Crochet: Basket Weave Afghan – Baby Blanket {Pattern & Tutorial}

Often, I received feedback from readers asking me where to get the yarns I used for my crochet and/or knitting projects. Frankly speaking, I bought most of my yarns from the local yarn shops around here and I do understand that it is hard for many of you to get the exact one. This time, to make my pattern more yarn-search-friendly, I used Lion Brand, a well known yarn company where you can order online or buy them from shop if they are available.

This blanket is made from cotton medium worsted yarn, the basket weave pattern makes it warm and cozy in cold weather. If you need a very warm version for snowy winter, change the yarn to wool. The dimension is for baby blanket, you can always blown it up to make a bigger piece. Each weave square repeats at 6 sts, so, to add width to the blanket, just add multiple of 6 sts to the width.

  1. Just Beautiful! Thank you. I have just started this for a friend. will post photos on ravelry. Thanks once again for the pattern

    • Wow, you are super fast!!! Thanks for sharing your photos with us, can’t wait to see your version :)

      • Hi, it looks amazing on the picture so I have started one of my own :)
im kind of new at this so i have a question, I did the second raw of DC, but now the material seems wavy. i think i might did the chain too tight , do you think i should start over or will it sort through later with more lines?

        thank you
        sara

        • Hi Sara,
It does looks a little wavy after the first row or two.
If you are using the same hook size with the same tension, then I would say crochet another few rows before you decide to start again.
If the tension is way too exaggerated, please restart with a looser chain.

          • Thank you for the advice,
I think the first row of the chain is the one that is too tight, but i will keep going and see how it goes, hope it wont effect the looks of the blanket.
is there a way to post a picture in here?

  2. My baby is using the blanket now and he likes it. It’s cold now…thanks for the tender loving care from his god mother. Hahaha.

  3. I have always wanted to try a basket weave blanket but I have to have a color change every few rows or I will never finish the blanket! I will have to force myself to make one like this. I love the edging :)

  4. Sooo cute!!!! I would like to make it but I can’t do it with writen instructions… don’t you have the drawing instructions?

    thanks
    elsa

  6. Love this afhgan. Just a question — when the pattern says FPdc3, BPdc3 does that mean FPdc in next 3 stitches, BPdc in the next 3 stitches or do you do the FP & BPdc’s in the next stitch only??? Please answer as soon as possible, would like to get started on this as soon as possible. Thanks.

  7. That is so pretty! Thanks for the great giftable blanket, I’ll be linking.

  8. Is this a quick crochet project? It is lovely.

  9. I an learning crochet and can read patterns as long as they are not too complicated, but i’m lost on row one. what does sk mean? I cannot see it in the abbreviations. And it says sk 3 ch, dc in 4th st from hook, ch2 turn. do you mean dc, ch2 across all 154. then turn? Sorry to sound silly but for a newbie it’s confusing!
    Thanks .
    Tricia.

    • Hi Tricia,
sk means skip. I have just put up the abbrev in the post, sorry that I missed it and caused the confusion.
The first row should be: skip the first 3ch and start dc from 4th ch onwards for 153 sts, then only do the ch2 and turn.

  10. I’ve tried a few other Basket Weave afghans & they just didn’t seem right to me. But this pattern I “get” it!! I can’t wait to give it a try!! I hope this one works out, I LOVE the basket weave look!! Thank you for sharing your pattern!!

  11. Question for you…I want to make my son a blanket using the basket weave “stitch.” He is not a baby so I want to make it bigger. Can I use any number of chains to start the blanket or is there a certain multiple?

    Thanks so much.

  12. Just love this basketweave pattern! I am running out today to pick up the yarn!! btw, where can I get the Congratulations ribbon! It makes the final product look that more amazing!!!! Thank you so much.

  13. I loved this pattern when if found it a few days ago. I had some leftover yarn on hand so I made a dishcloth sized sample to see how if I could “get it”. It turned out great and I am off to the craft store tomorrow since they have yarn on sale. Can’t wait to get started on the real thing.

  14. Beautiful afghan! thanks for the pattern!!!

  15. Hi, love the blanket, thank you for sharing the pattern! I just want to make sure I have the yarn amounts correct – does it really take over 1800 yards of yarn to make this baby blanket? (9 balls @ 207 yds ea) That will make it a bit pricey to make. It is lovely though!

    • Yes, it is that much of yarn for the blanket plus another 1 ball / 236 yard for the border. It is always worth it to make a gift for someone special :)

    • Hi Beverly!

