WIP: Bareback Halter Knit Top

Posted on Last updated:

I am still working on my knitting project…. it has been more than 3 weeks since I started the first stitch. This is for my daughter, I promised to knit something for her birthday, but I didn’t make it in time for her big day 🙁 She celebrated her 6th birthday 2 weeks ago and this project was not even 1/2 completed then. Why? I changed my mind during the process.

how to knit

Initially, I planned to knit her a hat, a cute slouchy beanie with a flower attached to it (something like a mixture of all these). After knitting about 40 rows, the yarn material didn’t turn out right for my pattern. Cotton yarn may not be the right material to create the look I am looking for. I may have been wrong but I don’t want to take the chance to create something that doesn’t meet my standard and design in the end. So, I paused it and started to think of a new design, but still trying to salvage and continue from where I have knitted so far. A bareback halter neck top should be nice for my girl, she agreed and acknowledged that she won’t get the gift from her mum in time.

So, I continued my knitting expedition again while writing down the pattern as I went. Here I am, at about 2/3 progress as I write this post…

wip knitting

If you have the experience of getting yarn here in Penang/Malaysia (I am talking about the year 2009 and before), you will definitely agree on this – buying yarn here sucks… not much choice to choose from, the material and color, price is not easy on the pocket. I don’t blame the suppliers here, just that the demand here is not as great for them to bring in more choices.

I spent an hour in the shop and gawked between few shelves trying to pick the best for my daughter. I bought those yarns shown in the photos and think that cotton yarn suits the hot weather better than wool (I was wrong for my hat pattern but it sure is a right choice after I turned it to the top). She prefers pink, nope no pink on the shelf but only orange and dark purple, so I grabbed an orange, knowing her that she won’t reject orange.

If you read my post regularly, you will see a pattern of my handmade post. You will notice that I alternate from sewing to crochet to knitting etc… Well, I am a multitasker, I do a few handicrafts at once 🙂 When I am in the living room with kids where sewing is impossible, I will do crochet and knitting or other less “kid-hazardous” crafts. When they are all asleep, I will go to my craft room and continue with my sewing where all the needles and pins are located. My craft room is kid-prohibited, I never let them go in there alone 🙂

Hopefully, I will finish my daughters bareback halter top by this week as I am about 2/3 finished. Will post it up and share with you all. I am planning to write the pattern too. Let me know if you prefer in writing form or diagram form, OK?

Fay, you need lots of practice to get the right tension. Mine is only knit and purl, very simple pattern or should I say no pattern at all LOL.... Knitting is fun, just like crochet and sewing or anything related to transforming the material into something you can use or wear :))
