Serving as the base design for a small heart series I’m developing, this pattern will soon be joined by three new amigurumi heart styles:

  • a chubby heart, with a slightly plumper shape
  • a curvy heart, featuring a playful curved tail at the bottom
  • a half-and-half dual-tone heart, made using a special short-row technique

I’ll link to those patterns here once they’re ready, so you can explore different heart shapes using the same basic construction idea. So, stay tuned!

About This Amigurumi Heart Pattern

This crochet heart pattern is worked from top to bottom using two separate “bumps” that are joined together to form the upper curves of the heart.

The pattern comes in three sizes — Small, Medium, and Large. While the stitch counts differ, the construction method is exactly the same for all sizes. Once you understand how the two bumps are joined and shaped, you’ll be able to crochet any size confidently.

For easy reference, the complete written crochet pattern for all three amigurumi heart sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) is available at the end of this post. This free amigurumi heart pattern includes a downloadable version, which is especially helpful if you’d like to:

Materials & Tools

You can use any yarn in your preferred color for this amigurumi heart. Only a small amount is needed, which makes it perfect for using up leftover yarn from previous projects. The hearts shown in this tutorial were crocheted with milk-cotton light-worsted yarn.

Use a crochet hook suitable for your yarn weight. I used a 2.5 mm crochet hook with light-worsted yarn. If you choose a different yarn weight, simply adjust the hook size accordingly. Please note that the finished size of your amigurumi heart will vary depending on the yarn and hook size you use.

To give the heart its soft, plump shape, stuff it with polyester fiberfill as you crochet.

You will also need:

Finished Sizes

Using light-worsted yarn and a 2.5 mm crochet hook, the finished amigurumi heart sizes are approximately:

  • Large Heart: 4 inches
  • Medium Heart: 3 inches
  • Small Heart: 2 inches

Note: Finished sizes will vary if you use a different yarn weight or hook size.

Crochet Stitches & Abbreviations Used

Only a few basic crochet stitches are used in this amigurumi heart pattern, making it beginner-friendly and easy to follow. Below are the stitches and abbreviations you’ll see throughout the pattern:

If you’re new to amigurumi, the magic ring helps create a tightly closed center, while the invisible decrease keeps your shaping smooth and neat — especially important when forming the tapered tip of the heart. Step-By-Step Photo Tutorial

The construction method is the same for all three heart sizes. The photos below show how the two top bumps are joined and shaped to form the amigurumi heart.

Step 1: Crochet the Two Top Bumps

Step 1: Crochet the Two Top Bumps

Crochet two bumps, fastening off the first.

Continue with the second until it’s ready to join the first.

Position both bumps side by side on the table to visualize how the heart will come together before the next round.

Step 2: Join Bump 1 While Crocheting

Step 2: Join The Bumps

Continue working from Bump 2.

Skip the first 2 stitches of Bump 1, then insert your hook into the 3rd stitch onward of Bump 1 and begin crocheting around until you reach the last stitch of the round.

Step 3: Complete Joining Round

After crocheting across Bump 1, work back on Bump 2 to complete the round. Both bumps will then form a heart shape at the top.

Step 4: The Gap Between the Bumps

Step 4: The Gap Between Bumps

After joining the bumps, a small gap may appear at the stitches. This is normal and will close in the next step for a smooth heart shape.

Step 5: Stitch the Gap Closed

Step 5: Stitch the Gap

Use a tapestry needle and the yarn tail from Bump 1 to neatly close the gap.

Pull the yarn snugly but not too tight, ensuring the stitches blend with the surrounding fabric.

Step 6: Ready to Crochet the Body

Step 6: Crochet the Body

After closing the gap, the top of the amigurumi heart should be smooth and symmetrical. You can now continue crocheting the body according to the pattern.

Step 7: Stuff the Amigurumi Heart

Step 7: Stuffing

As you work toward the tip of the heart, start filling it with polyester fiberfill. Use blunt-point tweezers to gently push the stuffing into both curves. Shape the curves evenly with your fingers, and add the stuffing gradually to avoid over-stuffing. Taking care to shape it now will enhance the final appearance.

Step 8: Close the Opening and Finish

Step 8: Finishing

To complete crocheting, fasten off by threading the yarn through the front loops of the remaining stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull tight to close the opening and weave in the yarn tail.

Your crochet heart is complete!
