Whether it is for celebrations like the upcoming Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or someone’s birthday, the heart has been used as a gesture to show affection and appreciation for one another. Different colored hearts can convey different meanings. For instance, a white or red heart signifies pure and deep love, which is often used amongst couples to show their extreme affection for each other, while a blue heart expresses loyalty and trust between friends.

Origami was used by ancient Japanese shrines as a form of blessing and prayer. This makes the origami heart all the more a precious and meaningful gift for the recipient. You could even make more than one to shower your friends, relatives, family, and loved ones with everlasting love!

Craft Supplies You’ll Need

  • Paper:

In this tutorial, I used 6″ square metallic origami paper in red. However, feel free to use paper of any size, print, or color—it is your own take, after all.

  • Metal Ruler/Bone Folder:

These are optional, but they can help you create sharp and neat creases, which can make your process so much more smoother.

  • Markers/Colored Pens/Pencils:

If your origami heart is feeling a little plain, add a bit of your own touch with some markers and pens! Whether you’re making this for someone else or yourself, what makes crafting fun is the creativity it allows you to exhibit.

FAQs for Simple Origami Heart

1. What should I do if my origami heart doesn’t stay flat?

There are two ways to approach this. One is to mist your origami heart with water lightly and gently press it with heavy objects, like books. However, this method is tricky, as it may create wrinkles in your heart, and too much water may cause it to tear. Another method is to use adhesives.

Personally, glue sticks have provided our project with great results. The drawback of this method, however, is that if excess glue is used, it may create grey markings around the edges of the heart. However, if done correctly, both methods provide satisfactory results.

2. How do I eliminate the white spaces behind the heart?

The good news is that we’ve prepared a list of other fun designs that will help out. For instance, an option for a double-sided origami heart is available! That said, it is a more challenging pattern. But, if that isn’t your cup of tea, you could glue two hearts together to cover up the back.

Alternatively, you can use double-sided origami paper or color them with any medium of your choice. Whether it be tiny doodles, painting designs, or completely blocking out the space with a color, the decision is up to you.

3. Can I make the hearts in different sizes?

Certainly! We can make this origami heart with a piece of 3″ by 3″ memo pad or Post-it sticky note with barely any trouble. Feel free to experiment with paper types, textures, and sizes! Any will work as long as it begins as a square.

4. How can I customize my origami heart?

The options are limitless. As mentioned above, you can draw on it with colored pencils, paint, and markers. You can also use washi tape to glam it up, add glitter, or anything else — you name it. As long as you’re having fun, try anything and everything! It’s also a fantastic way to personalize and customize them.