I’m on ball 6/9 @ 362 yrd each. I’ve been picking up each skein a few at a time and it helps make the cost seem less however, I’m making one for a friend’s baby shower but will only be using 6 instead of 9. [plus the border ball] It’ll still be a decent size. I found with the yardage of the skein I’m using, it’ll make a great crib blanket which can last through being a toddler! The yarn I’ve been using is about $5 each which made me cringe at first but the pattern is just so lovely and it’s really worth it.

If you’re really worried about the price, I’d check with your local craft/hobby store and see if they have one of those ’40%’ regular priced item coupons and if you’re like me, you’ll be in the store every other day anyway. If not, I’ve adapted this pattern to make basket weave crochet squares to connect into a larger blanket. It’s helping me go through my scrap yarn, which since I bought the yarn already for other projects, is like having a free blanket. :)

      • Thank you for those tips and ideas, I could maybe swing a smaller blanket. Using the 6 balls instead of 9 – what size did your blanket turn out to be? Also, did you use the same yarn as listed in the pattern or something else? I know some yarns come in larger skeins. There is a craft store about 90 miles away and I do take advantage of their coupons when I am up that way. The bad thing is they never have more than 2 or 3 balls of the same lot number in stock! :o (

Would you mind terribly sharing your “adaptation” making the basketweave squares? I could do that!! That would solve the problems of the mixed dye lots too. :o ) My email is Noahsmom @ hotmail.com (take out the spaces)

  16. Hi =) .. Firstly, this looks lovely and I can’t wait to make it!!

I just have one quick question – could you please clarify whether your pattern uses US or UK stitches? I’m suspecting US, but I would hate to start and have it be wrong.

    Thank you =)

  17. Row 1 : sk 3 ch, dc in the 4th ch from hook, ch2, turn
In this step, what do you mean by ch2. can u clarify plz.

  18. Hello, just teaching myself this pattern. I now know what a FPdc & a BPdc are. The video at http://www.nexstitch.com/v_front_back_post_stitch.html was very helpful for these stitches. I completed rows 1 thru 5 on a sampler and I see the basket pattern. I am having trouble at the ends of each row. Could you explain until last 2 sts, hdc2, ch2, turn. My sampler seems to narrow.

    Thank You.

  19. This was such a wonderful pattern and very easy to follow! I just finished the blanket for a new baby in the family! Thank you so much for sharing with the crochet world.

  20. Hello,
I am working on this pattern as a baby blanket for an expected nephew. I am using acrylic yarn and I often find that the basketweave stitch is often open (I’ve used it before for dishcloths), with a lot of stretch. Based on the first couple rows, if I stretch the fabric, I can see small holes in the blanket. Does your blanket do this (show open gaps when stretched), or should I move to a smaller hook? I did a swatch to check gauge, but wanted to get your opinion. I’d appreciate any advice you could offer.

    • You will see some holes when stretched but it is not too bad for my case. If you are using the right hook size for your yarn, it should be good. Anyway, you can always reduce 1 size smaller if you don’t feel comfortable with the tension.

  21. I am loving this pattern!! And as soon as I saw it I decided I needed to make it in a “Carseat” sized blanket for my baby who is due any day! I love the look of the basket weave and I am looking forward to finishing it within the next day or so. Already 25% done and only an hour in. I made a few adjustments to the pattern making it 75 dc across and I have yet to find out exactly how many rows it will be but I am very happy that you posted this. Thank-You.

  22. I have been crocheting for a little while. I am going to start on this pattern. The sample worked up nice. Do you block your blankets when finished?

  23. Loving this!! Had seen it on pintrest several times, but the link was never there. Finally stumbled upon it while on Ravelry. Barely 8 hours in on making it as a surprise for my BF. Thank you for sharing!!

    • Glad that you finally found it. Some times when people pin on the Pinterest, either they pin from other site who used my photo but never link back, or, they didn’t pin the right individual post’s link, so, when I update my website with newer page, the link will not point to this blanket post anymore.

  24. Hi, I just had a question. I am crocheting baby blankets for this great charity in my town and I was wondering if it would be okay if I use this pattern to a make some of the blankets. Have a great day!

  25. Just finished up the blue. I didn’t realize how BIG this blanket would be! This will last him well into his toddler years for sure (and maybe longer). Very nicely done, I love the pattern.

