Beginner-Friendly Crochet Loofah (Free Pattern)

Posted on Last updated:

How is everyone doing lately? I’ve been feeling a bit more relaxed after many years of rushing around. It’s time to enjoy a soothing at-home spa moment, so I decided to make an easy DIY crochet loofah. This soft, eco-friendly bath pouf is something you can create in no time—perfect for a little self-care that you deserve.

DIY your own shower scrubbie with this easy, beginner-friendly crochet loofah pattern. Great as a washcloth or bath pouf for everyday use or gifts!

This crochet loofah, also known as a bath pouf or shower pouf, is made using a light and airy Arch Mesh stitch, which creates two mesh rectangular panels. When these panels are cinched together, they transform into a fluffy 5-inch pouf—similar in size to a typical bath loofah.

Making it colorful is easy! Simply crochet the top and bottom halves of the mesh panel in two different colors. You’ll achieve a vibrant, four-toned look that is sure to brighten up your space!

Scroll down to view the step-by-step photo tutorial, which guides you through the entire process. The written crochet pattern is available in the loofah pattern section at the bottom of the page—and it’s easy to save or download for offline use!

Tools & Materials:

  1. Crochet Thread (approx. 500 yards)

For a soft, relaxing bath pouf, use cotton crochet thread (size 10–20).

If you prefer a scrubbier, exfoliating texture, swap it for metallic crochet thread (as shown in the photo below)—it has a gentle grit feel, perfect for gentle scrubbing.

Use metallic content crochet thread to add texture and make the loofah a bit scrubbier—perfect for gentle exfoliation.

  1. Crochet Hook

Depending on the thread size you are using, you may choose to use a 1 mm or 1.25 mm steel crochet hook.

  1. Tapestry Needle

You will need a tapestry needle to make simple sewing stitches to assemble the crochet loofah.

  1. Clips

Clips are helpful for securing stacked mesh fabrics, making it easier to sew them together. I used Clover Wonder Clips, but regular stationery clips can work just as well, as long as they hold the fabric firmly.

  1. Scissors

Crochet Gauge & Size:

Gauge isn’t a big deal for this project, so no stress if yours doesn’t match mine exactly. If your stitches are a bit tighter or looser, your loofah pouf will simply turn out slightly smaller or larger—and that’s perfectly fine. It will still work beautifully as a bath pouf.

For reference, my gauge is approximately 27 stitches x 16 rows in a 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm) swatch using the Arch Mesh stitch.

Step-by-Step Tutorial with Photos

The step-by-step images illustrate the process using plain white cotton crochet thread. However, if you prefer a scrubbier texture, you can opt for metallic crochet thread as noted in the materials list. Additionally, feel free to use colored yarns to create a more playful pouf.

If you require a printer-friendly version, it is available at the bottom of this page.

  1. Make the hanging loop

Crochet a simple foundation chain about 6 inches long, then slip stitch to join the loop.

Leave a long tail (about 36″) for assembly.

align and stack the mesh fabrics together, clip to hold them in place.
  1. Stack & secure the panels

Place the two mesh pieces together, aligning the edges neatly, and clip them to hold in place.

Sew a loose running stitch about 1.5 inches apart along the mid line of the fabric.
  1. Sew through the center

Using the long tail from the loop and a tapestry needle, attach the loop to the center of the short side of the panel. Next, sew a running stitch along the middle of the panels, keeping your stitches approximately 1.5 inches apart. Make sure to catch both layers while sewing.

Gently pull the thread to gather the fabric and cinch it into a loofah shape.
  1. Cinch & From Pouf

Gently pull the yarn to cinch the panels together, forming a fluffy, ruffled ball. Wrap the yarn around the center a few times and tie securely.

Once cinched, gently tug the layers apart with your fingers to fluff up the loofah.
  1. Fluff it up!

Pull to stretch out the mesh layers to create an even, round shape pouf.

FAQs

1. How long does it take to make this crochet loofah?

It’s a quick project! Depending on your crochet speed, you can finish it in just a couple of hours.

Absolutely. Simply adjust the number of rows and pieces of mesh fabric — more rows create a larger pouf, and an additional piece of mesh fabric results in a denser pouf.

Not at all—it gives a mild exfoliating effect without being scratchy.

4. Besides cotton and metallic thread, what other yarn can I use?

bonded nylon thread

You can also crochet with 2 to 3 strands of bonded nylon thread held together. This will give your pouf a scrubbier texture that’s durable, long-lasting, and quick to dry—perfect for making a bath pouf that’s ready for everyday use.
