Pom Pom Tutorial: Eerie Black Widow Spider

Wooooooooo!….. an eerie black widow spider pom pom arrived in Craft Passion to spice up your Halloween!!!!
When people describe Halloween, Jack O’ Lanterns, spiders, bat, haunted houses, halloween costumes, treats basket, spooky adventures to the woods, costume party, ghost story telling, graveyard, pumpkin carving etc comes to mind….. This is kind of fun celebrating Halloween!
After making pom-pom Jack O’ Lantern, I made it’s close associate….a black widow spider. These 2 make a popular duo for Halloween. Not only this, there is a crochet pattern at the bottom of this post for the spider web.

Pom Pom Black Widow Spider

Material you will need:
1. Yarn [Black and Red]
2. Pom Pom Maker [35mm and 45mm size]
3. Pipe Cleaner, 2 [I used red but you can use black]
4. A pair of wiggle eyes[5mm]
5. Hang strap
6. A pair of sharp scissors
7. Round templates for trimming [4mm and 2mm dia.] & thumb-pins
8. Fabric glue

Wind about 3  rounds of red yarn at the center of the 45mm pom pom maker. If  your yarn is thin, you might need to wind more rounds.
Complete winding the whole pom pom maker with black yarn. Wind all black yarn on the the other arm.
Make into a pom-pom. Trim to 4mm dia. for the body by using 4mm round template.
Use 35mm pom-pom maker to make a small black pom-pom of 2mm dia by using 2mm round template to trim.
Attach the hang strap on the small pom-pom while tieing up the pom-pom.
If you want to hang the spider horizontally, attach the strap near to the red spot.

Cut the pipe cleaners in 8 nos. 5mm length. Bend 90° at the center.
Now you have a “body” pom-pom, a “head” pom-pom, 8 spiders legs and a pair of wiggle eyes ready for the assembly.
Apply some fabric glue generously at the desired position (on both body and head) before you attach the spider head to the body. Wait for about 5 to 10 minutes for the glue to get tacky before sticking them together.
Attached the wiggle eyes onto the head the same way too.
Apply some glue at the tip of the leg.
Insert it into the body until it reaches the center of the pom-pom.
Repeat the above step for the other 7 legs and your Black Widow Spider is DONE!!!
I re-bent the spider legs so that they are angled in such a way that all legs and spider’s stomach touch the ground. If you refer to the main photos, I further bent the tip of the spider leg another 90° to make it look like feet.
Don’t worry about the extra glue that looks white on the spider. It will dissapear when it is dry.
Tips: Trim the spider’s stomach to make it flat.
This is the completely dry spider, no more visible glue traces. You can hang it as a decoration at your Halloween corner, or tie it on your bag and bring it everywhere you go If you need a spider web to go with it, following is the Crochet pattern for it.

Spider Web
Finished Dimension: Approx. 14mm diameter [excluding the branches]
Abbreviations: ch = chain, sl knot = slip knot, sl st= slip stitch, dc = double crochet, fo = fasten off
Materials: crochet yarn (white), 1/0 crochet hook, stitch marker
Instructions:
beg sl knot
r1 – ch3, join with slst on the first ch to form a base ring.
r2 – ch3, place marker, *ch1, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r3 – ch3, place marker, *ch5, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r4 – ch3, place marker, *ch10, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r5 – ch3, place marker, *ch15, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r6 – ch3, place marker, *ch20, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker.
r7 – ch3, place marker, *ch25, dc1* repeat 5 times, slst on marker st, remove marker, fo, hide the yarn end.
Make 7 chained string with your preferred length and tie on each individual dc on r7. Cut excessive yarn end after tieing.
Tie your crochet spider web on the tree branches and hang your spider on it.
