Crocheting is fun. If you’re looking for something cute and adorable to crochet, here’s a free Amigurumi Sheep crochet pattern for you to try. Introducing, Sunnia, the crochet sheep.
Sunnia is a cousin to Sam, the stuffed sheep sewed from socks (click the link to get the free sewing pattern & tutorial). Just like Sam, Sunnia is just as cute and cuddly and brightens up the room no matter where he sits. They look very alike, except that Sam is made from socks and Sunnia from fuzzy yarn.
Sunnia dropped into the Craft Passion home because people saw Sam and wanted to know if he had yarn relatives who were just as cute. And that’s how Sunnia joins the sheep craft family!
Watch a video for a quick look at how you can create your very own crotchet sheep amigurumi. It shows amigurumi tips on:
- crocheting with fuzzy yarn
- how to crochet partial normal yarn and partial fuzzy yarn in amigurumi
- how to crochet in stripes with fuzzy yarn
- undoing stitches if you have made a mistake
- assembling the amigurumi sheep.
Sunnia, our amigurumi sheep is crocheted with both ultra-soft coral fleece fuzzy yarn and acrylic yarn. Here, I used a 3mm crochet hook to crochet this cutie and it turns up about 10 inches tall. He looks adorable in a soft coral fleece hoodie, which is detachable. When he takes his hoodie down, his happy face is smiling with that little plot of hair at the top. It just makes you want to hug him all day!
To add in the fun, you can make a few changes to Sunnia too, by adding a pair of horns to his head and ta-daaa, he’s now a ram! And yes, the crochet pattern for the horns is included on the crochet sheep amigurumi pattern.

I have some feedback from people who have tried this crochet that it’s difficult to handle the fuzzy yarn, such as for the Panda Amigurumi shared by Mei Li here in Craft Passion. After trying it out, I’ve discovered that it isn’t all that tricky to crochet fuzzy yarn, but the problem is that it isn’t easy to actually see where to insert our hooks because the fuzzy fibers are all over the place.
So here’s a solution: pair up the fuzzy yarn with a strand of normal yarn. The normal yarn will be a guide on where to insert the hook. Watch how I do it in the video on the tutorial page. This method also allows you to add or remove fuzzy yarn on the rounds in amigurumi without changing hook size.
Another problem in crocheting with fuzzy yarn is that it is difficult to undo stitches. I have a tip for this too, so you can pull out the wrong part of the yarn smoothly and correct the mistake.
Crochet With Fuzzy Yarn Is Not As Difficult As You Think!
The above 21-minute sheep amigurumi crochet pattern video took me weeks to get it perfect so everything is clearly arranged and easy for you to follow. After hours of video shoots and editing, it’s finally ready and hopefully, clear enough for you to follow so you know how to crochet your very own cuddly Sunnia, sheep amigurumi.

More Details on how to crochet the Sheep Amigurumi
- Crochet all parts by following the written patterns given.
- To assemble the head, first, insert the head into the hood and mark the position for the ears on the head through the 2 small ear openings on the hood. Take the head out from the hood.
Fold the opening edge of the ear in half. Sew to close the opening, and sew it onto the head. Repeat for the other ear.
Sew on the eyes and give it a slight tug to sink the eyes. There should be a slight indentation.
Sew a “V” with dark brown yarn or embroidery floss to create the nose and lips.
Insert the head back into the hood, and sew them both together at the bottom of the hood with a small circle. The circle should be the size of the opening of the body. - Mark a small circle at the bottom of the hood, the same size as the opening of the body. Follow the marking, sew the hood to the head before joining up to the body.
- Pin and sew body to head follow the marking, your needle just needs to sew the hood and don’t have to go deep into the head.
- This is how Sunnia looks like after attaching the head to the body.
- Sew on the arms.
- Sew on the tail the same way you sew on the ear.
Variation: Add Horns to make Ram
Roll up the horn and sew, while making stripe markings on the horn.
Add horns to the head of the sheep to turn him into a ram. The free crochet horn pattern is included in the sheep amigurumi pattern.
Variation: Sitting Sheep
To make sitting sheep: fold the sheep at the waistline into a sitting position and sew into place.
And now, Sunnia is ready to join the rest of the sheep craft family-like Baby Sheep Timmy and Sheep Earmuffs.
Baaaa….
Notes
A. HOW TO CROCHET WITH FUZZY YARN IN AMIGURUMI:
When working with fuzzy yarn, make things easier by pairing it up with a strand of acrylic yarn (in the same color). To make a sc stitch with fuzzy yarn: insert the hook into the back loop of a stitch, yo with both normal and fuzzy yarns, pull through, then yo with normal yarn (only!), pull through. [Note: the fuzziest side is actually the wrong-side of amigurumi. You will need to turn it wrong-side-out to make it go on the outside of your amigurumi craft]
B. HOW TO CROCHET STRIPES WITH FUZZY YARN IN AMIGURUMI:
To create stripe patterns in fuzzy yarns, you will need to alternate the yarn colors after a few rounds. With the fuzzier side (the wrong side) facing away from you, bring both worked fuzzy and normal yarns towards you, then bring the other 2 colors of fuzzy and normal yarns away from you, and continue with the crochet.
C. HOW TO ADD/REMOVE FUZZY YARN IN PART OF THE ROUND IN AMIGURUMI:
Sometimes you may need to add or remove fuzzy yarn to the round of your amigurumi piece. To add: slst in next stitch to end the normal yarn crochet. Turn the piece so the right side is facing away from you. Add another strand of fuzzy yarn to the normal yarn, sc into the next stitch.
To remove: bring the fuzzy yarn towards you, slst in next stitch with normal yarn only. Turn the piece so the fuzzier side (the wrong side) is facing you, then continue sc into the next stitch.

Hello, do you know how to make the horns bigger?
Craft Passion

Depending on how large you want it. If it's just a little bigger, you can use thicker yarn (or using double strands) and a bigger crochet hook. Otherwise, a crochet pattern adjustment is required.

Thank you for sharing your patterns! They are so cute and I would love to try to make some of them. I do have a question about the sheep...how much of each type of yarn did you use to make the sheep?
Craft Passion

I didn't count the amount of yarn but it is definitely less than a ball or skein for each yarn.

This pattern is so cute. I have a question about the hood, after adding the fuzzy yarn, do you only crochet in the back loops or do you crochet in the whole stitch?
Craft Passion

Always crochet in the back loop only with fuzzy yarn, as per written in the instruction ;)
