Tatting Lace

Have you ever been confronted with a limited choice of patterns when choosing lace from the shop? I do, and my sister does too. This is why she started learning and doing her own tatting lace. How about me? Why I didn’t do it myself? I wish I could do it now… ah… too many new crafts to try out with so little time I have. I hope to do it one day and share with you my joys and sorrows throughout the process.
We love tatting lace, unlike those mass production machined laces, tatting laces are made from very fine cotton threads which are softly lustrous to give them a very refined appearance. Those photos shown above are the tatting laces my sister did by following the books. Her works are so fine that I couldn’t find any flaws in them. It is not easy to tat from a series of knots and loops by using the tatting shuttles, the tension must be right in order to make a nice lace. One single mistake in the process, that’s it, no way to correct it but to redo it again from the start.Share with me if you have any tatting experience!!!!

I tried tatting a very long time ago and made a few flowers but that is as far as I got. I just don’t have the patience for such intricate work.
    Take care.

i just discovered your wonderful blog. tatting is one craft that has me in knots! does your sister teach tatting? i would like to learn it again. We were taught in school, but … i’m also in Penang.
    thanks.

    • Thanks for visiting :)
Sorry, my sister doesn’t teach tatting. This is her self thought crafts that she get to learn from books. May be you can get a tatting pattern book and start to refresh your memory about how to knot the knots again.
      Hope this help :)

  12. Hello! I just discovered your blog and I have to say it is the best I’ve ever come across! I love how well photographed everything is and the site looks very professional.
I just started tatting a few months ago, and I think I’m pretty darn good at it if I do say so myself. Maybe it’s a little weird since I’m still in my teens but gosh it’s fun! But it’s frustrating how limited the choices are! There are only so many ways loops and chains you can put together into a complex, elegant design. Maybe I’m just not that innovative. Your sister’s work is wonderful and so is yours! I’m in love with the turtle pincushion and I’m looking for the right fabrics for it now. Keep up the good work and thank you!

  13. Hey-

I am a tatter. My grandma taught me and I am always looking for new patterns and a place to buy thread….do you know of any good places on-line that sell tatting thread?
