As mentioned in my previous post, I am going to share a series of animal amigurumi these few weeks. However, just before sharing my next animal amigurumi crochet pattern, I took the opportunity to post this mini sun hat for doll crochet pattern first.
This mini sun hat with a bow (and the tote behind) is the accessory I made for the next amigurumi doll. The tote/basket/bag will be shared in a separate post coming up next. In order not to miss any of the new patterns & tutorials, please stay tuned for the update from Craft Passion. This mini Sun Hat is about the size of 3.5″ diameter brim to brim and I crochet it with my stashed raffia yarn, a leftover over from my various raffia crochet patterns. It is a quick-to-complete crochet pattern that you can whip up a few hats in a day. Make it for your doll, or amigurumi toy, it is also perfect accessories for Barbie Doll (I am going to dig out my Barbie doll to show you in social media). Apart from making for dolls, it can be attached to a hook and make into bag charms and keychain too, great as a little gift to friends and colleagues.
As you already noticed that this mini sun hat has a horizontal “V” knit-like stitch, don’t get freak-out, it is, in fact, a variation of a single crochet stitch. This beautiful stitch is called “single crochet at the horizontal bar or the 3rd loop”. Read further to get the tutorial on how it is crochet.
I am in love with this stunning new stitch and I am thinking of crochet a real size tote with it, and, perhaps a sun hat too.
Look, who is the little pinkie at the back lurking for the sun hat and tote!!! She is my next amigurumi animal crochet pattern to be shared here.
Happy Crochet.

More Details on how to crochet the Mini Sun Hat
As the crochet pattern is calling for a variation of single crochet stitch: single crochet at a horizontal bar or 3rd loop (sc hb), here is the detail on how to crochet it.
This is the front side of the “sc hb” single crochet stitch variation.
This is the back.
If you compare it to normal single crochet, you may notice the difference as this variation has no horizontal bar (round 1 and 2) at the back of the crochet piece.
In a normal single crochet stitch, we insert our hook under the 2 loops (the V) on the top of the last round. However, for this horizontal bar variation, we insert the hook into the horizontal bar or the 3rd loop at the back of the crochet piece (as shown in the picture). By doing this, we push the 2 top loops to the front and that’s where the “knit-like-V” forms.
Another view of where to insert the hook.
It is just like how you do the single crochet stitch just that you are drawing yarn over from the horizontal bar or the 3rd loop at the back of the crochet piece.
When the pattern called for an increase, just make 2 single crochet stitches into the same horizontal bar.
If you have difficulty understanding this explanation, search “single crochet in 3rd loop” on Youtube for a video.
Attach the bow to the sun hat after you have completed them according to the crochet pattern above.
Perfect Match!
