 23 sc stitch till now, change yarn to lemon to sc 2 and inc (this is a total of 4 stitches, highlighted in the bold 4), followed by honey to sc 3, lemon to sc 3 and so on until you finish the round. I hope this explanation helps.
