Originally designed for Elwis the Elephant Amigurumi, these diaper pants are a perfect fit for other animals in the ZooVenture collection too! The pattern includes button closures, a customizable tail hole, and a snug fit for tiny bodies—whether crocheted or real. With just a few materials and a touch of crochet magic, you’ll create a charming addition to your handmade treasures.

Crochet Supplies Needed

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Yarn (light worsted, DK or 8-ply weight) in Blue and White.
Note: Acrylic yarn works well for amigurumi, but if you’re making this for a baby, it’s recommended to use organic cotton or premium acrylic yarn to prevent skin irritation and ensure comfort for delicate skin.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • Small buttons (7/16″ – 1/2″), 2 pcs.
  • Stitch Marker
  • Tapestry needle or darning needle (Long)
  • Scissors

Finished Size

Getting the perfect fit starts with getting your crochet gauge just right. Start by making a swatch and measuring it to check your stitch size:

  • Gauge: 22 stitches x 26 rows in a 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm) swatch using single crochet stitches.

If your measurements and stitch count match, you can expect your crochet diaper pants to finish with these measurements:

  • Waist: 13 inches (33 cm)
  • Thigh Opening: 7 inches (18 cm)

This size is perfect for preemie babies, but this crochet pattern is highly adaptable. To make larger sizes, simply use a bulkier yarn (such as worsted-weight yarn) along with a larger crochet hook. This adjustment makes it easy to create diaper pants for newborns, babies up to 3 months old, or even older.

Knowing how yarn weight and crochet gauge affect your project’s size is essential for customizing the fit and achieving the desired results.

Use blue yarn to add the edging and give the diaper pants a clean, polished look:

  • Begin at Point A as shown in the diagram. Make a chain stitch.
  • Round 1: Work single crochet (sc) stitches evenly around the edges, creating smooth curves by making 3sc in each corner (blue dots or C).
For the black zone (A), work single sc on every sc stitch or 2sc on hdc stitch.
For the red zones (B), work sc2tog stitches to shape the curves.
Here are the detailed stitch counts for each section:
    • A: sc in next 12 sts.
      B: sc2tog for 15 times in the next 30 sts .
A: sc in next 17 sts.
C: 3sc in the corner st.
