Make A Beautiful Tissue Carnation For Mother’s Day

Tutorial How to Make tissue carnation

Well, I have to confess that I need to be more efficient when come to blog….. This photo was taken on the Mother’s Day, with my daughter holding the carnation she made…. 24 hours a day seems not enough for me, lol!!

She learned to make a tissue carnation from her teacher a day before Mother’s day. She came back home and showed me, she told me she is going to make some for her grandma and aunties for the next day’s gathering to celebrate the Mother’s Day. She demonstrated it with a white normal tissue paper, then painted the flower with multi-color water color. It looks colorful but a bit troublesome, so I suggested her to use the left-over colored tissue paper that was in our cabinet since her last birthday. She is so happy since this save her lots of time and the red color is perfectly pretty for the celebration.

“Mom, can I put this up in your blog? I want to share this with your readers…”…. “why not?” It is never too late to share beautiful things though it is already pass the 2nd Sunday of May, moreover, there are some countries who celebrates mother’s day later this year, or perhaps make it for other occasions. Well, if you miss it this year, please bookmark or add this page to favorites and you still can do it for next mother’s day :) …. So, she started to work on them….. and I started to take photo as she goes…

materials to make tissue flowerMaterials you need for 1 stalk of carnation, multiply the number of item 1,2 and 6 with the amount of flower you want to make:
1. Party tissue paper (red color) – 1 pc.
2. Floral wire, gauge 18or 20 – 1 pc.
3. Floral tape – 1 roll
4. Strong thread
5. Scissor
6. Green straw (for the leaves) or you can substitute with green color paper – 2 pcs
7. Pliers

cut tissueCut the tissue paper by the fold-lines. This gives you 4 pieces of 8″ x 8″ double layer party tissue.

instruction to make tissue flowerWad the tissue paper up in your hand tightly until they get really crumpled like mommy’s wrinkles.

Separate out all layers, so you will have 8 thin crumpled tissue papers.

Smooth out the tissue and pinch both edges a little as you gather to create small pleats.

Get all 8 pieces done, align them neatly with same width together as shown in the picture.

Grab the center and fold it into halve. Make a little twist will help it to hold in place.

Bend one of the end of the floral wire, hook it on the center of the crumpled tissue papers.

Use a pair of pliers to squeeze or wrench the hook to tighten the tissue papers. This will need a little help from adult as girl might not have the strength to do it.

Cut 2 short lengths of strong thread (about 10″ each), tie in 2 sections for the receptacle. Squeeze the receptacle area a little and tight it hard. Again, this might need help from adult. Leave the thread uncut.

wrap floral tape on flower stemWrap the receptacle and peduncle or stem with floral tape. Pull the floral tape as you wrap with adhesive side facing the flower..

Move down spirally as you wrap the floral wire with the thread in it, add in straw leaves or paper leaves as you move.

Instruction how to make real looking carnation flower from tissueFluff the flower and make it blooms like real carnation. DONE!!!
So, easy, even my 7 year-old girl can do it with a little help on wrenching the floral wire and tying the threads.

She managed to get 3 flowers finished in 1 hour including all the pauses for me to take photos, so she gave 1 to her grandma (my mum) and 2 to her aunties (my sister and sister-in law). Did she forget about me????… she said “mum, you can always make a better one for yourself!”…. “oh no….but I want one from you?” This mummy end up didn’t get the flower from her daughter, poor me :( BUT….. I have a belated present from hubby…. a “Super Mom” organic t-shirt he ordered from Cafe Press, lol!!!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!!

Ooooohhh ohh, wait!!! Don’t forget to participate in the May Giveaway, I am giving away 4 pcs. of fat quarters of my very first fabric design…….
