Be it a pair of boxer shorts or a pair of sport shorts… it is a perfect gift to celebrate father’s day for this summer!

I made this for my hubby. It is from a pattern I copied from his old favorite sport shorts with some modifications on the front pockets. The cutting is perfect, and comfortable to wear too. So, I duplicate it to make another pair for him… may be more in future. I might even made some for myself with my favorite fabric prints!

I should have put this up earlier, but I was stuck with the paper pattern!!! It is kind of out of my expectation that the time I spent to get the pattern done in actual printable size… I am glad I made it, so that I can share this pattern with you.

The size is for maximum hip size of 40″, if you need more, just enlarge it.

  7. Such a wonderful tutorial! I stumber upon your lovely site from facebook. :) You have a very inspiring space here. Have a lovely merry happy day and love to you!

  8. How difficult to do think it would be to add a fly to these? I have been looking for a good pattern to make my husband some underpants with.

  9. I just don’t get the whole Waist band thing! It’s too small, also do we need to cut two of those? How do you attach them? Can you please Exaplin…my project is stuck because of the confusion :(

    • The waistband paper pattern is meant to fold the fabric at the middle to have 2 layers before cut (see the dotted line on the right that say “fold”), the actual width is double the paper pattern. If you don’t have enough fabric length, you can join the fabric to achieve the length.
This step was mentioned in point 2 of the second process picture.
      Hope this help.

  10. great tutorial, thanks for sharing. I have added it to me ‘Christmas Gifts to Sew’ round up post, I just wanted to let you know.

  13. Thanks for sharing it! It looks great and I think I understood how to do it (I`m just a beginner concerning sewing). But I have a question, perhaps you could answer it? I need to make the pattern bigger (waist is 53″ and hip 62″) but I`m not sure how to do it. I tried to make another pattern bigger before but it went out wrong and nothing fit together :( Greetings, jesse

    • Hi, Jesse, I am not a professional seamstress so it is going to be hard for me to grade the size. I normally go by measurement (hip, waist, crotch, sit and thigh) and enlarge each portion based on my 20 over years of sewing experience.
My opinion for you is: do a search in the net with “pants pattern alternations” keyword, you should be able to find the right way to enlarge the size of the pants.
      Good luck :)

  14. Looks great! The latest Spoonflower design contest is for fishing-themed fabrics, and they suggested the fabrics might be good for boxer shorts, so I Googled for a pattern and found this — I’ll have to try it. My guy wears knit boxer-briefs but I could wear them as summer pajama bottoms. Thanks for the pattern and instructions.

  16. Hi! I was just wondering, the person I want to make these for has a waist size of 30″, is it possible that this pattern could be slightly too big for them?

  17. Thank u for sharing. ^-^

  18. Awesome! What a great idea for Christmas gifts to the boys or girls. =)

  22. The “Short Pants with free tutorial” was dead easy to make after you made the first one the rest are easy. I am going to give the Boxer shorts a go as my son said that the crotch seems a little short.

  23. i just finished these, they were to small for me :( but my little sister loves them! thanks so much.

  24. can you explain the different lines on your pattern? You mention sewing lines, but what would the dashed lines be then?
Sorry if im missing something obvious!

  27. I saw your shorts, I have them cut out, what type of elastic did u use.

  28. Nice pattern, will definitely be using for myself. But unisex???? I think NOT! These would look no better on a woman than body hair would look on her! These are most DEFINITELY FOR A MAN! Nasty thought – boxers? On a woman? YUCK!
