A Brief Background Of This Baby Mobile
It all started with a request to be interviewed and featured in one of Malaysia’s leading English newspapers, The Star, for the Craftypedia column. I’m the cover story of The Star2 with a two-page full-page story and a two-page half-page tutorial on this owl baby mobile. Click the link to read the title “Living and sharing her passion through crafting“.
I designed this “Forest of Owls” woodland theme mobile to share with The Star’s readers. I am so grateful that the columnist, Lee Mei Li, allowed me to share it here.
As many of you are aware, I recently moved into a new home and still have a lot of work to do on the interior design. These two sets of owl mobiles (pink and blue) arrived just in time for my daughter’s and son’s rooms. I’m glad they like it dangling from their ceiling, watching them swing and fall asleep under a dim nightlight.
The owl is approximately 3.5″ tall, and the tree is 5″ tall. Although they are all hand-sewn from felt in this tutorial, machine sewing is also an option. Simple embroidery or sewing with ric rac and lace trim is used to decorate the owls’ bodies.
Aside from using different colors on the owl to differentiate the gender, you can arrange the mobile into two designs. For the pink owl, I arranged them side by side on a twig. For the blue owl, I tied the owls along the embroidery hoop, with the tree in the center.
To begin sewing, download the printable sewing template from the tutorial section below. Sew four owls (or more if desired) with varying facial expressions and hang them from a stick or an embroidery hoop. Then, to finish the “Forest of Owl” baby mobile, add a few hearts and a tree (templates included too).

How To Sew Owl Hanging Ornament With Felt
- Cut the felt along the inside of the traced lines so that no ugly ink shows on the cut-out felt.
- Layer the white felt eye over one of the pink face pieces and blanket stitch it in place.
Sew three strips of ric rac trim to a grey body piece using a backstitch. - Place the nose between the eyes and backstitch it in place.
Sew on the decorative buttons to serve as eyes. - Play around with different facial expressions. Here are 4 examples of different owl faces/expressions.
- Align the felt pieces for the head and body’s front and back. Place the pink wings atop the front body piece. Secure with a pin.
- Sew the front and back body pieces together with a blanket stitch, beginning at the bottom of the left wing. Pause just before the top of the body. Sandwich a long length of cotton twine between the felt pieces (with a knotted end to keep the twine in place). Continue blanket stitching along the body’s edges until you reach the bottom of the right wing.
- Fill the body with poly-stuffing and finish stitching the piece together.
- Here are three examples of body designs. You are free to make your own design.
- Sandwich the cord between the head felt piece and the body, allowing it to run through the top of the head. Begin blanket stitching from the bottom of the head and work your way up to the left ear.
- Finish stitching the pieces and stuff the head. If necessary, use a ball pen or tweezer to push the polyfill stuffing into the head.
- The completed owl hanging ornament. Sew a few more with different expressions and bodies, as shown above.
How To Sew Tree Hanging Ornament With Felt
- Cut felt on the tree template, tree/crown, trunk, and small hearts in the same way you did on the Owl.
- Arrange the hearts on the crown of the tree and blanket stitch them in place.
- Layer the tree trunk pieces and blanket stitch the bottom half of the piece together.
Layer the top half of the trunk on one of the crown pieces and blanket stitch it together. - Place the second crown piece, align the tree crown, pin it in place, and sew the trunk to it.
- Stuff the trunk with polyfill stuffing. Push the poly-stuffing in with a pen or tweezer. If needed, massage the trunk to even out the lumps.
- Blanket stitch the crown and thread a knotted cord through the center of the tree. Stop about 1 1/2′′ from the end, stuff the crown with polyfill stuffing, and add more to the trunk you just stuffed to make the stuffing even.
- Finish stitching the crown pieces together.
Baby Mobile Assembly
Repeat to make 4 or more owls. Finish with a tree and some hearts hung from a stick or an embroidery hoop.

HOW TO SEW OWL NURSERY MOBILE
Download and print the pattern template on paper or on cardstock, cut the templates out, and trace them on the felt with a ball pen according to the color shown in the picture.
SEW OWL
- Cut felt by following the inside of the traced lines so that no ugly ink is shown on the cut-out felt.
- Layer the white felt eye above one of the pink face pieces, then sew blanket stitches to secure it.
Position three strips of ricrac ribbon trim onto a grey body piece and sew with a backstitch. - Center the nose between the eyes and backstitch it in place.
Sew on the fancy buttons for eyes. - Experiment with different expressions. Here are the 4 different faces/expressions that you can give to the owl.
- Align the front and back felt pieces of the head and body. Position the pink wings on top of the front body piece. Pin in place.
- Sew the front and back body pieces together with a blanket stitch, starting from the bottom of the left wing. Pause right before the top center of the body. Sandwich a long length of cotton twine (with a knotted end) between the felt pieces. Continue blanket stitching across the edges of the body until you reach the bottom of the right wing.
- Fill up the body with poly-stuffing and finish stitching up the piece.
- You can also try a different design for the body – here are three, for starters.
- Hold the head felt piece to the body and sandwich the cord in between, letting it run out at the top center of the head. Start blanket stitching from the bottom of the head and continue on until you reach the left ear.
- Stuff the head and finish stitching up the piece. If needed, use a ball pen to push the poly-stuffing into the head.
- The completed owl mobile. Sew another few of them with different expressions and bodies, as shown above.
SEW TREE
- Cut felt on the tree template, crown, trunk, and small hearts.
- Arrange the hearts on the crown and blanket stitch them in place.
- To assemble the tree trunk, stack the pieces and blanket stitch the bottom half together.
Layer one of the crown pieces on top of the top half of the trunk and blanket stitch it together. - Turn over, place the second piece of the crown, and sew the trunk to it.
- Stuff the trunk with poly-stuffing. You have to do it now and not after you have sewn up the tree. Use a pen to push the poly-stuffing in. Massage the trunk to even out the poly-stuffing if necessary.
- Blanket stitch the crown, and insert a knotted cord at the center of the tree. Stop when you are about 1 1/2″, stuff poly-stuffing into the crown, and add a little to the trunk that you stuffed just now so that the stuffing is even.
- Finish stitching up the piece.
ASSEMBLE
Make more owls, top off with some hearts and the tree, and have them dangle from a stick or an embroidery hoop.

This is a delightful tutorial. I made 3 mobiles for my little niece & nephews. Instead of the embroidery hoops, I found tiny circular plastic clothes dryer (the type to hang up small items like socks & underwear), removed the pegs & hung the owls, hearts & tree where the pegs used to be. Now I want to make one for myself too! Thank you Joanne. I've made quite a number of items from your blog & you never cease to amaze me. I'll be attempting the sock animals next. Cheers!
