crochet ruffle flower hair tie

If you have some stashed yarns piling up in your craft room, you may want to crochet this layered ruffle flower as a little gift to giveaway.

This is a quick and easy project that you can finish within an hour. You may use this crochet layered ruffle flower to make hair-tie, brooch, and other hair accessories, and even as embellishment for your purse, bag, cushion, lampshade, clothes, hat or on a gift wrapping, etc….

It happens that I have some extra yarns from a little sling bag project (pattern to follow soon) I made for my friend, so, I crochet this flower into hair-ties for my friend and her 3 daughters. The hair-ties will be nice on them as they all have long and beautiful hairs like their mom. I hope the girls won’t fight over the sling bag as I only managed to crochet one and use the rest of the yarn for the matching hair-ties.

There are 2 versions of ruffle flower in this pattern, a full blossom crochet ruffle flower and a beaded crochet ruffle flower. If you happened to a little short of yarn just before completing a full blossom ruffle flower, you can always reduce and adjust the number of stitches of the last round of the pattern.

Crochet Pattern

Difficulty Level: Beginner – must know how to crochet ch, sc, hdc, tr & slst.
Gauge/tension: Not important.
Size: Size varies, depending on the yarn used and crochet tension. The one in the photo is approximately 4″.

Materials & Tools:
1. Stash Yarns, about 10g -20g depends on the yarn weight. I used baby light-weight yarn.
2. Button
3. Crochet Hook, as recommended by yarn’s label. I used 4mm.
4. Scissors
5. Elastic hairband or other hair accessories you want to attach the flower to.
6. Tapestry needle, make sure needle eye (with yarn) can pass through the buttonhole.
7. Beads, 40 pcs. (only for beaded ruffle flower)
8. Quick-drying glue, like UHU (optional)

Abbreviations (USA):
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
st = stitch
slst = slip stitch
sl knot = slip knot
fo = fasten off

Crochet Pattern:
Full Blossom Ruffle Flower
Being with a sl knot
R1 – ch2, sc 8 on the second chain from hook, slst on the ch at the beginning of the round.
R2 – *ch2, hdc on next st, ch2, slst onto the same st, repeat * 8 times.
R3 – ch, *sc on next st of R1, ch2, repeat * 8 times, slst on the first ch of the round. Bring the 8 chain loops to the back of the work.
or you can do the sc and ch2 directly at the back of the work.
R4 – ch, sc on chain loop, ch2, dc3, ch2, sc on the same loop, repeat the same on the next loop until you have done all the 8 loops.
R5 – ch, *sc on next st of R3, ch 5, skip next R3 st, repeat * 4 times, slst to the first ch of the round. Bring all 4 chain loops to the back of the work. Or, you can do the sc and ch5 directly to the back of the work.
R6 – ch4, * ch, tr on the chain loop, ch3 slst on the top loop of the tr, ch, tr on the same loop, repeat * 12 times. Repeat 4 times to complete the 4 loops round, slst to the 4th ch at the beginning of the round.

Beaded Ruffle Flower
Insert beads to the yarn
Follow R1 – R5 above.
R6 – ch4, * ch, tr on the chain loop, ch with 1 bead and slst on the top loop of the tr, ch, tr on the same loop, repeat * 10 times. Repeat 4 times to complete the 4 loops round, slst to the 4th ch at the beginning of the round.
You may do more tr to get more ruffle look on the flower.

Assembly
Sew a button at the center, keep the yarn don’t cut it yet.
Sew elastic hairband or other accessories to the back, tighten, knot, cut and hide away the yarn end.
Add some quick-drying glue to secure the hairband if you wish.

Note:
1.You may do more tr at the last round to get more ruffle look on the flower. Or, reduce the number of tr in each loop just in case you are running out of yarn.
2. If you find that it is difficult to insert yarn through the hole of the bead, use a small dot of pva craft glue (or mod podge) on the end of the yarn, twist the end while the glue is drying to shape a pointy tip. Let it dry for a while as it will be harder later.

round 1R1 – ch2, sc 8 on the second chain from hook, slst on the ch at the beginning of the round.

round 2R2 – *ch2, hdc on next st, ch2, slst onto the same st, repeat * 8 times.

