I was in Switzerland for my vacation a few weeks ago, and I had a unicorn with me. Yes, a beautiful Amigurumi Unicorn that has a pair of wings is Aile.
It was the new creative addition to my Animal & Wildlife Collection, an amigurumi winged unicorn. It is 15” tall when standing and crocheted from 8 ply acrylic yarn with a 2.5mm hook. Aile, the amigurumi unicorn with wings, was with me every step of the way while I traveled through the breathtaking scenery of the alps. Carrying a stuffed unicorn with me as I went through snow-capped mountains and beautiful grey-white scenery was just magical. I promised myself that I would share the unicorn crochet pattern the moment I returned from my trip, so here it is – the pattern page dedicated to Aile, the free winged unicorn amigurumi crochet pattern.

Aile is a special amigurumi unicorn, and it has wings on its back. Aile is French for “wing,” which is how it goes its name. The winged unicorn has no specific name, but sometimes, it’s called Alicorn. Other names for it are Pegasus or Pegacorn. It has magical powers as a unicorn, and its horn is often said to have raw, pure magic powers and often used for good. Light-colored winged unicorns are good mythical creatures, often using their magic to help people in need.
Speaking of crochet wings, we have recently published a new design on another type of wings: Angel Wings. The angel wings are one of the pieces in our Angel Costume Crochet Pattern. I am sure Aile will look great too with a pair of Angel Wings and style her with an angel costume.
Aile is peach in color, and like all other peach-colored winged unicorns, it is an adorably huggable crochet stuffed animal. Its legs can also fold under to be in a cute, upright sitting position, which will be perfect for lounging around in your craft room as you crochet all the other designs.
Aile, the amigurumi unicorn, flitted around the Alps with me throughout my trip, its eyes bright with excitement and horn sticking out the train window. It could feel the magic of mother nature in the snow, pine trees, and cones, and the more it looked at the scenery, the more it sparkled. Watching Aile in those weeks was fascinating, and until today, every time I look at this crochet amigurumi toy, I can see the snow-capped mountains and smell of the snow.
The amigurumi winged unicorn crochet pattern here can be adapted by turning it into a unicorn amigurumi, without wings. Or make a pegasus, which is all white and has no wings or horn. Otherwise, turn this unicorn crochet pattern into an amigurumi horse [Updated: here are the amigurumi patterns for Aile’s relative, Amigurumi Horse, Amigurumi Zebra, Amigurumi Donkey]. I am thinking of developing a separate pattern for all the different amigurumi animals. If you are a big fan of making soft toys, you can find all your free stuffed animal patterns here.
Unicorns are not the only ones with horns. Take a break from crocheting and try Nadir the sock narwhal who also has a horn. He’s made out of socks and has a horn just like Aile. I guess you could say he and Aile are very distant relatives!
Aile was my personal companion throughout our journey. The peach-pink body, white wings, khaki horn and feet, and rainbow-colored mane and tail were a joy to carry around. It put a smile on my face whenever I looked at it.
Here’s Aile, the winged unicorn amigurumi, at the base of Mont. Eiger, Switzerland, happily sitting on the hilltop overlooking a village.
Aile is enjoying the cold breezy day at Männlichen, sitting on the grass with crocus flowers bulbs, spouting after the snow has melted.
I hope you have as much fun crocheting Aile. Having a winged unicorn stuffed animal always puts me in a good mood.

Happy crocheting!

How To Make Amigurumi Unicorn
- Crochet all parts by following the crochet patterns given above and stuff the parts accordingly.
- Assemble the Unicorn Head by sewing the horn and ears to the head.
Draft an outline for the eyes by using an erasable marker. Adjust the position to suit your unicorn by referring to the given dimension as a guideline.
Embroider the eyes with black yarn and a darning needle in stem stitch. - Sew head to the body, followed by arms, feet, and wings.
This is how it looks like after the wings are attached to the body. - Wrap the rainbow color yarn on card stock (either 6″ or 12″), cut out 100 strips of 12″ rainbow yarns. These rainbow strips are for the mane and tail of the Amigurumi Unicorn.
- Mark the position of the mane. It is 4 stitches wide at the center of the head, starting from the back of the horn all the way down to the back of the head.
This picture shows how to fasten the yarn strips to make the mane. Note that only the stitches between the top and the bottom row are fastened.
This is how the mane looks like after 5 rows.
Continue to fasten until you have done more than half of the head.
The 3.5 rows at the front part are the fringe of the unicorn. - You may leave the mane un-combed or you may roll it up as shown in the picture. Make a few stitches to secure the mane in place.
Make a few stitches to secure the fringe in place.
Decorate the fringe with a small flower. The crochet pattern of the small flower can be found here. - Fasten the tail in the same manner as the mane. However, if you want a fuller tail like shown in the picture, fasten more strips between the crochet stitches.

Notes
Depending on the speed and hours you are spending on the project, the total time needed is only an approximation.
Stuff the parts firmly and densely to give a good shape to amigurumi doll.

Tried to print this off but it came out so light that you can not read it. It is not my printer. It shows up that light in the printer preview.

Thanks so much for your wonderful patterns! I made this a little bigger in Lavender with butter coloured hooves for my 7-year-old goddaughter and she loved it! To make it sit up I put a small beanbag in the bottom of the body; still huggably squishy but it can hold a seat. Looking forward to trying the crochet dragon next!

Translation (by Google): Hello, a question, but doesn't the body start with a magic ring? Is there a mistake or am I a beginner and I don't understand much? I'd like to start creating it for my little girl, I've made many other animals but this never. how should i start?

Hi Jessica, This body is in oblong shape so it doesn't begin with a magic ring, instead, it begins will an oval base.

Hello! I am getting ready to finish off this lovely (and very generous - thank you) pattern, and was wondering if the top of the body needs extra stuffing - either poly fill or something stronger - to hold up the head? I have had issues with crochet toys' heads being wobbly in the past! Thank you :)

Besides stuff more polyfill, you may also sew a broader contact area between the head and the body to solve this issue.

Hi, I really love your unicorn pattern ! I am going to crochet one for my niece and I wanted to ask you a question related to the yarn and hook. You mention in the pattern that you used a 2.5 hook and 8 ply yarn. I looked at the yarn weight standard and they say that for an 8 ply the recommended hook size is 4.5-5.5. Could you please provide me some more details on whether the hook size should be smaller for this crochet technique? Also could you please approximate how much yarn you used? Thank you very much ! I can't wait to start my project :)

For amigurumi, we generally use a smaller hook to crochet. The reason for using a smaller hook is to make crochet stitches tighter so that it is good for stuffing. You may use a 2.5mm to 3mm crochet hook of an 8 ply yarn for amigurumi. For the unicorn body, I used slightly more than a ball of 100-gram yarn, so, please buy 2 balls for the body, 1 ball of rainbow color yarn for the mane and tail, and 1 ball of white yarn for the wings.
