Have you heard of the story of how Frosty the Snowman came alive?

Legend has it that when a bunch of children witnessed the first snowfall of the year, they decided to build a giant snowman. After a few moments of rolling different sizes of snowballs, they stacked them up, then dressed the Snowman with various objects from their home, only to realize something was still missing. Suddenly, an old top hat flew in their direction. They then placed it on the snowman without knowing it was a magic hat that brought Frosty to life!

What an enchanting story indeed ✨

If you look closely, you could see that apart from the classic carrot nose and buttons mouth you usually see on a snowman, I’ve put on some blusher at the cheeks area for my daughter’s mask to highlight a cuter appearance!

Similar to my other face mask sewing patterns, this Snowman face mask comes in 4 sizes; for small kids, young kids, women & teenagers, and men. For people with a larger face, you may enlarge the men’s pattern by 10% to 15% accordingly. Also, with the help of a nose wire, those with glasses don’t need to worry about your glasses fogging up anymore!

One thing to take note of is that this specific Covid face mask design is only 2 layers by default. Though, you can add another layer of lining piece as the inner layer to make it into a 3 layered mask.

Tips: You can use non-woven material as the inner layer for better filtration, or you may use the same cotton material which is equally as good.

Since the mask is designed with a 3D concept, it ensures that it’s breathable and comfortable while aiding to stop the spread of viruses. The idea is that, even after the pandemic is over, you may sew the pattern as a flu mask, a winter face mask, or simply as a protective accessory by adding a pompom as the nose (for Reindeer) or fur fabric for the mustache and beard (For Santa).

PREPARATION

snowman face mask patternPrewashed all your fabrics and make sure the brown and red fabric are color-fast.

Download the 4 sizes Snowman Face Mask templates PDF file, choose the size you want to sew and print them out on heavy paper or card. It requires 2 pcs. of paper for each size. Make sure you disable all the printing scale of the printer setting, or, print it to the "actual" size setting. Measure the 2" scale that's available on the template after you have printed it out and make sure you are getting a 2" measurement on the ruler too, that means you have printed the template in the correct size. If you didn't get the correct size, check your printer setting again, and also make sure you are not printing it from the browser (the browser setting will overwrite your printer setting).

Cut out the paper templates. Solid lines are templates with seam allowances. Dashed lines are stitching lines. Arrows are the direction of fabric grainlines.

Notes: Not all the fabrics shown in the pictures are used in sewing the Snowman Face Mask.

snowman face maskTrace and cut out the fabric pieces.

The bigger pieces of white fabric are for the front pieces.

The smaller pieces of white fabric are for the lining pieces.

The orange fabric is for the lining piece.

The red fabric is for the nose.

SEW FRONT PIECE (REINDEER DESIGN)

Front Piece

snowman face maskPlace the front pieces right side together, sew the center seam then clip the seam allowance with pinking shear or scissors.

snowman face maskPress seam to the side, then, topstitch near the seam line (on the seam allowance side) from the right side.

Set aside.

Nose Piece

snowman face maskTrace the Nose outline on the wrong side of a piece of white fabric. Stack it on another piece of orange fabric with the right side together. Sew around. Clip the seam allowance with pinking shear or scissors.

Carefully slip a horizontal opening at the center of a layer of the Nose piece.

snowman face maskTurn Nose piece right side out from the opening. I like to use a pair of blunt-point tweezers to do the job, it helps to push the seam edges out too. Press.

Sew to close the opening.

snowman face maskRefer to the template, mark the position of the nose on the front piece.

Place the orange nose on the front piece then slip stitch them together along the edge. You may stuff the nose with some batting or poly filling to make it looks round and fuller.

snowman face maskDraw the carrot folds on the nose piece. Also, mark the positions of the 6 black dots of the Snowman mouth.

With 3 strands of brown embroidery floss, embroider the carrot mimic fold lines with stem stitches.

snowman face maskSew to attach buttons for easy and quick option.

If you opt for the black fabric method, trace and cut out the 6 pieces of mouthpieces from the fabric, sew around the edge with running stitches.

Place the mouth paper templates (without seam allowance) on the wrong side of the fabric, pull the thread to draw the edge of the fabric to the center, pull tight, and knot the thread. Press. Pinch to take out the template of the nose piece.

Place the black mouthpieces on the designated positions then slip stitch them together along the edge.

snowman face mask This is how the front piece looks like after decorating it with Snowman features.

SEW LINING PIECE

snowman face maskPlace the lining pieces right side together, sew the center seam then clip the seam allowance with pinking shear or scissors.

snowman face maskPress seam to the side, then, topstitch near the seam line (on the seam allowance side) from the right side.

Note: If you need to make a 3-layered Snowman Face Mask, prepare 2 pieces of lining instead of 1 piece.

ADD SLEEVE FOR NOSE WIRE (OPTIONAL)

snowman face maskCut a bias strip of 2” wide and 6” long or use store-bought bias tape if you can find it from the shelf.

Fold ¼” from the 2” ends.

How to cut bias strip:

Fold the fabric diagonally, draw a line along the crease of the fold, measure 2” from the line and draw a line parallel to it. Cut the strip into 6” length.

snowman face maskFold the strip into half, lengthwise.

Stitch up both ends.

snowman face maskAlign the bias tape along the front top edge of the lining.

snowman face maskTopstitch at the bottom edge of the bias tape.

Do not remove the pins until you pin the main piece to this lining piece.

SEW LINING TO THE SNOWMAN FACE MASK

snowman face maskWith the right side together, align the center seam lines and pin the lining to the front piece. Sew the top and bottom edges with 1/4" seam allowance.

Clip the seam allowance by making small little cuts about 1/2" apart for the top edge. Clip about 4 cuts at the bottom near the center seam.

how to sew snowman face maskTurn the Snowman Face Mask right side out. Press seam to give a crisp and neat edge.

snowman face maskThis is the inside of the Snowman Face Mask.

snowman covid face maskTopstitch near the top and bottom edges.

FASTENER TUNNEL

snowman face mask At the side, fold 1/4″ from the edge. Then, fold again so that the first fold is 1/4″ from the raw edge of the lining.

snowman face maskSew a straight line down, don’t forget to perform a few back stitches to lock the thread end. Add your label if you have one.

Thread your elastic earloop or head ties through the channel. Knot the ends of the elastic cord and pull it into the channel to hide.

Notes

When you press the seam to the side, make sure all pieces are pressed to the same side. This will prevent fabric bulk when you layer the pieces together.