round 3R3 – ch, *sc on next st of R1, ch2, repeat * 8 times, slst on the first ch of the round.
Bring the 8 nos. of 2-ch-loop to the back of the work.
If you are able to make the 2-ch loop at the back of the work directly, skip the next 2 pictures and go straight to R4.

round 3This is the front side with loops now at the back.

round 3 backThis is how the back looks like after the loops are there.

round 4R4 – ch, sc on chain loop, ch2, dc3, ch2, sc on the same loop, repeat the same on the next loop until you have done all the 8 loops.
Since the chain loops are at the back of the work, you will need to flip the R2 petals a little to work on the loop.

round 4The look after completed R4, where you have 8 petals on both layers.

round 5R5 – ch, *sc on next st of R3, ch 5, skip next R3 st, repeat * 4 times, slst to the first ch of the round.
Bring all the 4 chain loops to the back of the work.
Again, if you are able to do the sc and ch5 directly to the back of the work, skip the next picture.

round 5The look after the loops are brought to the back.

round 6R6 – ch4, * ch, tr on the chain loop, ch3 slst on the top loop of the tr, ch, tr on the same loop, repeat * 12 times.
Repeat 4 times to complete the 4 loops round, slst to the 4th ch at the beginning of the round.
You may customize this round to add or reduce the numbers of ruffle.

Layered Ruffle FlowerThe look after completed the crochet work, fasten off the yarn and bring it to the center of the back.

crochet flower hair tieSew button at the center, keep the yarn don’t cut it yet.

attach elastic hairbandSew elastic hairband to the back, tighten, knot, cut and hide away the yarn end.
Add some quick-drying glue to secure the hairband if you wish.

This is another version of similar layered ruffle flower pattern, just add beads and reduce the numbers of ruffle at the last round of the crochet work (refer pattern above).

    I can’t figure out the final round 6 – I have tried it over and over, and can’t get it to look anything like in your photos 🙁 do you have a video by chance for that round?

      Oh, this must be frustrating for you. Please take a close-up photo of your shell to show me (via email [email protected]) or to compare with the step photos. Sorry, we do not produce any video for this pattern.

    Dear Joanne, I crocheted the first 5 rows and stuck on the last one. Could you please tell me, shouldn’t there be any sc to the base loops which are on the back (those one which we created in row 5). If I follow your pattern: *ch, tr on the chain loop, ch3 slst on the top loop of the tr, ch, tr on the same loop, repeat* and repeat it 12 times I get a veeeeery long line of loops and crochets but neither of them is connected to the base. This is because each consequent crochet is build on the previous one. Or I didn’t understand correctly your description? Could you please crarify this row?

      Hi Okszana,
      There are 2 types of loops in R6. Those highlighted in bold is the base loop. The one that is not highlighted is the loop on the top of the tr stitch. Hope I make this clear and answered your question. Please let me know should you have any question.
      R6 – ch4, * ch, tr on the chain loop, ch3 slst on the top loop of the tr, ch, tr on the same loop, repeat * 12 times.
      Repeat 4 times to complete the 4 loops round, slst to the 4th ch at the beginning of the round.

    Hi!
    I am an avid crocheter, and have many years experience with patterns. This is why I’m stumped as to why I cant figure this out!
    I am totally stuck on round 3. I know it says to sc in the stitch from round 1, but I really dont know where exactly to insert the hook. I’ve looked closely at the pictures, but it is blocked by the already finished chain 2 loops.
    I love this flower, and intend to embellish a vintage patterned hat with it.
    Any help would be so appreciated!

      Hi Dana,
      If you look at the second picture (the one after making round 2), you will see the stitch holes between round 1 and round 2, that is the hole where your hook should go it to crochet the round 3.
      Hope this help 🙂 Happy crochet!

    I have recently picked up knitting again after 15 years and needed some help to remember how to do some of the stitches in the pattern instructions. I found the best place to learn was on you tube and it’s free! Just plug in how to ….in the search bar and you will see a demonstration of any particular stitch, pattern, etc. Whenever I get stuck its a huge help! Also, if you plug in knitting abbreviations or terminology it will give you a website where you can print them.

    I was at Joann’s on Christmas Eve and saw advertisements for classes on crochet. There was a beginners class and ads for a couple of other classes that focused on specific projects such as afghans. If you dont have a Joann’s where you live, you might try the local craft store where ou live (not a Walmart) to see if any of the ladies that work there know how to crochet or where you might find refresher classes.
