Every March is National Craft Month, be extra crafty for the rest of the days until the end of the month to celebrate the month specially meant for us. Here is the Happy Family Elephant Stuffed Animal Sewing Pattern from Craft Passion, hope to see you sewing them too.

I am hoping to share more different crafts so you will have more choices to select from. I am working all the best I can, juggling the time between a day business that has nothing to do with crafts and 2 kids running around at home, also a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland.

As you may have noticed, I love to sew toys and dolls for my kids. Seeing them hugging the toys lovingly is all I want as a return of my late-night crafting. This time is a set of 4 elephant stuffed animals, I called them “The Happy Elephant Family”, which resemble the size of my family, Dad-Mom-Daughter-Son.

Looking at the wildlife photo of the elephant colony inspired me to come out with this pattern. I was brought up in an accustomed way like many of you, Father is always the leader and Mother is always the care provider. I hope my kids will follow us until they are big enough to set up their own family and this is how the family branches out.

Today is also my dad’s 70th birthday. My dad is a traditional Chinese man, he is the man who spends his whole life working so hard to bring 4 of us up in the best way he can afford to do. The man who spends all his hard-earned money building a good family foundation, but also the one who has forgotten to plan for himself, his retirement, and his medical bill. The man still working his best for us, including repairing our house plumbing and electrical appliances, building us furniture & fish pond, plant & harvest our favorite fruits. Happy Birthday, Daddy! You are always our hero, and we will always love you.

HOW TO SEW HAPPY ELEPHANT STUFFED TOY

  1. Download the Happy Elephant Family Sewing Pattern pdf document and print it out with your printer in letter size papers (3 pages).
Get ready all the tools and materials.
I am using Robert Kaufman’s “Chick-a-dee Chick-a-doo” 9 fat quarter bundle, just in case, you would like to know.elephant stuffed animal
  2. Trace pattern on the wrong side of the fabrics with a pencil or erasable fabric marker.
Cut them out with 1/4″ seam allowance or larger.elephant stuffed animal
  3. Sew ears with the wrong side facing each other; a piece of stripe fabric matches with a piece of plain orange fabric.
Optional: trim 1/4″ seam allowance from the sewing line to neaten the raw edges.
You can either cut the seam allowance with pinking shear or, with scissors then clip the curve accordingly to provide smooth curvature.
Turn right-side out and smooth out the seam.
Fold the 2 sides of the ears inward to match the width of the ear markings on the body. Pin or make a few stitches to secure the fold.sew elephant ear
  4. Sandwich the ear with the 2-part body pattern. Align the ear within the ear markings on the body. Sew.
Press seam to side and make the ear pointing to the tail side of the elephant.elephant stuffed animal
  5. Align the paper pattern on the right side of the elephant, trace the facial feature on it with an erasable fabric marker.
Embroidery the lines with back stitches or branch stitches.
An easy way to do the tracing is by slitting the lines on the paper pattern with a sharp object, craft knife, or pen tip, to create “holes” for the fabric pen to go through and mark on the fabric according to the line.embroidery facial features
  6. Embellish the nose with a heart-shaped felt if you wish.elephant stuffed animal
  7. Fold the ribbon in half and sew to the tail marking.elephant stuffed animal
  8. Repeat the other side except attaching the ribbon to the tail.
Place both layers with the right side together, align, pin and sew from A to B marking.
Remember to leave an opening for turning right side out in the later stage.sew body
  9. Align base piece to the limbs of the elephant, sew around.
Trim seam allowance to 1/4″ wide with pinking shear or scissors. Clip curve and pay particular attention to the concave curves.elephant stuffed animal
  10. Turn the elephant right side out from the opening and smooth out the seam and curve.elephant stuffed animal
  11. Stuff the elephant with poly-fill. Begin with the trunk/nose then the whole body.elephant stuffed animal
  12. Stuff firmly. You may add silica gel beads or plastic beads to the bottom of the elephant to weigh it down.elephant stuffed animal
  13. Close the opening with the ladder or slip stitches.elephant stuffed animal
  14. Give the elephant doll a gentle massage to even out the filling and shape it accordingly.elephant toy

Sew a few more to build a happy family.
Done!

Notes

Seam Allowance: Please add 1/4″ seam allowance or larger to the pattern

Tip: always massage the stuffing to loosen out lumps. Long tubular parts should be rolled with both hands so any lumps will be smooth, and help to make the parts longer and firmer.
