💡 What’s a short row?
In crochet and knitting, short rows are partial rows that don’t complete a full round. In traditional projects, you typically turn your work to continue. However, in amigurumi, we often fasten off and start a new row instead to keep the same side of the fabric facing out. These short rows form wedge-like shapes that help the fabric curve—perfect for creating Suki’s natural spiral body!

About the Pattern
Suki is crocheted from tail to head in continuous rounds using blue as the main color. Bright orange yarn is used for the short rows, giving her body a fun, segmented look. Each short row starts with a slip knot and ends with a fasten off. The skipped stitches create gaps that you’ll fill in when you resume the round in blue, keeping everything seamless and smooth.
Thanks to the short row method, the body coils up naturally—no wire is needed to achieve Suki’s signature spiral shape.
❤️ Bonus: No major sewing! The snake is worked as one continuous piece. Only the tongue and a few facial details are added at the end.

How to Crochet the Snake – Step-by-Step with Photos
This section explains how to crochet Suki, with clear photos to help you with short rows and shaping. It’s great for visual learners or anyone trying short rows for the first time. You can find the full free crochet pattern in written instructions at the end of this article. It’s easy to print or save for quick reference whenever you need it!
Step 1: Start the Snake & Begin Short Rows

To begin, make a magic ring with orange yarn and work a few tight rounds to form the tip of the tail. Switch to blue yarn and continue in rounds.
When you reach your first short row, pause your blue round (Point A), skip a stitch (Point B), and begin the short row using orange yarn with a slip knot (Point C). This is where the magic begins—those color blocks will soon form the natural curl of the body.
Step 2: Build the Short Rows

Using orange, crochet short segments that gradually get smaller. These partial rows stack to create a “wedge” on one side, and those skipped stitches create a visible dip. You’ll work this method throughout the pattern to shape the snake naturally without wire or seams.
Step 3: Resume the Round

Once the short rows are done, pick up your blue yarn and continue crocheting in the round, making one stitch in every stitch, including those you skipped earlier. This blends the orange wedge smoothly into the round and maintains a seamless look.
Step 4: Watch the Shape Take Form

Check it out! The orange short row side is longer, causing the body to curve. The other side stays tighter, giving the snake its signature curl. You’ll repeat this shaping technique multiple times to create that iconic coiled look.
Step 5: Keep Going Until You Get This Gorgeous Curve

Keep alternating blue rounds and orange short rows, stuffing as you go. It’s easier to get even stuffing this way—no need to push fiberfill all the way down later.
Step 6: Crochet the Head

Don’t cut the yarn—just continue on to crochet the head. Increase gradually to create a rounded shape.
Insert the safety eyes around Round 15 at the stitch markers. You’ll add facial details later to really bring Suki to life.
How to Assemble Suki the Snake
Step 7: Indent the Eyes

Use a tapestry needle and yarn to gently pull the area around each eye inward, giving Suki a sunken, expressive look. This is a great trick for adding dimension to the face without extra shaping.
Step 8: Make the Forked Tongue

Crochet a tiny red forked tongue separately. When you’re done, apply a small amount of glue to the fastened-off knot to secure it, especially since you’ll be trimming the yarn ends close to the knot.
Then stitch the tongue right below the lowest orange stripe on the face. It’s the perfect spot for a playful little flick of the tongue—fierce and adorable all at once!
Step 9: Add Eyebrows and Blush

With black yarn, embroider simple curved brows, and use white yarn to stitch a tiny highlight on each eye. For extra cuteness, brush a little blush on the cheeks. These finishing touches give Suki tons of personality!
That’s a Wrap!
From her striped, spiraled body to her cheeky smile, Suki is an absolute joy to crochet. Whether you’re learning short rows for the first time or just love playful, expressive patterns, she’s a fantastic addition to your amigurumi family.
And remember—Suki is just one of 32 animals in the ZooVenture Crochet Pattern series. Once you’ve made her, the rest of the zoo is waiting to be stitched!

How To Assemble
- Crochet and finish all parts of Suki, the crochet snake, according to the given pattern. Due to its tubular construction, stuff it with polyester fiber-fill as you go, preferably after crocheting about 3 inches. You may fill the tail end with stuffing beads to weigh it down, but without them, the snake can still stand up nicely.
- Install safety eyes at the designated positions before finishing the main snake.
- Give the face some character by indenting the eyes, adding eye whites with white yarn, and brows with black yarn.
- Crochet a tongue and sew it to the lower marking on the face.
- Lastly, add some blush to the cheeks to give Suki extra cuteness.
Notes
The total time required is an estimate based on the project's speed and the hours spent on it.
Suki can be crocheted and sold in small batches. However, you may not publish the patterns and images in any form without prior written permission from Craft Passion.
