Here it is, my daughter’s bedroom design, as promised in my New Home design blogpost.
The main highlight of my daughter’s room design includes the big tree wall decal with shelves, the flying butterflies on the wall, the picture frames above the bed’s headboard and the empty space that connect her bed to the study table, etc…. oh, not forgetting the “Secret Garden” quilt blanket I designed and sewed for her few months ago. I hope to cover all this in this post.
Early this year, during the hunt on the design inspirations for my new home, I stumbled upon one of the Pinterest’s pins of this adorable tree wall decal that allows some shelves to be installed on the tree branches. I fell in love at first sight and decided to search the source of buying one for my daughter’s room. I did a quick image search on Google and that’s how I have found Simple Shapes. Weeks later, the shelving tree wall decal arrived, I was so enthusiastic and wanting it to be up at no time. My daughter’s room wasn’t ready for another few more weeks. I did it after the room is ready, and I did it all by myself.
Girl’s Bedroom Decoration Ideas
First of all, you must decide what wall color you want for the room, get a contrasting color for the wall decal. Usually, the choice would be a darker wall color with a white decal.
For my case, I like a dull orange color that matches the Secret Garden quilt I have sewn, so I used ICI Dulux’s San Remo (17125). [Remark: color may appear slightly different from the picture]
Wipe the wall clean and free from oil and dust just before the decal installation.
The decal comes in pieces, cut them out according to the instruction.
You can watch the video that Simple Shapes created on youtube, how to install a wall decal.
After you have had them all put up (including the treehouse and birds), install the optional shelving on the branches (up to 3), a maximum width of 24″.
I bought some ready cut paper reverie butterflies from Making Memories, in 3 color themes: Sienne, Brun Antique, and Metallique. The butterflies come in 3 sizes and in each pack there are 60 pcs. of them but I didn’t use all of them.
I think Making Memories has discontinued this product, so it is a good time to grab whatever is in the clearance sale. If you can’t find it then please purchase from an alternative source or punch your own butterflies.
Fold the butterfly along the centerline, attach a small thick double-sided tape on the back and stick it off the wall. Make a flying pathway by placing more butterflies at the bottom of the wall and slowly reducing the number and narrow down the width as you move upwards.
Besides the butterflies, place some flower photos above the bed’s headboard with Ikea’s photo frames. I bought the flower postcard from Ikea too. Another great idea to substitute the flower postcard would be making some fabric applique flowers from the quilt design and frame it up.
We are living in a condominium and I have used up 2 small rooms as my sewing room and craft room. We need lots of storage spaces to keep all the belongings. This full height wardrobe plus bookcase is just nice for my daughter to use. Half of it for her clothes and half of it for her books and so on.
The wardrobe has 2 windowpane doors, when we feel tired of the “see-thru” door, we could simply cover it up with door window curtains, a great future DIY plan 🙂
I also planned to either buy or make some baskets for her to slot between the shelves.
I place a rug in the space between the bed and the study table, with an upright standing Ikea’s MALA whiteboard / black chalkboard for her to write or draw on.
The Heart Chenille Valentine Pillow on the floor, I sewed it for last year’s valentine’s day. Perhaps a beanbag will be good for her to sit down and read.
The Austrian blind is a green color sheer layered with a roller blind behind to block away from the brightness of the sun.
I also added in my recent creation, the Nursery Owl Mobile, hang next to her bed (not shown in the picture).
The swivel chair is from Ikea, Jules in white color. I replaced the castors to suit the hardwood floor.
That’s all for her bedroom decorations, there are still plenty of DIY ideas for this room. I will do it one at a time and hope to update you as soon as I have done anything here.
