Media Press Crochet Tutorial: Granny Squares
I fell in love to Granny Square!!! Where did the name come from? Must be related from a granny that designed and made it, I searched but can’t find, even wikipedia didn’t tell….
Granny Square is a kind of patch-working in crochet where we can literally put any color combinations we like to make it a square (or a triangle or any symmetrical shapes you can design) and patch them together to form a project. I love the flexibility it provides in design in terms of motifs, color combinations, shapes and sizes…. I crocheted a halterneck neck top for my daughter by using this square, yeah, another halterneck top for her after the knitted version. Will show the tutorial of the granny square top in my next post and how to join granny squares to form a piece.
There are many types of granny square, from plain basic square to sunburst flower square to emboss 3D flower square… you name it….the variations are unlimited.
Anyway, the one I am showing how to crochet is another variation, where I crochet double crochet [dc] in between to reduce the gap in between each dc cluster. This tutorial also shows how to change color in a neater way when going from round to round.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
Pick your favorite yarns’ colors and use the correct crochet hook size according to the yarn of your choice.
This granny square demonstrate here uses 3 color, green and white.
Starting chain: [Green] chain 4, sl st to the first chain to form a ring
Round 1: ch3, dc2, ch2,*dc3, ch2* repeat 3 times, to form 4 dc cluster on the 1st round.
sl st to the 3rd chain, continue sl st on the loops of the following 2dc.
To change color, insert hook to the 1st chain after the dc, draw white color yarn over, sl st and get ready for the round 2 crochet.
Round 2: [White] ch3, dc2 in next space, ch2 [form corner], dc3 in same space, ch1, dc1 on the center dc of round 1 cluster, ch1, *dc3 in next space, ch2 [form corner], dc3 in same space, ch1, dc1 on the center dc of round 1 next cluster, ch1,* repeat 3 times, sl st to the 3rd ch at the beginning on this round, continue sl st on the loops of the following 2dc and change yarn color.
Round 3: [Green] ch3, dc2 in next space, ch2 [form corner], dc3 in same space, ch1, dc1 on the center dc of round 2 next cluster, ch1, dc1 in next space, ch1, dc1 in next space, ch1, dc1 on the center dc of round 1 next cluster, ch1*dc3 in next space, ch2 [form corner], dc3 in same space, ch1, dc1 on the center dc of round 2 next cluster, ch1, dc1 in next space, ch1, dc1 in next space, ch1, dc1 on the center dc of round 1 next cluster, ch1* repeat 3 times, sl st to the 3rd ch at the beginning on this round, fasten off, or you can add as many round as you like by adding 3 sets of ch1, dc1 for each round between the corner cluster.
Weave in the ends in between stitches and hide them away.

There is a link in the post for the flower motif at the center which I found quite beautiful, but I don’t think there is a pattern for you.

I read about granny square was so hot in the 70′s and 80′s where you can see a lot of crochet project used this square to make up all sort of garments and decoration….
With years of development, granny squares nowadays are so much fun than those olden years….

I used DK, light worsted, 100% cotton or equivalent yarn to make the halter-neck top for my daughter.
Basically you can use any yarn that suits your project.

I love Granny Squares too. But I haven’t made one in a long time. I have 3 boys and a husband who for some reason like their blankies solid without wholes. I loved this alteration you have done with the typical Granny Square, adding the DC. I will try this pattern for myself. Thank you!
