I have been using the previous zipper card pouch for quite some time, and it is time for an uplift on the pattern and tutorial while sewing a new one for myself. Here is the improved version of how to sew this small zipper pouch for credit cards and discount cards.

What’s the Difference between the zipper pouches?
Compared to the previous zipper card pouch, a few upgrades are done on this small zipper pouch design. First, it can store more cards even if both their sizes remain the same, 4 1/2″ x 3 1/4″. The reason behind the bigger storage space is that I have hidden the bulky seam allowance inside the zipper card pouch. Second, it has better divider slots. There are 2 dividers, thus making up 3 parts in the pouch, which can give better organization to your cards. Third, there are improvements in the overall design of the zipper card pouch to make the zipper glides easily.
What Do You Need To Sew?
Get ready with some fabrics of your choice, we prefer to use canvas fabric which is heavier and thicker. It is suitable to sew for purses and pouches. However, if you do not have this weight, you can always fuse a layer of interfacing to make it thicker. The interfacing also acts as a stabilizer to the fabric and thus gives a better structure to the zipper pouch. If you are sewing the pouch for mean, choose a solid color fabric or denim to sew. It will turn into a great Father’s Day or birthday gift too.
Besides the main fabric for the pouch, you will need a lining fabric to be sewn as the internal layer of the card pouch. Other materials are some grosgrain ribbons and a zipper.
Since we are using a sewing machine to sew, prepare a normal presser foot and a zipper foot. Of course, some sewing kits and other essential tools like threads, needles and pins, a marker, a ruler, scissors, awl, and iron are needed here.
I find that this pouch is great as a small zip pouch wallet or coin purse. Slot in your credit card, identity card, and some small change to bring out for tea break. And with the current trend to seek smaller purses and bags, this small pouch is a perfect choice.
This zipper card pouch pattern and tutorial are easier to understand. In order to make the design and pattern flawless, you will need to hand sew a little.

SEW ZIPPER CARD POUCH SEWING PATTERN

Materials
- Fabric – Printed, approximately: 12″ x 10″
- Fabric – Red, approximately: 12″ x 4″
- Interfacing, fusible, medium thickness, approximately: 12″ x 6″
- Grosgrain ribbon – 2″
- Zipper – 6 1/2″ (click here to watch how to shorten metal zipper)
Tools
- Sewing machine, with normal foot and zipper foot
- Sewing kits
- Pencil or Erasable fabric marker
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Tools for turning like awl and knitting needle or bamboo turner
- Iron
Instructions
- Gather all the materials as listed above. Download and print out the sewing pattern of the zipper card pouch. Trace zipper card pouch template on fabrics and interfacing based on the quantity stated in the pattern. Seam allowance is already added to the template. Cut out the fabrics and interfacing piece.
- Trace the sewing lines to the wrong side of the fabric pieces.
- Align the interfacing pieces to the wrong side of the fabrics.
Press with a warm iron to fuse the interfacing to the fabrics.
- If you are using a metal zipper, shorten it with this tutorial. Mark 1/4″ away from the zipper ends, this is where the sewing ends on the zipper.
- Baste the zipper to the main printed fabric, with the zipper open, from marking to marking, and right side facing each other. Clip the zipper tape at the curve area so that the zipper is able to follow the curved sewing line.
- Guide the zipper tape towards the seam allowance at the end markings.
- Cover the pouch with the red lining fabric, right side facing down. Baste. Pin or baste both layers of fabric together.
- Sew with zipper presser foot around, leaving 2 1/2″ opening for turning right side out later. Clip corners and curve at the seam allowance.
- Turn right side out from the opening. Shape the corners with an awl to make a perfect right-angle corner.
- Repeat the same zipper process to the other side of the zipper tape. Add a ribbon loop to the printed main fabric, about 1/2″ from the top.
- Attach and sew the lining to this side of the zipper. Note that the whole first zipper side is captured inside between this print and a red lining. Pull out the first zipper side from the opening, then turn the second zipper side right-side out. Shape the corners.
- Sew to close the openings with a slip stitch. Press with a warm iron if needed.
- 1. Fold the divider & gusset piece into half, sew around, leaving a 2″ opening. Clip corners.
2. Turn it right-side-out, and shape corners. Sew to close the opening with a slip stitch.
3. Fold the divider & gusset piece into half again, sew near the folding edge, and make a few back stitches at the ends to lock the thread.
4. Unfold the piece, and you will get a sewn crease line created along the center of the gusset.
- The width of the divider & gusset piece is slightly narrower than the pouch body.
- Place the divider piece onto the body piece, 3/4″ from the top, with bulging side of the center creased line facing up. Align the divider slightly inside the edge of the body. Pin. Sew near the edges of the 3 sides of the body to attach the divider & gusset piece.
- The pouch body has a “pull” due to the narrower divider. This is to give a straight divider inside the pouch.
- Turn the pouch inside out, and slip stitch to Join 2 sides together.
- Note that the divider edges never touched each other.
- Turn the card pouch right-side out. Slip stitch again at the seam lines to close the gaps.
- A completed zipper card pouch with 2 dividers and an internal gusset.
- Inside view of the zipper card pouch. Note that the dividers are straight and neat.
- Load your cards into the zipper card pouch and start using it.
Notes
Seam Allowance: 3/8″ (included in the pattern template)
You may omit the interfacing if you are using canvas fabric.

Thanks so much for sharing this pattern. I made this today, to replace a small pouch wallet I had broken the zip on. Even with a bit of wonky sewing it’s a real upgrade - never knew what I was missing without a divider! I loved that you included all the dimensions too. I don’t have a printer, so I could easily draw up the patter by hand :)

You may want to consider rfid protective lining between the inner and outer fabric. Laminate aluminum foil with duct tape for a strong durable and flexible liner that is easy to integrate! :)

Hi there - thank you so much for sharing this pattern - I'm getting ready to sew it and I'm so excited. It's just what I need. My only question is that I have a 6" zipper that I'd like to use and I'm a little nervous about altering the pattern much - would you recommend just shaving a 1/4" from the straight edges of the pattern to accommodate the shorter zip? Do you think the final measurements would still work? Thanks!!

Hi Tess, sorry for the late reply. I would rather add a tab at the zipper end to lengthen the zipper instead of reduce the size for the pouch.
