It was almost dawn and the sun hasn’t yet to show any trace of ray while I was driving to the Penang International Airport. I took an early flight down to the capital, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday as I was invited as the Special Guest Crafter to the Spotlight IPC Store Media Preview event (IPC is Ikano Power Centre).
In conjunction with the National Craft Month, along with my utterly talented amigurumi contributor Mei Li from AmiguruMei and Sam from StuffAndMoreCrafts, I was one of the 3 invited guest crafters to teach simple craft making during the “Make & Take Craft Session”.
We made lots of pom-pom Elmos, cookie monsters, we even have the Angry Birds and some mutated monsters!!! Here is the archived tutorial for the Pom-pom Elmo and Cookie Monster I did a few years ago, just in case you want to try it out as well.
I am a big fan of Spotlight Store, it is a great honored to be invited, YES YES YES!!! I used to go to Spotlight Singapore to shop before Spotlight opened their first store in Malaysia at Ampang Point last July. Lugging a big suitcase of craft materials across the border was kind of tiring but it never stops me from going back again to buy.
Now, we are lucky that Spotlight, the largest Australian Retail Chain Superstore, finally landed in Malaysia last year and set their plan to open not only 1 store, but 6 stores altogether, including Penang and Johor…
YES, BIGGER YES for me, and I am hoping they will come to Penang very soon so that I can save up the traveling expenses and turn them into a shopping fund.
Spotlight Store In IPC Shopping Centre
[The grand opening is on March 14, 2015, be sure to be there for the grand opening sale which will be going on until March 24th]
Following the successful opening of its first store in Ampang Point last July, the second store is set to open on March 14, occupy a glorious 2000 square meters of retail space in IPC Shopping Center (refer to the floor plan below).
The store will house over 70,000 vast selections of heavenly delights in 6 categories, ranging from Home Furnishings, Bedding, Home Decor, Dress and Fashion Fabrics, right down to Craft, Hobby, and Party essentials, all at attractive prices.
Now everyone doesn’t have to search high and low, running in and out from one store to another to shop for those 6 categories of yummy stuff.
I managed to have a quick tour around this new store just before my “Make and Take” session begins. Here is the entrance (also the exit) of Spotlight ( Spotted Mr. Jono Gelfand, the man with a white top, he is the General Manager of Spotlight, standing there while I took this picture, haha).
The tour begins with the beautiful Home furnishing department: bed linen, bath, cushions, rugs, decoration, curtains, blinds. I love the blue, green and grey chevron towels on the rack (left), I must buy them on my next visit!!!
Spotlight offers highly sought-after brands like Brampton House, Logan & Mason, KOO, Fackelmann, Living Space, MIXE, Wiltshire etc… Need an instant home makeover? Shop at Spotlight!
Followed by the Oh-I-Want fabrics department. They have almost all the fabric categories you will need, from Furnishing fabrics, Dress Making Fabrics to Quilting fabrics.
Spotlight offers a huge variety of fabric to select, upholstery, lace, burlap, vinyl, pile, organza, faux fur, knitted, faux leather, denim, flannel, chenille, satin, gingham, cotton, etc. I could spend a whole afternoon choosing and send the bolts to the service table to cut in length.
Besides the fabrics, you will find the essential accessories and nobles needed for sewing. Zippers, threads, needles & pins, woven tapes, ribbons, buttons to all the tools, sewing machines, overlock machines. There are cabinets of sewing patterns available in the store too, McCall, Simplicity, etc…
The next exciting department is hobby and craft supplies. Needless to say, more, watch it with your own eyes. The following are only parts of the aisle I managed to take pictures from, there are more than this.
If I have the time, I would have strolled along the aisle after aisle looking at the colorful yarns Spotlight offers. They are simply inspiring as I have begun to imagine what I can do with some of them.
Before I managed to finish exploring the store, the event has already started. There are still a few departments left behind, Party Supplies, Storage, Kitchen, Dining, etc… I will come back soon for more!!!
Mr, Jono Gelfand, the General Manager Marketing of Spotlight welcomes all the media friends to the event with exciting news about their future plan in Malaysia. Follow closely after this opening, Spotlight will have the 3rd store opens at The Mines on 11 April 2015. We were then introduced to the media guests to be their “Make and Take” tutor for the craft session.
With the pace of the expansion, I am looking forward to the announcement for the up-coming stores in near future.
Right after the welcome note of Mr.Jono, he brought the media guests to tour around the store, while the 3 of us guest crafters quickly go to our stations and get ready for the “make and take craft session”. Here is my craft station, loaded with the materials and tools to make Pom-Pom Elmo.
Mei Li from AmiguruMei is in charge of needle felting and Sam is in charge of Card making and rubber stamp making.
These are the business cards I did using Brother’s ScanNCut machine. I have a Chinese New Year decoration paper crafts that use this machine to make. Feel free to download the cutting file from the tutorial if you are interested. By the way, if you would like to buy a ScanNCut Machine, Spotlight has it.
That’s me teaching the guest how to make the pom-pom by using the pom-pom maker sold in Spotlight. It was a fun session I had by guiding each of the guests from winding the yarn on the pom-pom maker till the finished pom-pom Elmo and Cookie Monster.
The crowd is great and we have walk-in customers and Spotlight’s staff to join in the fun too. The guests are super creative to come out with another version of pom-pom characters, including the Angry Bird and some mutated monsters as well.
It was a Fun event and I hope to have more in the future!