    • Exactly!!!! 1 for all so you don’t have to do another one when he has out-grown the size of the blanket. Worth the time and money invested to make this blanket and I am sure he will like it a lot… sentimental value that counts :)

  26. I was just reading all the comments and on one the person was going to make the blanket wider and you told her a multiple of 6 and I do not understand how to do multiple can you explain thank you

    • Hi Rachel, a set of weave pattern is made up by 6 stitches. If you would like to increase the size of the blanket, just add multiple of 6 stitches to the pattern on the width. For example, I started with 156 chains, you can start with 162, 168, 174, 180 or something longer than this but it has to be an addition of multiple of 6 stitches.

  27. Thank you so much for your pattern tutorial for the weave blanket. I will have to try this! The pictures help soooooo much!. I crochet, but have not done a lot – and the pictures help to clarify the pattern more so than just words.

  28. Love this pattern but you do need crochet experience. It sounds like a few beginners are starting with this pattern. Marlene, your pattern narrows because you are not counting the ch2 as the first stitch when you turn. Hope this helps. Thank you for the pattern, I happened to get cones of 16 oz on clearance for $2.48 at Joann’s so I can make this for $5. Yippee!!! I have made several basketweave blankets before.

  30. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!I just made this blanket using Hobby Lobby’s ‘I love this Cotton’. I inverted your color scheme using ivory for the body and blue for the edge. I also added a round of a camel color in between the two and I think it looks really lovely.

I also whipped up a little brimmed hat to match and shipped it off to friends having a baby. I cannot wait for them to receive it! Thank you again.

(I wish I could post a pic to share what you inspired. :) )

  31. Hi, just to check with you, the hdc2 for second row (at the end) do you do it from the front or back? or follow the FPdc/BPdc???

  33. Adorable blanket! Would it be possible to make a smaller size of the blanket by decreasing the number of stitches in the starting chain? I wasn’t sure if there was a formula. Thank you!

  34. I LOVE this blanket!! I am looking into learning how to crochet/knit (not sure what the difference is, lol). I have never even held a piece of yarn before. What is your suggestion on how to start? I would love to work my way up to making this blanket! I do love to Cross-stitch, maybe that will help me a little.

    • Hi Kathryn,
Buy a ball of cheap acrylic yarn and a matching hook size, learn the basic crochet stitches like chain, single crochet and double crochet. You can find lots of basic crochet stitch in Youtube.
Happy learning your new skill :)

  36. I love this blanket.. I have been trying to make it for nearly a year!! But am only half-way!!

  37. Hi Rach LJ, keep it going, actually it is a quick project for me. Just took a few days to complete while watching on TV :)

  38. Thank you for the encouragement :) I just need to find the time after work or on the weekend! My goal is to finish before Christmas!

  39. I’m planning to make this blanket for a friend who is pregnant with her first baby. I have a question about row one though – it says to sk 3 ch, dc in the 4th ch from hook, ch2, turn. Am I supposed to dc all the way across my beginning chain before doing the ch2 and turn?? The way it reads to me is that I do a single dc in that 4th ch, then automatically ch2 and turn. If I do that I have no where to go! Thanks in advance for any clarification anyone can provide!!

  40. Your pattern is wonderful and thank you for sharing. Did you give permission for this site to copy it verbatim?

  42. This is probably a stupid question, but with skipping the first stitch on each row, does the blanket not get more narrow as you go? I’ve done 5 rows, and it seems to be getting smaller. Any advice would be much appreciated!

  43. Hi
I’m about to finish my blanket, Yay! but i have a question, i just finished the blue part and did the first blue roundof the boarder with sc but i got to the side where i started the blanket and it already has the sc stitch sample. should i do another sc stitch on that to finish my round 1 boarder? or can i fo and then start with the white boarder?

    thanks!

  44. last question:
I am on the last round slst the white boarder, do I slst to the top last round loop or the first round loop?
you wrote “slst to the beginning ch” which beginning?

thank you for all your help! it turned out to be amazing gift

  45. I can’t wait to get this project going :)

  47. Thank you for posting instructions for such a lovely project. I did have one quick question about the starting chain. Could this (and the first row of DC) be replaced with a double crochet foundation row of 154? I just learned how to do the different foundation stitches, and I wasn’t sure if there are limitations in applying that technique for projects like this.
    Thanks!

  48. I would like to make the basket weave baby blanket but have no idea how to do the stitches: FPdc and BPdc…would appreciate an explanation
    …thanks
