About This Crochet Lion Keychain Pattern

FuFu is a mini amigurumi lion head inspired by traditional Chinese lion dance costumes. The design recreates the iconic elements of the lion head in a compact and playful crochet form.

The project is made by crocheting several components — including the eyes, mouth, cape, horn, nose, forehead flower, beard, and ears — and assembling them to form the final lion head.

Because of the number of parts and decorative details, this pattern is best suited for advanced crocheters or confident beginners who enjoy detailed amigurumi.

The complete free crochet pattern, with step-by-step instructions, is provided below.

Tools and Materials

To crochet FuFu, prepare the following materials & tools.

      • Red
      • White
      • Black
      • Khaki
    • For the fluffy trim, use golden yellow Fluffy Pipsqueak yarn (3-strand type) (I used this yarn).

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this pattern beginner-friendly?

This pattern is best suited for advanced crocheters or confident beginners because it involves multiple pieces and detailed assembly.

2. Can beginners try this pattern?

Yes, adventurous beginners can try it, but be prepared for a bit of a challenge. FuFu is made from several small pieces that need to be assembled carefully, so patience and attention to detail will help a lot. If you’ve already made a few amigurumi projects, you should be able to handle it. If you’re new to amigurumi, you may also find our Amigurumi for Beginners guide helpful before starting this pattern.

3. What should beginners expect when making this pattern?

Expect a project that focuses more on assembly and decoration than difficult stitches. The crochet stitches themselves are simple, but placing the eyes, beard, and facial features neatly takes some time. Working with fluffy yarn for the fur details may also add a bit of difficulty, as the stitches can be harder to see. Take it slowly and enjoy the process.

4. Any tips for beginners attempting this project?

Here are a few helpful tips:
– Complete all the small parts first before starting assembly.
– Pin or position pieces first before sewing permanently.
– Work slowly when attaching facial details, as they shape the lion’s expression.
Don’t worry if the first one isn’t perfect—each FuFu you make will look even better.

5. Why are my fluffy yarn stitches hard to see?

Fluffy yarn hides stitches easily. Crochet slowly and feel the stitches with your fingers to guide your hook.

6. Can I trim fluffy yarn if it looks messy?

Yes. Carefully trim excess fuzz, little by little, but avoid cutting the actual crochet stitches.

Step-by-Step Tutorial With Photos

Start by following the crochet pattern at the end of this article to make all the parts of FuFu. Once you’ve got everything ready, come back here for the step-by-step guide on putting your cute little lion together.

Step 1. Check the eye orientation

After finishing the head up to Round 17, insert the safety eyes at Round 10. Position the eyes through stitch 16 and stitch 26, maintaining a distance of 10 stitches apart.

Ensure the thicker edge of the fur is oriented at the top, with the yarn tails placed at the outer corners.

Step 2. Insert the eyes

Push the crochet fabric firmly toward the eyes so the posts extend to their maximum length for better locking.

Secure the back caps in place. If they don’t hold firmly due to the thick crochet fabric, apply a small amount of glue for extra hold.

Step 3. Stuff and close the head

Stuff the head firmly with polyester fiberfill. Continue crocheting the head, adding more stuffing if needed, and close the opening of the last round.

Step 4. Stitch the eye whites to the head

Stitch the outer white yarn tail to the head at Round 10, extending 4–5 stitches upward around the eye. Hide the yarn tails inside the head.

Step 5. Attach the mouthpiece

Place the mouthpiece at the lower front of the head, aligning it from the closing of the last round up to Round 15. Center it neatly beneath the eyes so it spans 14 stitches across Round 15, then sew it securely in place.

Step 6. Check the front view

After sewing the mouthpiece in place, the lion’s head should look like this. Check that the eyes and mouth are centered and balanced before moving on to the next steps.

Step 7. Sew the cape

Attach the cape at the back of the head along Round 11, centered across 18 stitches.

Step 8. Attach horn, nose, and forehead flower

Sew the horn at the top, attach the nose at Round 10, and place the forehead flower between them. Hide all yarn tails except the nose yarn tail, which will be used later.

Step 9. Mark the center for the beard

Cut an arm-span length of yarn and tie the midpoint at Round 12, centered between the eyes, so the ends hang down evenly. This marks the spot for attaching the beard.

Step 10. Sew the beard piece

Sew the beard to the head by stitching through the foundation chain of the beard.

Start with 2 horizontal stitches from the midpoint of round 12, then stitch diagonally down to Round 16 (a stitch from the corner inside the mouth). Next, stitch diagonally upward toward the cape, and finish horizontally at the midpoint at the back of the head.

Repeat the same path on the opposite side to make both sides symmetrical.

Step 11. Check the beard placement

This shows the lion after the beard is attached. Ensure the beard is symmetrical and aligned with the center.

Step 12. Attach the nose beads

Sew two beads or jingle bells to the sides of the nose using the reserved yarn tail. Hide the yarn tail inside the head.

Step 13. Attach ears and horn fur

Sew the ears in a cupped position 2 rounds away from the horn.

Glue fur yarn around the horn base.

Step 14. Add fur under the lips

Attach a fur yarn strip to the underlip for a fluffy lower beard, and neatly tuck away any yarn tails inside the head.

Step 15. Trim and tidy up (optional)

Gently trim FuFu with scissors to tidy the yarn and remove excess fuzz, ensuring the lion looks neat and well-groomed.

Pattern Instructions

  1. This pattern is worked by assembling several parts to form the head of the pocket lion dance.
  2. First, crochet the eyes, mouth, cape, horn, nose, forehead flower, beard, and ears according to the crochet patterns given.
  3. Once the small parts are done, crochet the head of the lion until you reach Round 17. Position the eye with the thicker fur at the top and the yarn tail at the outer corner. Make sure both yarn tails point outward, not toward the center of the face. Insert the safety eyes at Round 10, at stitch 16 and 26 (10 stitches apart). Continue crocheting and stuff to complete the head.
  4. Stitch the outer white yarn tail to the head at Round 10, extending 4–5 stitches upward and around the eye white to secure and shape it. Hide all remaining yarn tails neatly inside the head.
  5. Sew the mouthpiece to the lower front of the head, positioning it from the closing of the last round up to Round 15. Center it neatly beneath the eyes, ensuring it spans 14 stitches across Round 15 for proper alignment.
  6. Sew the cape to the back of the head at Round 11, centering it across 18 stitches along the middle of the head.
  7. Sew the horn to the top of the head at the magic ring area. Attach the nose at Round 10, then position the forehead flower midway between the horn and the nose. Stitch them securely and hide all yarn tails inside the head, except for the nose.
  8. Attach a separate strand of yarn at Round 12, aligning with the midpoint between the eyes. Starting from the center of the beard, sew the red foundation chain to the head as follows: 2 stitches horizontally, then diagonally down to Round 16, 1 stitch from the corner inside the mouth, continue diagonally upward toward the cape, and finish horizontally to the midpoint at the back of the head. Repeat on the opposite side, keeping both sides symmetrical.
  9. Sew 2 beads at the sides of the nose with the yarn tail reserve.
  10. Sew the ears to the head in a cupped position, placing them 2 rounds away from the horn. Align and position them carefully to ensure they are symmetrical.
  11. Lastly, glue a strip of fur yarn around the horn and along the underlip. Tuck the fur yarn tails neatly inside the head to secure.
  12. Trim lightly with scissors to remove excess fuzz and tidy the fur yarn.
