raffia coin purse

From raffia to coin purse, I just couldn’t resist from designing and crochet more bags and purses from this lovely yarn. If you remember my kisslock Daisy Coin Purse and kisslock Striped Coin Purse I shared many years ago without a pattern when I just started blogging,  here is the similar crochet pattern for them, using raffia yarn instead of thread yarn. Hope you love this raffia coin purse using a kisslock frame, a perfect match for the Raffia Bucket Bag crochet pattern I shared earlier on.

raffia coin purse

This raffia coin purse with a kisslock frame is about 4″ x 2″ x 3.5″ tall in size. Using 3.5mm crochet hook with 100% natural raffia yarn, Raffia With Passion, crochet in Split Single Crochet Stitch. The crochet coin purse is then lined and sewn to the kisslock frame.

Instead of leaving the raffia coin purse as it is after crochet and sews, you may add a short strap and a leather tassel to it by hooking them at the ear. Crochet pattern for the short strap is available in the pattern page.

Either leave it plain or decorate it with a big yellow daisy flower to spice up the raffia coin purse, you decide.

Or, crochet the raffia coin purse into 2 colors and lightly dress it up with a small daisy flower, what do you think?

I am sure you will have better ideas to come up with on this raffia coin purse crochet pattern, I can’t wait to see what you will come out with. Do show us your version by tagging @craftpassion in social media, or send the picture to us via the contact form.

More Details on how to crochet the Raffia Coin Purse

Begin the crochet with a chain base followed by 1 row of normal single crochet stitch by referring to the pattern.

From 2nd row onwards, work every stitch with Split Single Crochet (ssc)
1. insert hook between the legs of the st and under the horizontal bar
2. yarn over, pull up a loop,
3. & 4. yarn over, pull through both loops

A closer look on the Split Single Crochet stitches. Ssc gives a stronger and denser crochet stitch, which is great to use for purses and bags, especially those crochet with raffia yarn.
Since raffia yarn is not as flexible as the normal yarn, single crochet with raffia tends to create holes between stitches.

After the base of the raffia coin purse is done, crochet a round of ssc around the base.

The vertical side of the coin purse body after crochet a few more rounds.

Begin crochet the tapered edge at 3 stitches to the right from the first stitch of the previous round.

Decrement by crochet 2 split single crochet together (2ssctog).

Follow the written crochet pattern to completed one side of the tapered edge.

Repeat the same to the other tapered edge, this time begin the crochet at the next stitch of the first tapered edge.

Both tapered edges are done. The coin purse is ready for the assembly process.

Set iron on medium heat. Block the coin purse by pressing it against a ball of socks (insert into the purse). If you are using other brands of raffia yarn, test the iron on a small part inside the purse.

Add a lining to the coin purse (optional)

Download and print the Raffia Coin Purse Lining Template separately if you wish to add a lining to the raffia coin purse, otherwise, you may skip it.
If your crochet coin purse is slightly bigger or smaller, you may use this lining template. Otherwise, you will need to adjust the size of the lining template and use other sizes of a kisslock frame. Please stick to the correct tension as stated in this pattern in order to get the same final dimension.

Fold the fabric into halve with right side facing each other. Align the bottom edge of the template to the folded edge, trace the sewing lines and cut the fabric with 3/8″ seam allowance.

Align and sew the side seam lines on both sides of the lining. Then sew the side bottom seamlines as shown in the picture.

Make a small snip at the seam allowance as shown in the picture. Fold along the seam lines and sew around the top edge of the lining.

The completed lining looks like this.

Insert lining into the raffia coin purse, align and pin.
Sew around the edge with a whip stitch to attach the lining securely to the coin purse.
You may also make a few stitches at the bottom of the purse and the lining to prevent pulling the lining out by accident when you are grabbing some coins from it.

Attach the kisslock frame

Temporarily secure the joints of the kisslock frame to the purse by making a few stitches through the hole and knot it. Repeat the same to the other side.

Insert the purse edges into the channel of the frame. It is ok to squeeze the fabric a little in order to slot them into the channel if the purse is a little larger than the frame.

Stitch the frame to the purse body via those little holes on the frame with strong thread. I used a wax-coated thread which is meant for leather sewing. You may use the thread for sewing jeans.
a. Insert and pull the needle from inside through hole “1”, leave a long tail of about 4″. We are using this tail to knot the thread later.
b. Insert and pull the needle from outside via hole “2”, pull tight (use another hand to hold the 4″ thread end so that it is not pull through).
c. Insert and pull the needle from inside next to (just a small distance) where it came out from, go out through the same hole, hole “2”.
Repeat the stitching (in-out at hole 3, in-out at hole 4, etc) until you finish the whole frame. Make sure the purse edge is pushed into the channel all the time during sewing.

To end the sewing, insert and pull the needle out from the last hole, tie a knot to the last stitch.

Insert the needle back into the last hole, pull tight to hide the knot into the frame. Trim the thread.
Do the same to the thread end we reserved at the first hole.

Repeat the sewing to the other side of the kisslock frame to complete the raffia coin purse.
Remove the temporary stitches you have made to the joints of the kisslock.

With this stitching technique, only tiny marks of stitches are shown on the lining. It gives a clean and tidy sewing traces on the lining.

Crochet the strap as per the given pattern. There is a ch3 hole at each end of the strap, use the holes to hook up with jump-ring or a split-ring.
You may also add small eyelets just like I did for this pattern.

Add the strap and a leather tassel or a charm to decorate if you wish to spice up the raffia coin purse.

Embellishment

raffia flower coin purse

Crochet this 10 petals flower from the Big Daisy Flower crochet pattern. Position and pin the flower onto the coin purse, sew around the petals to attach it to the purse.
Sew the flower before attaching the lining. I did this after I have sewn the purse with lining and frame because it was my last-minute idea.

This is the cute little 6 petals flower with dual-tone version, the small daisy crochet pattern is available at the above pattern section too. You may crochet multiple of them to decorate the coin purse. Change yarn color at round 7 at the purse body to get this dual-tone raffia coin purse.
