Size

The bee baby hat crochet pattern comes in 4 baby sizes, designed to coordinate perfectly with the Bee Romper and Wings for a consistent, well-balanced fit across the costume set. Each size has been carefully graded to keep the hat’s proportion, comfort, and shape true to the original design.

If your baby’s head size falls between two sizes, go one size up — babies grow quickly, and a little extra room ensures a comfy fit that lasts longer.

Size (months)Hat CircumferenceHat Length
3–614½″5½″
6–1216″6″
12–1818″6½″
18–2419½″7″

Materials

This bee baby hat is made with combed milk cotton yarn in light-worsted weight, giving it a soft, breathable feel that’s perfect for babies. Only a partial ball of each yellow and black from a 100g ball is needed to create the cheerful stripes.

Two chenille pipe cleaners form the flexible cores of the antennae, and a small amount of polyester fiberfill is used to stuff their rounded tips for a soft, playful look.

Tools

A 3.5 mm crochet hook keeps the gauge consistent with the Bee Romper and Wings, so every piece in the costume set matches perfectly.

Stitch markers help track rounds as you go, while a tapestry needle and scissors make it easy to finish off and weave in ends neatly.

Stitches Used

This beginner-friendly pattern uses only basic crochet stitches:

How to Crochet the Baby Bee Hat

Follow this quick photo guide to crochet the bee hat from the ribbed band to the playful antennae. The complete written pattern sheet with stitch counts and sizes is available at the end of this post for download and easy reference.

Step 1: Crochet the Ribbed Band

easy yet stretchy crochet ribbed band using slip stitches on back loop only

Crochet a yellow ribbed band in back-loop slip stitches to create a soft, stretchy brim. Keep the starting yarn tail for joining later and stop without fastening off at the final row.

Step 2: Join the Band & Start the Hat Body

how to crochet dc stitches from the edge of ribbed band

Join the short ends of the band to form a ring — this becomes the base of the hat.

Begin working double crochet (dc) stitches evenly along the top edge, skipping every third ridge to maintain even tension. The red highlight in the photo shows the ridge loop where you’ll insert your hook.

Step 3: Crochet the Striped Crown

basic crochet hat for babies from 3-24 months.

Following the crochet pattern, work upward in dc rounds to shape the hat.

Start with one yellow round, then one black, followed by the repeating sequence of two yellow rounds and one black until the desired height is reached.

Lightly block the hat to even out the stitches and shape it neatly.

Step 4: Make the Antennae

Crochet two black antennae, starting with the globe. Lightly stuff it with fiberfill, then insert a pipe cleaner before continuing the tube. Leave about 1½″ of pipe cleaner exposed for attaching to the hat.

Step 5: Attach the Antennae

attach bee antennae with pipe cleaner in it to the crochet hat.

Insert each antenna’s pipe cleaner through Round 8 (black stripe) of the hat, pushing it from the top down through the same round. Bend the wire tip inward, then insert it back into the crochet tube to lock it in place and hide the metal ends.

attach bee antennae to the crochet hat.

Position the antennae evenly on top of the crown. Using the reserved yarn tail, sew the crocheted base of each antenna firmly onto the hat, keeping your stitches small and hidden along the black stripe for a neat finish.

Step 6: Finish & Shape

Weave in all yarn ends neatly, then gently bend the antennae slightly to give them that cute, bee-like curve. Make sure both antennae sit evenly on the crown — and your cheerful bee hat is ready to buzz!

Your little bee hat is now complete — soft, cozy, and full of character! Pair it with the bee romper crochet pattern and bee wings crochet pattern to complete the full bee baby outfit for the sweetest photo moments or themed celebrations.

Abbreviations:

(In US Crochet Terms)

BLO = Back Loop Only
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together (dc decreasing stitch)
sc = single crochet
inc = 2 single crochet in same stitch
inv dec = single crochet invisible decrease (sc decreasing stitch)
sk = skip
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
sl knot = slip knot
fo = fasten off
RS = Right Side
WS = Wrong Side

Crochet Gauge

18 sts x 9 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in double crochet (dc).
18 sts x 21 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in single crochet (sc).

Adjust hook size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.

Construction Notes

  1. Use the size chart above to determine which stitch counts in parentheses to follow.
  2. Begin with the ribbed band: Using yellow yarn, crochet slip stitches in the back loop only to form a soft, stretchy brim that hugs gently without feeling tight. Join the short ends to make a loop—this becomes the hat’s base.
  3. Work the striped crown: From the edge of the ribbed band, crochet upward in double crochet stitches, starting with one round in yellow, followed by one in black. Continue the stripe pattern of two yellow rounds and one black round as you shape the hat toward the tip of the crown.
  4. Crochet the antennae: Make two black antennae by crocheting the globe first, then insert a pipe cleaner before continuing with the slim single-crochet tube. Leave about 1½″ of wire to anchor the antennae onto the hat. Lastly, sew the base securely to the crown.
  5. Weave in ends neatly and block lightly to shape if needed.

Stitch Notes

  1. The first ch 2 at the beginning of a round/row counts as 1 dc stitch unless stated otherwise. When counted as a stitch, ensure you work into it in the next round or row.
  2. The first ch 1 at the beginning of a ribbed band does not count as a stitch.
  3. When the pattern says "turn", it means turning your crochet piece to the other side, for example, turning from the right side to the wrong side.
  4. When the pattern says "Join", it means join with a sl st to the first stitch of the round. The sl st used to join rounds is not counted as a stitch. Pull the sl st tightly to make it smaller and less visible for a neat, seamless join.

Bee Hat Crochet Pattern

Follow the stitch counts listed in parentheses based on your selected size, and use a stripe pattern of 2 rounds of Yellow followed by 1 round of Black.

Ribbed Band

With yellow yarn.

Foundation chain: Leave a long yarn tail of at least 8 inches, sl knot, ch 5.

Antennae (make 2)

(Work on RS and in continuous rounds only)

Crochet with black yarn and using sc stitches only.

Round 1: MR, 6 sc into the ring. {6 sts}
Round 2: inc 6 times. {12 sts}
Round 3: (sc in next st, inc) 6 times. {18 sts}
Round 4 - 6: sc around. {18 sts}
Round 7: (sc in next st, inv dec) 6 times. {12 sts}
Round 8: inv dec 6 times. {6 sts}

Stuff with Polyester fiberfill & insert a pipe cleaner (always bend the end inward so the metal tip is covered and safely tucked inside the crochet piece) into this small globe.

Round 9 - 23: sc around. {6 sts}
fo. Leave long tail for sewing.

Cut the pipe cleaner 1½" longer than the crocheted antenna — the extra length is used to secure the antenna to the hat.

Finishing

Sew to attach the antennae
Insert the exposed end of the pipe cleaner through the crochet stitches at round 8 (black stripe) on the hat. Bend it inside, then insert the tip back into the antenna through the stitch next to it to lock it securely in place.

Using the reserved yarn tail, sew around the crocheted base of the antenna to fasten it neatly onto the hat. Make a few small, firm stitches around the joining area to ensure the antenna sits upright and is well-secured.

Weave In Ends:
Weave in all yarn tails and hide them within stitches for a clean finish.

Block the hat:
Block the crochet bee hat to the measurements if needed. Here is the tutorial on how to block your crochet pieces.
Designer note: I prefer to wash and block the crochet project before handing it to the baby for their first wear.
